When you think of SportsCenter, you know, what do you think of?
0:02
What typifies it to you?
0:04
>> The The typical thing would be just it's a fantastic combination of being
0:08
entertained and being informed.
0:11
>> We want to welcome Linda to SportsCenter here.
0:13
She comes to us by way of Seattle and New York before that.
0:16
Nice of Larry Loretta, too, to light up a cigar on your behalf.
0:19
>> Well, Chris, you know, I don't smoke, but thanks anyway.
0:22
I just didn't want to make a mistake
0:23
and I just wanted to show the viewers not only how much I knew
0:26
sports,
0:27
but you know what?
0:27
Even more important, how much I loved sports.
0:32
>> Do you know who I am?
0:34
>> Time, Linda Cohn.
0:34
We're going to have fun, too.
0:36
>> If you don't know who that woman is right there.
0:38
>> Platinum plaques on my wall.
0:40
>> Well, then you're not up on your sports.
0:41
>> Well, come on.
0:42
LET'S GO AHEAD.
0:44
>> WHERE ARE YOU GOING?
0:45
>> That's why we loved it so much.
0:47
They turned to us for the information.
0:50
>> No one's done more SportsCenters than this young lady right here.
0:53
Linda, your 5,000th SportsCenter.
0:55
>> Oh, boy, Randy.
0:56
I'm already laughing.
0:57
People talk about, "Hey, you reached 5,000 SportsCenters, all-time leader."
1:01
The biggest takeaway for me is
1:03
that I have inspired
1:05
and helped open doors for young women
1:07
that are in the business now,
1:08
my wonderful colleagues, of course.
1:10
You know, we're not athletes.
1:12
It is the equivalent, I believe,
1:14
of being on a biggest of stages
1:18
and having that adrenaline rush
1:21
and walking off that set saying you did the best you could
1:25
and you did your job.
1:29
>> Joined now in studio by Linda Cohn herself.
1:32
Over 5,600 SportsCenters anchored.
1:34
Amazing.
1:35
>> Three decades at this desk.
1:37
And a spatula tackled, as we just saw there, too.
1:39
>> Love the flying spatula.
1:40
>> Love it.
1:41
Love it.
1:41
It is incredible.
1:42
So many moments across your storied career.
1:45
But, Linda, it's so interesting
1:46
because there's there's so much conversation about what it takes to reach the pinnacle
1:51
of your career and to reach the top.
1:53
But, what I'm interested is is what's the secret to staying at the top
1:57
of your game as you've done for
1:58
so long?
1:59
>> Uh Maddi, first of all, great to be with you.
2:01
It's just so proud of you and your success.
2:03
>> Thank you.
2:04
>> Um it's probably the key,
2:06
and this is what I tell a lot of people,
2:08
is the fact that even though I was on SportsCenter for 34 years,
2:13
I make believe somebody is watching me for the very first time,
2:17
and I have to prove to them
2:19
that I belong and
2:21
that I earned a seat in this chair.
2:22
>> That's so incredible.
2:23
It's like in the uh the last dance
2:25
when Jordan said there's always someone in the gym who's never seen you play.
2:29
>> Exactly.
2:29
>> And surprisingly, after over 5,600 SportsCenters, you never know.
2:33
There's always Maybe at this point I don't know.
2:35
>> You don't know.
2:36
>> Uh yeah, you know, it's it's true, but also I'm like I'm a fan,
2:39
you know, I'm a a fan of sports.
2:40
It's stayed with me.
2:41
A lot of people in our business, it's okay.
2:44
They become jaded.
2:45
All right?
2:45
It's just a matter It's true.
2:47
>> Right.
2:47
>> But not me.
2:48
Um it's part of my DNA.
2:49
It's why I got into this in the first place cuz I I love
2:54
watching old teams play.
2:56
I respect the athlete, and I respect what they do, and I'm a fan,
3:00
just like our viewers, and that that I feel that was the connection,
3:04
and that was another reason for the longevity.
3:06
>> Yeah.
3:06
I Not only a sports fan, but I'm such a fan of yours.
3:09
And one thing that I thought was very empowering
3:13
or very powerful is in your farewell,
3:14
you said, "What I'm most proud of is
3:17
that my career lasted long enough for me to see little girls grow up
3:20
watching SportsCenter,
3:21
enter the business, and succeed in it."
3:23
And as one of those little girls who grew up watching you on SportsCenter,
3:27
and has now come to interview you on multiple occasions,
3:31
and and admire you in so many different ways,
3:34
I I'm curious why
3:35
that is such a tentpole for you um in this industry.
3:40
>> Well, you know, Maddi, that always has meant so much to me.
3:43
I mean, women have to stick together.
3:46
Um it's very important to inspire and empower other women.
3:50
And while I was enjoying every single minute of being in the moment
3:55
and doing what I do,
3:56
loving sports and sharing that passion through the screen,
4:00
I did realize that there are young people like yourself, you know,
4:03
before you hopped on the bus to your kindergarten class checking me out,
4:07
watching the re-airs back in the day and saying to themselves,
4:11
"You know what?
4:13
Maybe I could do this.
4:15
Maybe it's not just about me watching this with my dad or my mom.
4:19
Maybe I can actually do this for a living cuz I see this woman
4:22
up there and her name's Linda.
4:26
And I think it's okay and I have hope now.
4:28
And yeah, that means so much to me.
4:30
Professionally, that's a strong legacy.
4:32
And the other thing is for all the young men
4:34
that grew up watching me
4:35
when they were little boys.
4:37
For them and and I love that.
4:38
They would they would always just say, "Maddy, don't take this the wrong way.
4:41
I never took sports from a woman before you."
4:43
And I go, "How can I take that the wrong way?
4:45
That's the greatest compliment I could get."
4:47
>> Right.
4:47
>> But it was it made them believers
4:50
that a woman can deliver sports
4:51
and know what she's talking about.
4:53
And that's why I loved to always doing highlights of games
4:56
because it really showed off not only my knowledge
4:59
but that I knew the game
5:00
and I knew what was going on
5:02
and I wasn't just reading it.
5:03
I was feeling it just like the fan on the couch watching SportsCenter.
5:08
>> And so great at it.
5:09
I mean, breaking boundaries and barriers in so many ways from being, you know,
5:12
a woman making the boys high school hockey team into one of the first
5:16
national sportscasters that is female.
5:19
You have deservedly so gotten
5:21
so much adoration and
5:23
and respect this week including from Lil Wayne chiming in.
5:27
I love that friendship.
5:29
Linda Cohn and Weezy besties, who knew?
5:32
I'm curious if there's a message
5:34
that you've received or somebody who's reached out
5:36
that has been surprising
5:38
or impactful to you.
5:39
>> I just want to thank everyone who has reached out.
5:41
It just means so much.
5:42
I'm going to get back to each and every one of you, I swear.
5:45
This is where social media is a good thing
5:46
because a lot of these people I never would be able to connect.
5:50
Kevin from the office is a big fan, Brian Baumgartner.
5:53
I love him so much.
5:53
He's the best.
5:54
He reached out.
5:55
Charles Barkley called me up on the phone
5:57
and and said all these amazing things about the women today,
6:01
you know, have a lot to be thankful for because you came before them.
6:05
You know, stuff like that.
6:06
But you know what I'm most proud of is
6:08
that I was able to have this career
6:10
but also be a mom
6:11
and have two amazing children,
6:12
Sammy and Dan.
6:14
And that's what I'm really most proud of
6:16
that I could pull off the balancing act
6:18
and still give this my all
6:20
but most important be a great mom.
6:22
>> You've got so many layers to the legacy you're leaving on all of us.
6:26
And and one of the the important things about the legacy
6:29
that you leave is how great you are at reading highlights.
6:32
And so before we let you go, Linda,
6:34
we want to run it back and maybe have you read one more.
6:37
And as a New Yorker >> Yes.
6:39
>> What better highlight >> We have a Knicks highlight for Linda.
6:42
>> Oh, yes.
6:43
Thank you, Phil Young PA.
6:45
>> Bree Bree makes this look so easy.
6:48
>> >> Yeah, you know what?
6:48
I was in Billings, Montana at the time.
6:50
I didn't miss a minute of this amazing thing.
6:52
For me, a Knicks fan since 1973.
6:55
Remember Remember this?
6:57
OG Anunoby saving the day.
7:00
Oh, the tip.
7:01
My God, for the love of elevation.
7:03
Anunoby goes inside for the tip and then the lead.
7:05
They battle back these beloved Knicks down 29.
7:08
They win it.
7:09
Stun Wemby in the crowd.
7:11
107-106.
7:12
They got a 3-1 lead as they head to San Antonio.
7:16
Oh, the Garden was great.
7:17
Taylor Swift, shout out to you.
7:19
You're the good luck charm.
7:20
Game five, Knicks looking to close out the series early for Jalen the Messiah
7:24
against Wemby.
7:25
Give it up.
7:26
And then Vassell finds Wembanyama, throws it down. 19 points, 14 boards for Wemby.
7:31
Spurs up nine.
7:33
Jalen Brunson, number 11, right past Wemby.
7:36
The captain.
7:37
The finger roll.
7:38
Knicks trail by four.
7:39
Here Here come, down two under five minutes to go.
7:42
Brunson again imposing his will.
7:44
Here they come.
7:45
We're tied at 83.
7:48
Wow, about 21 left.
7:50
Spurs down two.
7:51
Dylan Harper says, "Not on my watch."
7:53
Hits the turnaround.
7:54
J.
7:54
Harper, 25 points.
7:56
He did his best.
7:57
Tied at 88.
7:58
Next Knicks possession, it's Brunson blowing by Stephon Castle, which is tough to do.
8:04
And the MSG watch party is going crazy.
8:06
Oh my goodness, what a crowd.
8:08
Knicks up two.
8:08
Now they're up three. 26 to go.
8:10
Josh Hart at the line misses it.
8:13
Mitchell Robinson gets the offensive board and Anunoby is fouled.
8:17
Robinson checking out again fighting off two Spurs to win that board.
8:22
And he would ice the game.
8:23
What a moment. 45 points for Jalen Brunson.
8:27
Named NBA Finals MVP.
8:30
Uh, a new Messiah.
8:31
Hey Clyde, you're the best.
8:33
And look at that picture of Karl-Anthony Towns and Jalen Brunson.
8:37
You got this.
8:38
You always did.
8:40
You made us all believers.
8:42
>> Everybody in America's watching the the highlight.
8:45
>> I was watching Linda.
8:46
That's like watching Jimi Hendrix play guitar.
8:48
>> Oh, thank you.
8:49
That's awesome.
8:50
Yeah.
8:51
Man, I'll tell you, you know,
8:52
someone asked me about my New York sports uh Mount Rushmore.
8:56
It's tough, but Jalen Brunson just has added to it along with my guy
9:00
Eli Manning.
9:02
And of course uh Mark Messier, another great number 11.
9:05
>> Linda, as one of the voters for the Giants all-time 100,
9:09
we know how much you love your New York sports right there.
9:11
But lots of love for Linda Cohn.
9:15
>> Linda Cohn, the only thing better than being a co-anchor of yours is
9:20
being a friend of yours.
9:21
Do it for Babs.
9:22
Who's responsible?
9:23
Where's the stand?
9:25
Love you, LLC.
9:26
>> Linda, what an honor it was to have shared a desk with you
9:30
on SportsCenter for so many years.
9:33
I always knew our audience
9:34
and I were going to be getting the news from someone who loved it
9:38
and lived it.
9:39
Your authenticity is one of the things
9:41
that made you one of the greats of all time.
9:44
One of my favorite pictures of my daughter is from
9:47
when I brought her to work several years ago
9:50
and had her take a picture with you on the SportsCenter set.
9:54
It's a reminder to me to this day what's possible for her regardless what
9:59
she wants to do.
10:01
ESPN is not ESPN without you.
10:04
We love you and I can't wait to see what's next.
10:08
>> I'm going to make this quick because if it's long I'll cry.
10:11
I will miss you.
10:12
I love you.
10:13
You are the absolute best.
10:16
I remember doing SportsCenter shows with you, ESPN radio with you.
10:22
You are the consummate professional.
10:25
Uh absolutely fun, the best.
10:29
Um I'll miss you.
10:31
>> >> And I'm going to stop now because I told you I would cry.
10:35
>> Linda, I know where I was
10:36
when I heard that you were hired by ESPN.
10:38
I was at Costco.
10:39
I was in the television section.
10:41
I wasn't looking to buy a television that day,
10:43
but I was watching it and you were on KIRO, channel 7,
10:47
and they were saying goodbye and you moved on.
10:50
I wanted to do the same thing.
10:51
I watched you go do it.
10:53
You did it big.
10:54
You did it for a long time.
10:55
You cackle laugh during the closes
10:57
and made us stay till 4:00 a.m.
11:00
Just couldn't hold it together.
11:01
But you did hold it together to have a lengthy and legendary career.
11:05
Congratulations on that and I hope there's joy for you in whatever's next.
11:09
>> Linda Cohn, Lou Gehrig, Cal Ripken, add them up.
11:14
They didn't do what you've done.
11:15
The most SportsCenters ever.
11:18
Truly amazing.
11:20
Congratulations on that.
11:23
Listen, we met I don't know, early 90s.
11:26
You're on TV in Seattle and I said,
11:29
"I'll be seeing you along the line."
11:31
And here we are,
11:32
a third of a century later and the Swami got that one right.
11:36
>> >> Thank you for being a teammate, a colleague, and above all a friend.
11:42
For millions of viewers, congratulations.
11:46
And another prediction, we'll see you soon.
11:51
>> What amazing.
11:52
Thank you.
11:53
Gosh, golden.
11:55
>> I mean it is the the part of the fabric of what makes
11:57
this desk so special to sit at.
12:00
I know.
12:00
>> >> You don't have the same longevity as those as those greats,
12:02
but grew up a fan of you.
12:04
>> Thanks, Bill.
12:04
>> Thank you for pouring into my love of sports
12:07
and making this the best job on the planet.
12:09
>> And thank you for making this a possibility for people like me
12:13
and an incredible moment to just share this with you
12:16
and I can't wait to watch what's next.
12:18
>> Thanks so much, Maddy.
12:20
Awesome.
12:21
And thanks to everyone.
12:22
Thanks to ESPN and all everyone that I've come in contact with.
12:26
Appreciate you.
12:27
>> >> I'm going to I need a tissue. >> a record that's not
12:29
going to be broken anytime soon.
12:32
>> Untouchable.
12:33
>> Untouchable.
12:33
Remarkable.
12:35
Linda Cohn.
