0:01
You say you are morally obligated to do remarkable things.
0:05
Mhm.
0:08
>> Why?
0:08
>> Well, I think partly
0:09
because life is so difficult
0:12
and challenging that unless you give it everything you have,
0:16
the chances are very high
0:18
that it will embitter you
0:20
and then you'll be a force for darkness
0:22
and not good.
0:25
You know, the the fact
0:26
that life is short
0:28
and can be brutal can terrify you into hiding
0:34
and avoiding,
0:36
but it it can also you can flip
0:38
that on its head
0:39
and understand that since you're all in anyways,
0:43
you might as well take take the risks that are adventurous.
0:47
And that's a very good thing to understand.
0:51
And what is also useful to understand in
0:54
that manner is that there isn't anything more adventurous than the truth.
1:00
This is something that took me a long time to figure out.
1:03
Well, you can craft your words to get what you want, you know,
1:07
and people do that all the time.
1:09
They craft their words
1:10
so they can avoid taking responsibility for things they should take responsibility for,
1:14
or they can craft their words to gain an advantage
1:16
that they really don't deserve.
1:19
That's what you do when you manipulate.
1:21
And the problem with that, you might say, well,
1:23
why not do that if I can get what I want?
1:25
And the answer to
1:26
that is you aren't necessarily the best judge of what you need.
1:32
And it's easy to be deliluded in what you want.
1:35
And that's the sort of delusions that people chase if they chase power.
1:42
If you decide instead
1:43
that you're going to just say what you believe to be true,
1:47
you have to let go of the consequences.
1:50
And you might think, well,
1:51
I don't want to let go of the consequences
1:53
because I want to control what's going on.
1:55
But what you miss
1:56
then is adventure because
1:58
if you don't control what's going on,
2:00
you don't know what the hell's going to happen.
2:04
And maybe that's exciting and actually there's no doubt about it.
2:07
And then you have the additional advantage
2:09
if you're attempting to say what you believe to be true
2:12
and attempting to act in the manner
2:14
that you think is most appropriate. that's genuinely you
2:18
and you have the force of reality behind you.
2:21
Obviously, that's what you have
2:23
if you're trying to say live in the truth is you have the force
2:26
of reality behind you.
2:27
That seems like a good deal.
2:28
Then you have the reality and the adventure.
2:31
So why is that a moral obligation?
2:34
Well, if you hide
2:36
and you don't let what's inside of you out
2:38
and you don't bring into the world what you could bring
2:40
and you become cynical
2:42
and bitter,
2:43
you will start doing very dark things.
2:46
So you'll start in in not only will you not add to the world
2:50
what you could add,
2:51
but you'll start being jealous of people who are competent
2:55
and doing well and work to destroy them.
2:59
So that's the pathway to hell.
3:07
There's no shortcut.
3:10
There's no hack.
3:12
There is no other way around it.
3:15
You must absolutely unapologetically be obsessed with the process, not the rewards,
3:24
not the recognition, the process.
3:28
Because we live in a world that worships the end result.
3:33
Social media shows you the wins, the degrees, the job offers, the celebrations.
3:39
But what it doesn't show you is the 4:00 a.m. grind.
3:43
The anxiety before an exam.
3:45
The frustration when nothing makes sense and you're questioning your entire ability.
3:52
Let me be crystal clear.
3:55
There is no easy route.
3:57
If there was, everybody would take it.
4:00
But that's not who you are.
4:03
You built different.
4:05
So from the moment your alarm clock goes off, not just Monday morning,
4:10
not just when you're in the mood, every single day,
4:14
your mindset has to be I woke up.
4:18
So come hella high water,
4:20
I am going to win this day. winning your thoughts, winning your schedule,
4:28
and bringing that winner's mentality with you into the classroom, into the library,
4:32
into every conversation, every challenge.
4:36
You were not born for mediocrity.
4:38
FAILURE IS NOT IN your DNA.
4:42
But listen, there will be bad days.
4:46
Let's not pretend it's going to be easy.
4:48
There will be days where your brain feels like it's running in circles.
4:52
There will be days when you stare at your notes and think,
4:56
"I don't get it."
4:59
But what you will never do is tap out.
5:03
Is wave the white flag and say, "Maybe this just isn't for me."
5:07
So while they scroll, you study.
5:09
While they party, you grind.
5:12
While they quit, you go harder.
5:15
This race isn't about how fast they're moving.
5:18
It's about how focused you stay.
5:21
And this race, this journey is won by those who can separate themselves from
5:26
the distractions,
5:27
the drama, the excuses.
5:29
So I need you to lock in today, right now, this moment.
5:36
LET THAT FIRE RISE.
5:37
LET THAT PURPOSE burn
5:38
and LET THE WORLD FEEL THE POWER OF SOMEONE WHO DECIDED
5:42
THAT AVERAGE is not an option.
5:54
>> >> What if after all the hard work, all the blood, all the sweat,
6:00
all the tears, you still fail?
6:05
Let me tell you something.
6:07
You did not fail.
6:09
You learned.
6:10
And that lesson is worth more than gold
6:12
because life will hit you
6:13
when you least expect it.
6:16
You'll get KNOCKED DOWN.
6:18
YOU'LL QUESTION EVERYTHING.
6:20
But you must look in the mirror and say, "Because of this setback,
6:24
I'm stronger.
6:26
Because of this pain, I'm wiser.
6:28
Because of this moment, I'm better.
6:31
Because you have something that many people will never tap into.
6:40
Potential.
6:42
Massive potential.
6:44
Unstoppable potential.
6:44
But listen, don't you get it?
6:48
Potential is just unrealized greatness.
6:52
It doesn't mean anything if you don't put it to work.
6:58
You're not the first person to feel like they don't measure up.
7:01
You're not the first person to wonder if you're smart enough.
7:04
You're not the first person to cry in frustration, to want to give up,
7:08
to feel overwhelmed.
7:10
But the people that push through, they're the ones who rise.
7:14
They're the ones who graduate AT THE TOP.
7:16
THEY'RE THE ONES WHO GO ON TO BUILD businesses and change lives.
7:21
If you settle for just passing, you're robbing yourself.
7:26
NO, BECAUSE THAT'S NOT YOU.
7:29
What you will do is walk right up to your professor, your TA,
7:33
your mentor, and say, "I want to win in this class.
7:37
I want to grow, but I need help.
7:39
I need clarity and I'm here for it.
7:42
I'm here for whatever you can teach me, but I need your help.
7:46
Because passion and persistence, that's a language that every great teacher understands.
7:51
They'll meet you halfway,
7:53
but only if you show you're serious about crossing that finish line.
7:58
That anxiety, it's not your master.
8:01
That confusion is temporary.
8:04
That pressure, IT'S NOT HERE TO CRUSH YOU.
8:06
IT'S HERE TO SHAPE YOU. is here to mold you.
8:10
You were born with everything you need to win already inside of you.
8:14
You already have what it takes not just to pass, but to excel.
8:20
You're not broken.
8:22
You're building.
8:26
You were born TO BE SPECTACULAR.
8:28
BORN FOR IMPACT.
8:29
BORN FOR LEGACY.
8:31
So leap OVER THE OBSTACLES.
8:33
CRAWL IF YOU MUST.
8:34
RUN IF YOU CAN.
8:35
But whatever you do, DO NOT STOP.
8:38
BECAUSE THAT VOLCANO of potential INSIDE OF YOU, IT'S NOT DEAD.
8:42
IT'S NOT GONE.
8:43
It's waiting for your permission to erupt.
8:55
So go be powerful, go be relentless, GO BE GREAT.
9:02
THIS IS YOUR MOMENT.
9:04
I just need you to own it.
9:06
Like life can be hard.
9:08
Life can be rough.
9:08
But there's something special
9:10
and there's something powerful about the human mind
9:12
and about the human spirit
9:14
and about the human will
9:15
when you tell yourself,
9:16
"I won't give up.
9:17
I won't surrender.
9:18
I won't quit.
9:19
I'm going to show up every single day
9:20
and do the best
9:21
that I can."
9:25
Once you enter into a situation with the right mindset,
9:30
once you enter into a situation
9:32
and understand that it's first about self-belief
9:35
and a commitment to your purpose,
9:38
if you're driven towards what you're supposed to do first
9:41
and foremost before you operate in
9:43
that environment,
9:45
you're already a success.
9:48
And a lot of y'all scared.
9:50
Just walk into it.
9:53
Stop running from it because your life ain't sweet.
9:55
WHY?
9:55
SINCE YOU'VE BEEN RUNNING, IT AIN'T LIKE YOUR LIFE SWEET FROM RUNNING.
9:58
Listen to me very closely.
10:00
Y'all running from obstacles
10:02
when in fact it's the obstacle that's going to take you to the next
10:05
level.
10:11
Give yourself the opportunity to continue on your path.
10:16
Don't see failure as a stopping point. see failure
10:18
as a part of your process.
10:22
You're still in motion.
10:26
The biggest concern I have for you >> Mhm. >> is
10:30
that you think you did something wrong
10:32
and now you're behind.
10:34
>> I That's That's how I feel.
10:37
>> I know.
10:38
Which is why you're trouble.
10:40
The answer is you're not going to find nothing
10:43
if you're still dwelling on what got you to the spot.
10:49
>> >> If you actually said, "Oh I'm 25.
10:51
I can do for five years.
10:52
I'll be a cook for 6 months.
10:54
I'll be an architect for 6 months.
10:55
I'll start a sneaker brand for six."
10:57
If you did that and realize at 30 after 5 years of that,
11:00
you're still young as >> Yeah.
11:02
>> Then you win.
11:04
If you're like, "Fuck my, you know, I grew up.
11:06
I was good at school.
11:07
I was doing this and the you lost."
11:12
>> Are you ready to take the next step?
11:15
Are you ready to start the new chapter?
11:18
Are you ready?
11:19
Are you ready?
11:22
You're not waiting for the perfect time.
11:24
You going to make it THE PERFECT TIME.
11:26
YOU DON'T NEED A PERFECT CLASS FOR YOU to do what you got to
11:28
do.
11:30
You don't need the perfect teacher for you to succeed.
11:33
YOU DON'T NEED THE PERFECT CLASSMATES for you to overcome.
11:36
YOU YOU DON'T NEED TO BE IN THE PERFECT SETTING.
11:39
NAH.
11:40
NAH.
11:40
Even when it's not perfect, you're going to make it.
11:43
Why?
11:43
cuz you've feuded on the inside.
11:47
You deserve to see what your life would look like if you gave 120%.
11:53
You you you've been living 70%, 80%, we've been talking about it.
11:57
And and you're looking at the results, the outcome, right?
12:00
You reap what you sow.
12:01
You're looking at the outcome of somebody giving 70%.
12:04
Like everything everything you have, everything you are, everything you doing,
12:08
like it's is 78.
12:11
And what I need you to do is I need you to look at
12:12
yourself in the mirror
12:13
and say,
12:13
"Come on, quit.
12:14
Stop playing.
12:16
I deserve to see what my life would look like if I gave 120%."
12:24
It's about the way in which you operate.
12:27
And when you start to try to define your purpose,
12:29
I'm not someone to say that I found it yet,
12:31
but what I'm understanding is it's a process of becoming.
12:35
You have to put yourself in situations where you fail over and over again.
12:39
They're processes that allow you to grow, develop, mature.
12:47
The next time you see failure, define failure as your teacher.
12:52
The next time you see adversity, define adversity as your advantage.
12:57
The next time you see an obstacle, define your obstacle as an opportunity.
13:01
The next time you see loss,
13:03
define your loss as a lesson. put those things together
13:06
and understand that you have the ingredients for your success.
13:13
I think often times we try to step into situations and we have doubt,
13:17
failure, and fear on our minds
13:19
and we wonder why the situation doesn't go the way in
13:22
which it was supposed to go,
13:24
right?
13:24
Like you step into a situation and you're hesitant.
13:26
You're 50/50 on why it is you're going to where you're supposed to go
13:30
and then you wonder why you don't get the result you're supposed to get.
13:33
when you stepped in with cloud.
13:36
Man, I feel like I've been pushed down in the dirt.
13:39
I feel like people have been stumping on me.
13:41
I feel like stuff has been raining on me.
13:43
But you didn't realize this, my young friends, you was just a seed.
13:47
So, you got to tell yourself, "No, no, no, no, no.
13:49
I haven't been pushed down in the dirt and I haven't been stumped on.
13:52
I've been planted.
13:53
And I've been placed in this pot for a reason.
13:55
And we are at this arena here to be able to have a conversation
13:58
to say,
13:59
what does it look like to go to that next level?
14:07
>> >> Maybe the beginning of your story was rough,
14:10
but I got good news for you.
14:12
THERE'S ANOTHER CHAPTER.
14:14
AND THE NEXT CHAPTER IS GOING TO BE YOUR BEST CHAPTER
14:18
BECAUSE the next chapter,
14:20
YOU'RE GETTING READY to write something new.
14:22
The next chapter, it will say happily ever after.
14:27
Your next chapter is going to be better than your last chapter
14:31
because it's not about how you start.
14:35
There is no destination.
14:36
When we talk about goals,
14:37
we're talking about goal setting
14:39
because you should be focused on the person you're becoming
14:41
and not the result.
14:52
The only block for you is you.
14:55
You've been looking for a word.
14:57
You've been looking for a person.
14:59
You've been looking for someone to call you.
15:01
You've been looking for someone to point you.
15:03
You've been looking for someone to actually ascend.
15:05
That is not the case.
15:09
It's on you and you alone.
15:11
And if we all operate with that type of purpose,
15:14
it doesn't matter what you do.
15:16
If we all operate with that purpose, when you step into a building,
15:19
I don't care what it is that you do.
15:21
And if you do it with the type of passion
15:23
and zeal and enthusiasm
15:24
that allows people to know
15:26
that you have a mission statement with how you move,
15:29
you leave your mark on the world.
15:38
Like I promise you,
15:39
every single person who wants to do something with their life
15:42
and has done something with their life has gone through the exact chapter
15:45
that you're going through.
15:46
And it's the lonely chapter.
15:51
There comes a time
15:52
when the hard work you have to do is learning
15:54
that you can't work any harder any longer
15:56
and that you have to change what got you here to what will get
15:59
you to where you want to go.
16:01
>> Why are you so antisocial?
16:03
Because I'm trying to get it.
16:05
Why are you out there practicing in the hot sun
16:07
when ain't nobody else out there?
16:09
Because I'm trying to get it.
16:10
>> I I don't want to do it alone, but I need to.
16:14
>> It's a gamble.
16:16
Yeah, I know that.
16:17
But look, if there was a time to roll the dice, this is it.
16:21
>> A lot of people problem is like they don't know how to be
16:24
by their self,
16:25
bro.
16:25
Like, you got to learn how to be by yourself.
16:27
You got to learn how to be alone, bro.
16:30
Nobody wants to disappear for 3 months, 4 months, 6 months,
16:33
and and and eliminate all distractions
16:36
and get into a place where you can focus on just you.
16:41
What if you could just shut out every distraction?
16:43
What if you could just shut up the world for just a season
16:46
and focus on you?
16:50
So if you wake up in the morning
16:52
and you don't want to do something,
16:54
you don't care enough about yourself.
16:56
And that's what you need to really research is why am I not doing
17:00
this for myself?
17:01
Because that is that is the number one purpose in life is to better
17:06
oneself.
17:08
So that's the only purpose I need.
17:11
I built this me brick by brick
17:14
and I'll be damned
17:15
if I LET YOU TEAR IT DOWN JUST CUZ YOU DON'T LIKE THE WAY
17:18
another talk.
17:20
Stop telling everybody what you're going to do.
17:22
Stop telling everybody what your next move is
17:25
and just disappear and do the work
17:30
that is required.
17:35
I was hopelessly alone and uh bullied when I was in school.
17:38
I was the most unpopular kid throughout all of school.
17:41
I was an only child, very socially awkward,
17:44
and you would not have picked me
17:47
as being anybody that would have become even slightly competent in life,
17:51
let alone being in relationships and being happy and so on and so forth.
17:55
You do not know the path
17:56
that your life is going to take you down over the longer term.
17:58
You do not know how you are going to grow up,
18:00
the way that you're going to look,
18:01
the way that you're going to become competent
18:03
or confident or any of these different things.
18:05
Yes, there are some challenges that you're going to face,
18:08
but what do you want to do?
18:09
Do you want to roll over
18:11
and just allow the world to continue to kick you in the teeth?
18:14
The pessimist is always going to be able to prove himself right?
18:17
Cuz like in the Matrix,
18:19
when Neo's about to go take the red pill
18:22
and he wants to get out of the car,
18:23
Neo, you've been down
18:24
that road and you know exactly where it leads
18:26
and I know that's not where you want to be. you could go back,
18:30
but then you'd have to remember exactly what the reason was
18:33
that you decided not to go out to begin with is
18:35
because you listen to this podcast
18:36
and you consume this content,
18:37
you're like, I can can do more than this.
18:39
And you start to see the person that you could be and you're like,
18:41
this does start to feel like hell.
18:43
So, the very fact that it's difficult is why it is worth doing.
18:46
And so, like, we can't resent the price tag of the shoes
18:50
that we want to buy.
18:52
We just have to make the decision of whether
18:53
or not we want to pay it.
18:55
Everything in my life breathes and eats this purpose that I have.
19:01
I got to make it personal.
19:02
It's it's it starts with me.
19:04
When it starts with me, it ends with me.
19:10
But there are many people out there who did make it.
19:14
And they're making it today.
19:17
And the reason that they're making it is
19:19
because they had just enough faith in who they are inside
19:24
and they did not allow anyone to come in between their faith
19:30
and their possibilities.
19:33
No man or woman can put you down unless you allow it.
19:41
So if you are alone right now,
19:45
if you're sitting in a quiet place right now, have that moment to yourself,
19:51
give your life some deep thought and process it and then attack.
20:00
And I'm not coming at y'all on any other level, but keeping it real.
20:03
The life that I live,
20:05
I deserve this life because I work my ass off to get it.
20:08
Y'all out here running around on the brink of destruction
20:12
and it's all self-inflicted trying to live up to the hype.
20:17
You still got work to do.
20:20
Stay on that basketball court.
20:22
Stay on that football field.
20:24
All the homies texting
20:25
and calling and trying to make you feel bad about being
20:28
so focused.
20:29
It's grind season, homie.
20:31
It's not about today.
20:33
It's about the future.
20:35
I know there's a whole bunch of people with
20:37
that right there that fires me up.
20:39
That brings joy to my life right there.
20:41
Like cuz I know there's
20:42
so many people that have the ability
20:46
and just refuse to get off
20:48
that couch.
20:50
Refuse to study a few more hours.
20:52
Refuse to go deeper to go further.
20:54
And that's where I gained the advantage.
20:58
What truly truly matters in life is your time is being captured
21:02
and your attention is being captured by a thought
21:04
that could have been gotten rid of had you have just done it.
21:06
Had you have just had the conversation, broken up with the relationship,
21:09
left the job, told the father, whatever it is that you needed to do.
21:13
All of that anxiety cost could have been gotten rid of had you just
21:18
gone and done it.
21:19
You can move through life at seven times the rate of other people by
21:25
simply changing when you say you're going to make a decision from end of
21:27
week to end of day.
21:29
So think about how that stacks up.
21:30
So it's like let's say
21:31
that there were four decisions
21:32
that you needed to make.
21:33
If the normal person takes a week to make the decision
21:36
and then their mind moves on to the next thing
21:38
that they have anxiety for
21:39
and start making that decision
21:40
and decide another week,
21:42
decide another week, decide another week.
21:43
It's a month to make those four decisions.
21:45
Whereas the the super the superman that takes one decision day one,
21:50
one decision day two, third decision day three, fourth decision day four,
21:54
they aren't even finished the week yet
21:55
and they're where the other person is at the end of the month.
21:58
And like that speed of decision-m like not paying the attention cost,
22:02
the opportunity cost of your time.
22:05
I think it's really profound in terms of how quickly people move through life
22:10
in terms of achieving the goals
22:11
that they set out.
22:12
If you go on an airplane,
22:14
every time you've ever got on an airplane
22:16
and they've said in case of emergency,
22:19
if the plane is about to go down,
22:22
they say put the mask on yourself first before you try
22:26
and help anyone else,
22:28
including your own kids.
22:30
That means that you can only take care of everybody else
22:34
if you make it more of a point to take care of yourself.
22:39
It is time to be more selfish.
22:42
Tell them, "Sorry, something came up.
22:45
I've made other plans.
22:47
I'm gonna go do something for me."
22:50
>> It doesn't start with them and they.
22:52
It starts with me.
22:54
It starts with me.
22:55
>> There's a a cool insight that the more you complain,
22:58
the less accurate your model of reality.
23:00
So complaining is you saying the world isn't delivering to me
23:04
that which I anticipated
23:06
or expected or desired from it.
23:09
Which is also you saying I don't understand how the world works until it
23:13
comes and meets me in reality.
23:15
There's three primary things
23:18
that everyone uh casts all their pain
23:20
and suffering to which is you have circumstances,
23:24
you have other people and you have self.
23:26
And that's it.
23:27
Those are the three those are the three big ones
23:29
that everyone puts all of their all of their blame on.
23:32
And so the first two obviously don't serve you.
23:34
The third sometimes serves you depending on what you do
23:38
as a result of it,
23:39
right?
23:39
And so um that actually those big three has just been a really easy
23:43
filter.
23:43
It's like, oh, am I blaming circumstances?
23:44
Am I blaming other people?
23:45
Am I blaming me?
23:46
And um obviously you want to skip to you cuz that's the only thing
23:49
you can do anything about.
23:52
Wouldn't do that.
23:54
There ain't no friendly faces out there.
23:57
Only a just desserts.
24:00
Who are you?
24:01
I guess the better question is what have I become?
24:10
The ultimate ideal is also the ultimate judge
24:13
because the ultimate ideal is is something against
24:17
which you fall far short
24:20
and that might be
24:21
so painful that you can barely stand it.
24:24
But then what you do is you two things I suppose is you lower
24:28
the ideal and you raise your estimation of your poss of your potential.
24:32
And what do I mean by lower the ideal?
24:35
Well, if you're comparing yourself to someone
24:38
or even to a future self
24:40
and the gap is
24:42
so painful that it paralyzes you,
24:44
then you've created a dragon that you don't have the tools to master.
24:49
And so what you have to do is you have to scale the dragon
24:52
down to size.
24:53
And you want to scale the dragon down to size until it's a size
24:57
that you are willing to move toward,
25:02
however small that is.
25:04
Now, you know, if you're here
25:06
and your ideal is here
25:07
and that gap is unbearable,
25:09
then you reduce the gap
25:11
because you're not going to move from where you are to perfect in one
25:14
fell swoop.
25:17
There's going to be incremental steps.
25:19
So you have to fill in
25:20
that that hierarchy of progression with with a high enough resolution representation
25:28
so that you can start to move forward
25:30
and and then you should be buttressed.
25:32
There's another gospel comment that's very interesting.
25:34
It has to do it's called the Matthew principle
25:36
and the Matthew principle is to those who have everything more will be given
25:40
and from those who have nothing everything will be taken.
25:44
Now it's brutal because it implies that reality works like this.
25:48
When you're moving up, you go like this, right?
25:50
And that's pretty nice.
25:51
That's a lot better than this.
25:54
But when you're going down, you go like that, right?
25:56
It's like downhill downhill cliff.
25:59
Okay?
26:00
So, you want to avoid the downhill path.
26:03
Well, if the uphill path is like this, which is like exponential, let's say,
26:07
or geometric, then what
26:09
that means is that it doesn't matter how big the first steps you take
26:14
uphill are. even if they're trivial,
26:17
even if they're shameful in their in their size
26:21
because you're so useless
26:23
that if you're if you're disciplined in
26:26
that,
26:27
you'll speed up extraordinarily rapidly.
26:30
And so that's the good news, you might say,
26:32
is that you can take very small steps,
26:35
even ones that might be shameful in their size,
26:38
and you have to admit that to yourself.
26:39
But once you get the ball rolling, it doesn't roll in a linear fashion.
26:46
It rolls in a geometric fashion.
26:47
And this is a really good thing to know
26:49
because it can take the sting out of the realization of your own stupidity.
26:53
It's like, yeah, you know, everybody has their weak sides, let's say,
26:59
things they're embarrassed about.
27:01
When I first started going to the gym, I was like,
27:04
how old was I?
27:05
1985, 23.
27:07
And I think I weighed 135 lbs
27:09
and I was f 6'1 very very thin.
27:13
I smoked like mad and I drank too much.
27:15
Like I wasn't in good shape.
27:17
The first the first attempts forward I took in the gym.
27:22
I went to this swim exercise class.
27:24
It was me and this like really fat guy, young guy,
27:29
probably not in any worse shape than me,
27:30
and like seven old women over 70, and they could outswim me.
27:36
Like, it was pretty damn humiliating.
27:38
And so I did a semester of
27:39
that and got myself in somewhat better shape.
27:41
And then I started to go to the gym to work out,
27:45
to lift weights.
27:46
And that was also rough because, you know,
27:48
I'd be underneath a bloody bench press trying to lift 75 lbs off the
27:54
off the rests.
27:55
And, you know, some muscle-headed bastard would come over
27:58
and tell me how to do it.
27:59
And it's like, yeah, thank you.
28:01
But, you know, it's embarrassing.
28:03
And lots of times people won't do things like go to the gym
28:06
because they're so embarrassed about how they look
28:07
or what sort of shape they're in.
28:09
And it's a pain to start at the bottom.
28:11
But you start at the bottom where you're weak.
28:15
And if you want to rectify what's weak,
28:18
you have to accept the fact
28:19
that you're at the bottom
28:20
and that the first steps are going to be painful.
28:22
You know, I it took me about 3 years.
28:25
But I stopped smoking
28:28
and then I stopped drinking
28:29
and I gained 40 lbs of muscle in like 3
28:33
and 1/2 years,
28:33
something like that.
28:34
I got a lot more physically confident
28:37
and a lot more coordinated cuz working out with dumbbells makes you coordinated,
28:43
right?
28:43
because it it exercises all the small ligaments
28:45
and the tendons and
28:46
so my lower body in particular got a lot more coordinated
28:49
then I could dance
28:50
so that was better
28:50
when I was going out dancing cuz I did a lot of
28:52
that in graduate school
28:53
and but the point of all this is
28:56
if you're going to rectify your weaknesses you have to admit your insufficiency to
29:02
your own shame now
29:04
if the gap between you
29:05
and your ideal is
29:06
so great that it paralyzes you shrink
29:08
that right >> one of the things I've been talking about in the live
29:12
shows is your comparison group is incorrect.
29:16
The fact that you know we have the opportunity to sit down
29:19
and listen to anybody on the planet,
29:21
right?
29:22
The best minds, the best athletes, the best thinkers,
29:26
the most articulate that are alive right now
29:30
or listen to the people
29:31
that have died that were around
29:32
when video cameras existed
29:34
and you can compare yourself to
29:35
that group.
29:36
Yeah.
29:37
But that's not your comparison group.
29:39
If you have the impetus to sit down
29:41
and listen to me
29:42
and you waffle on for 3 hours about these deep topics,
29:48
these interesting ideas, you are so already selected out of the normal group.
29:55
You're already asking yourself questions that almost nobody almost nobody else is, right?
30:00
But because your comparison group are people that are unbelievably high performing,
30:04
is that really who you're going to compare yourself to?
30:07
And it's unfair.
30:08
And the problem that I see is people who have big dreams for themselves
30:12
and want to do great things,
30:14
they like to set their sights high
30:17
and yet they feel despondent in the comparison.
30:21
So I think >> well there's a pride in that too.
30:24
Like >> I can be I want to be >> well
30:26
or that's who I should be comparing myself to.
30:29
Right?
30:30
That's the pride.
30:30
And the pride is something like I should be
30:33
that or even I could be
30:34
that.
30:35
It's like well maybe you could
30:36
but you're certainly not going to do it
30:38
as you already pointed out without the apprenticeship right
30:41
so you could say
30:42
that the dispondency is actually is is in proportion to the to the false
30:47
pride now I wrote a chapter in I think my first book
30:51
which was compare yourself to who you are today not to who someone else
30:55
is sorry I I mangled
30:57
that to some degree
30:58
but you get the point the proper comparison group for you is you yesterday
31:04
because you can make first of all,
31:06
you're their only control group that's appropriate to you
31:11
because you have a certain set of talents
31:14
and possibilities and limitations
31:16
and tragedies that are truly unique to you.
31:21
And so you might be comparing yourself to someone else on some dimension,
31:25
but it's not a reasonable comparison
31:26
because you don't know what talents they were blessed with. you also don't know
31:30
what opportunities they had
31:32
that you didn't etc.
31:33
It's just not a reasonable comparison.
31:36
It's a lot better to think about who you were
31:38
and then to think well could you be some what better in some dimension
31:44
and the the the positive thing about
31:45
that is the answer is almost always yes.
31:48
Now you can orient
31:49
that transformation towards some stellar target
31:52
and that's a reasonable thing to do
31:54
but that doesn't exactly mean
31:58
that you should compare yourself to
32:00
that target.
32:01
Aiming at something and comparing yourself to it are not exactly the same thing.
32:07
Plus your bloody comparison is also a delusion.
32:09
You know, that's another thing
32:10
that you have to understand is
32:12
that you look at the person you're jealous of
32:15
and really what you're doing is you're you're looking through a very narrow aperture
32:20
at a very thin slice of their life.
32:23
You're looking at the thin slice of their life that's turning out the best,
32:27
but you're also looking at a thin slice of their life that's marketed to
32:32
be the best.
32:33
Right?
32:34
And you have no idea what the horror of
32:36
that person's life might be in its totality.
32:39
And you have no idea
32:41
if like if the deal was say you wanted to be Russell Brand,
32:49
there's a good example.
32:50
You wanted to be Russell Brand.
32:51
You wanted to be as charismatic and as famous as he is.
32:54
Well, your real wish is that you get to have everything Russell Brand has,
32:59
but none of his problems.
33:01
Well, come on.
33:02
I mean, that's just it's just it's no wonder
33:05
that a vision like
33:06
that would make you despondent
33:08
because it's it's naive.
33:09
It's resentful.
33:11
It's jealous.
33:12
It's bitter.
33:13
And it's unreasonable.
33:15
You have to take the good with the bad.
33:17
You have to take the bad with the good.
33:19
And people ve rarely think about that when they're thinking about, you know,
33:23
the famous people they think they'd like to be.
33:29
If you could have what you wanted in this moment
33:32
and I could deliver it,
33:34
what would it be?
33:37
How much of the mess
33:38
that you see around you would vanish
33:41
if the mess that you could put straight was put straight?
33:48
The question always is why do something?
33:50
Cuz doing nothing is easy.
33:52
You just sit there and you don't do anything.
33:53
That's real easy.
33:54
The question is why would you ever do anything?
33:57
And the answer to
33:57
that has to be
33:58
because you've determined by some means
34:00
that it's worthwhile.
34:02
In many in many ways,
34:04
that's what you should be doing at university is that's exactly what you should
34:07
be doing is trying to figure out who it is
34:09
that you're trying to be,
34:11
right?
34:12
And you you aim at that.
34:14
And then you use everything you learn
34:15
as a means of building
34:16
that person that you want to be.
34:18
And and I really mean want to be.
34:20
I don't mean should be.
34:21
Even those things those things are going to overlap.
34:24
You know perfectly well
34:26
that if you put your mind to it
34:27
and you make the proper sacrifices,
34:28
there are things you can set straight.
34:32
>> What advice do you have for a young man in his 20s?
34:36
>> Make a plan.
34:38
Look at what you're interested in.
34:40
Get disciplined about something.
34:43
Allow for the possibility
34:44
that you have something important to contribute to the world
34:48
and that the world would be a lesser place without
34:50
that contribution.
34:52
Don't be afraid of taking on responsibility.
34:55
It's where you find what sustains you in your life.
34:58
You can take on too much responsibility.
35:00
You you have to be cautious in that regard,
35:02
but that's a less common problem than not taking on enough.
35:08
A lot of the things
35:09
that people regard as traps are actually the means to their life.
35:16
And then the next question might be, well,
35:18
where should you look for worthwhile things?
35:20
And one would be well you could consult your own temperament.
35:22
And the other would be well you kind of look at how look at
35:26
what it is that people acrue that's valuable across the lifespan.
35:30
But the way other way you do
35:32
that is by having a little conversation with yourself about
35:35
as if you don't really know who you are
35:37
because you know what you're like.
35:38
You won't do what you're told.
35:39
You won't do what you tell yourself to do.
35:42
You must have noticed that.
35:44
It's like you're a bad employee and a worse boss.
35:47
And and both of those work, you know, for you.
35:50
You don't know what you want to do.
35:51
And then when you tell yourself what to do, you don't do it anyways.
35:53
You should fire yourself and find someone else to be.
35:58
You have to understand that you're not your own servant, so to speak.
36:01
You're someone that you have to negotiate with.
36:03
And that's and you're someone
36:05
that you want to present the opportunity of having a good life to.
36:09
And that's hard for people because they don't like themselves very much.
36:14
So, you know, they're always like cracking the whip
36:16
and then procrastinating and cracking the whip
36:18
and then procrastinating.
36:19
It's like, God, so boring and such a pathetic way of spending your time.
36:24
And you know what that's like cuz you probably waste like 6 hours a
36:28
day.
36:28
You have to believe
36:29
that your action has some redemptive possibility cuz why would you do it otherwise?
36:35
And you might say, well, I kind of believe that's like, well,
36:38
that's not good enough.
36:39
You know, you kind of got to throw yourself all into it.
36:42
And what's the cost anyways?
36:45
It's not like you're going to get out of this alive.
36:48
So, you're pretty much all in whether you want to be or not.
36:51
And maybe if you were voluntarily allin,
36:54
things would be a lot better than they are.
37:01
If the world isn't everything that you want it to be,
37:05
maybe you're not acting the way you should.
37:11
One of the things people do to buttress themselves against failure is to never
37:18
let themselves really gain clarity about what they need
37:21
and want.
37:23
Let's say you try something
37:24
but you only do it half-heartedly
37:27
and then you fail
37:28
and you think,
37:28
well, I didn't really fail because, you know,
37:32
I held a bunch back in reserve
37:34
and so I didn't get what I wanted,
37:36
but maybe had I been allin, I would have.
37:39
And so you don't have to upgrade yourself too much for the failure.
37:42
Now, it's a catastrophic way to live to sit on the fence
37:46
and to not commit
37:48
because instead of risking the possibility of failure,
37:52
you engage in what's essentially the absolute certainty of failure.
37:56
Because if you want something worthwhile and difficult,
38:00
which you probably do if you want to have an adventure and go somewhere,
38:04
then what's the chance you're going to get it if you're halfway in?
38:10
You can't be halfway in,
38:11
but that sort of protects you against failure because you can tell yourself, "Well,
38:16
if I tried, I could have done it."
38:18
It's like, you know, you tell yourself that 200 times and your life's over.
38:25
Okay.
38:26
So once you get your goal structure set up, you think, okay,
38:28
if I could have this life,
38:30
looks like that might be worth living despite the fact
38:32
that it's going to be,
38:33
you know, anxietyprovoking and threatening
38:35
and there's going to be some suffering
38:36
and loss involved and all of
38:38
that.
38:38
Obviously, the goal is to to have a vision for your life such
38:43
that all things considered
38:45
that justifies your effort.
38:47
Okay.
38:48
So then what do you do?
38:50
Well, then then you turn down to the micro routines.
38:52
It's like, okay, well this is what I'm aiming for.
38:54
How does that instantiate itself day to day, week to week, month to month?
38:59
And that's where something like a schedule can be unbelievably useful.
39:02
Google calendar, it's like make a damn schedule and stick to it.
39:07
Okay, so what's the rule with a schedule?
39:10
It's not a bloody prison.
39:12
That's the first thing that people do wrong.
39:13
They say, well, I don't like to have follow a schedule.
39:16
It's like, well, what kind of schedule are you setting up?
39:18
Well, I I have to do this, then I have to do this,
39:21
then I have to do this, you know,
39:22
and then I just go play video games
39:23
because who wants to do all these things
39:25
that I have to do?
39:27
Set the damn schedule up so that you have the day you want.
39:30
If I was going to set it up
39:31
so it was the best possible day I could have,
39:34
what would it look like?
39:40
Mediocrity is behind you.
39:42
Success is in front of you.
39:44
>> We choose to go to the moon.
39:46
In the lonely chapter, you decide which way you want.
39:49
>> Ignition.
39:51
All engines are running.
39:53
>> We live in a world that demands more thought, more deep work.
39:58
The lonely chapter can be defined often times
40:02
as a season where you where you go to war with yourself.
40:06
There's a tranquility face.
40:08
The eagle has landed.
40:10
I'm descending the ladder.
40:13
I see the earth. the entire planet Earth.
40:18
>> You decide which way you will go
40:21
and we are immersed in whirlpools of busyiness,
40:26
noise and pleasure.
40:30
>> And the question is, >> can a man cut off temporary pleasures for longterm purposes?
40:41
The pain that you feel right now, this is the sign of success.
40:48
It is the sign of a man or a woman, a boy,
40:53
a girl who is willing to make the necessary sacrifices to achieve their target.
41:03
In order to get through the lonely chapter, he must embrace the lonely chapter.
41:12
There comes a time in every man's life,
41:15
a moment of clarity where one realizes there is more.
41:24
And in order for us to manifest more, we must become more.
41:30
And this requires us to withdraw ourselves to certain moments
41:36
and seasons and chapters at a time to find ourselves
41:40
or to rediscover ourselves
41:42
or to reinvent ourselves.
41:45
When was the last time you sat alone with your thoughts in silence?
41:52
You went for a walk, a bus ride, a train ride, a trip away,
41:59
a climb in the mountains, a hike down a trail,
42:04
to rediscover yourself to find who is the real you.
42:11
There are seasons in our lives that summon us to go deeper.
42:16
The question is, can you detach yourself from every disempowering limiting belief?
42:26
From every lid, from every label, from every limitation,
42:32
from everything you've made a crutch.
42:35
Can you resist what has been irresistible,
42:39
the false dopamine that you have so heavily relied on?
42:45
Can you delete the app?
42:48
Can you cancel the membership?
42:51
Can you end the subscription?
42:54
Can you step out of the toxic relationship?
42:58
We want proximity.
43:00
We want attention.
43:02
We want availability.
43:04
We want the presence of people who are draining us.
43:10
Ask yourself this question.
43:12
>> >> Are the people in your lives fountains or drains?
43:20
Do they give to you or do they take from you?
43:25
At this juncture, nothing else matters.
43:29
I got to disappear.
43:31
I got work to do.
43:33
There is a chapter
43:35
that is on the horizon where you withdraw yourself from every distraction,
43:42
all artificial significance and noise and you find yourself.
43:49
This is the place where every aspiration has a voice
43:55
and every dream grows wings.
43:59
Our dreams do not grow wings in the stillness of the night.
44:04
Somewhere inside of you, there is a spark,
44:09
an ember of possibilities
44:12
that you could become the man
44:15
or woman of your dreams,
44:18
the person you desire to be, the person that you desire to see.
44:25
Solitude is the corridor and the gateway to the future.
44:31
It is the trail and path most avoid.
44:38
When I get alone with myself, I get alone with my thoughts.
44:41
I realize I've made solitude a monster masquerading in my life
44:50
as a constant reminder
44:52
that I am not enough.
44:53
When the truth is solitude is a gift.
45:01
Solitude is a bridge, a gateway,
45:03
a path out of the simulation of artificial significance.
45:09
It's amazing to me how we build these lives of simulations,
45:13
these imitative representations of reality.
45:17
We construct these lives of artificial significance, busyiness, distraction, noise, emails, text messages, DMs,
45:25
and a cloud of people that call themselves our friends,
45:31
but are only with us when we are winning.
45:34
And they don't even know who we really are.
45:37
And the moment that we go through a losing season, they're gone.
45:42
They will abandon us.
45:44
When I can get alone with myself, I can step into identity.
45:49
Most people don't have what it is
45:51
that they desire because they really don't know what they want.
45:55
They don't know what they need and they don't know who they are.
46:00
When I can get alone with myself and my thoughts,
46:03
I can plan tomorrow today.
46:06
I can journal.
46:07
I can walk.
46:08
I can work out.
46:09
I can get in touch with my strengths and my weaknesses.
46:12
I can identify where I'm winning, where I'm losing, where I need to improve,
46:17
how I can step up.
46:20
I can schedule my priorities.
46:22
I can manage my energy.
46:24
I can scrupulously investigate
46:26
and evaluate where is my life
46:29
and where will it be in the next 5 years.
46:32
When people see me, what do I want them to think?
46:35
How will I be remembered?
46:37
What will I accomplish?
46:39
What will I become?
46:41
How can I get to this place that I've never been before?
46:46
It is possible to do this
46:49
when the chapter of being alone is no longer seen
46:54
as lonely,
46:55
but we see it as beauty, brilliance, wisdom.
47:02
You know, sometimes being alone is about protecting your peace.
47:06
It's about understanding that peace is like a crown jewel.
47:10
It's finding that quiet space to find myself
47:14
and begin to deconstruct
47:16
and begin to unlearn some things
47:18
and relearn some things.
47:21
You got to get serious about your peace and your future.
47:25
I've got to find what I've been called to do.
47:27
I've got to discover my purpose.
47:29
Make that difference. make the connections, create something, build something,
47:33
and then go back and help the people that were lost with me.
47:39
And so that alone time is
47:40
that time to reflect
47:42
and recharge and to imagine bold,
47:46
courageous, more intentional, more dialed in.
47:50
Some of the strongest souls, innovators, pioneers, captains of industry, CEOs, entrepreneurs, game changers,
48:03
city shifters, world changers have emerged out of suffering and solitude.
48:13
As you step into this chapter alone, my question to you is,
48:18
who will you be when you come out?
48:21
And what will you give back to the world?
48:24
Be terrified of dying until you have won some small victory for humanity.
