by skillshare today we are going through 10 of my favorite productivity
0:05
apps for the iphone here in 2021.
0:07
though i'm actually going to start this list out with a productivity
0:10
feature of the iphone that isn't actually an app but is useful nonetheless
0:13
it's this little magnetic
0:15
wallet thing that you can get from apple that just snaps onto the back of
0:18
your phone but the cool thing is it's got this little
0:20
sliding thing where if you have a credit card that you frequently use or
0:24
in my case an office access key it's very easy to slide it up
0:27
scan it wherever you need to scan it and put it right back on
0:29
your phone just like that so i figured i'd mention that because i've been
0:32
enjoying this and it's definitely a purchase that i don't regret
0:35
let's get into the list of apps and the first app we're going to
0:38
talk about is called otter which is an amazingly
0:41
good ai voice transcription
0:43
app so as a youtuber
0:45
i get a lot of ideas for content
0:47
often at times when i can't easily either write something down or pull my
0:50
phone out to take notes and in those cases i take a lot of
0:53
voice memos but a lot of times i would love to have those voice
0:56
notes translated into so i can then port them over to notion or use
1:00
them and actually you know go through the text and edit it and things
1:03
like that otter is
1:05
freaking amazing at doing that i've tried a ton of other apps some that
1:08
have apple watch integrations
1:09
which i really would like for otter but they use this built-in siri dictation
1:13
which is just not
1:15
that great at translating your voice into readable text meanwhile
1:19
otter does not as far as i can tell have a real human shoved
1:22
into your phone who's literally
1:24
you know acting as a court
1:26
and typing out your text
1:27
but it might as
1:29
the transcription is nearly as good as the human transcription
1:33
that i actually pay for for these youtube videos
1:35
which means that when i speak something while i'm driving or i'm out on
1:38
the bike i can basically guarantee that when i come and read the text
1:42
later on it's going to look pretty much like i said it it also
1:46
keeps the audio file it's not quite as high quality of an audio file
1:50
as you get with regular voice memos so i don't use it for song
1:53
ideas but it does keep the audio file which is nice because it allows
1:55
me to export both the audio file
1:58
and the text into
1:59
drum roll please the very next app on our list which is
2:03
you saw this coming
2:04
notion so notion is an app that i talk about a lot in fact
2:08
i have a entire second channel called thomas frank explains
2:11
full of notion tutorials
2:12
link in the description
2:13
down below if you're curious
2:14
and if you haven't heard of notion it is basically an all-in-one workspace
2:17
app which allows you to take notes it allows you to manage tasks it
2:21
allows you to do pretty much anything you want and at this point i'm
2:24
using it fully for running my channel for managing my tasks for running projects
2:28
and for taking all the notes that i want to take and for writing
2:32
all the scripts for my videos
2:33
the last time i talked about notion on my channel there was no actual
2:36
official widget but now there is and in fact there are a couple that
2:40
are very useful which i want to show you right now the one that
2:43
i keep right on my home screen here is the favorites bar and a
2:46
trick that i use is i keep a dashboard
2:49
page with links to a lot of things i'm working on because i often have
2:52
more links than will fit on this widgets
2:55
area i think it only keeps
2:57
about nine links at one time so using this dashboard
3:00
i can actually create like a central place for
3:03
all of the important things in my life including my tasks my notes content
3:07
with my channel with thomas frank explains my other channel and ongoing
3:10
projects and i have like this hub page that allows me to easily get
3:13
to anything i want to get when i want to add something or reference
3:16
the other nice thing though is there's another widget which i keep over here
3:20
on this quick access area which shows you your recent pages so instead of
3:24
relying just on your manually created favorites bar you have all of your recent
3:27
pages right here and i can get to
3:29
say the research and notes for
3:32
this very and look there's otter there's notion
3:35
and there is our third app which i'm going to now smoothly transition into
3:39
so authy is a manager
3:40
for two-factor authentication codes that functions a lot like google authenticator
3:44
hopefully you are using two-factor authentication
3:47
on any account that offers it in addition to your passwords
3:50
if you care about your online security
3:52
now one thing you might not know about two-factor authentication
3:55
is there's two different types
3:56
sms based or text message based
3:58
and app-based like google authenticator
4:00
or in this case
4:01
authy sms-based authentication is actually a lot less secure because
4:05
identity thieves and you know hackers and people like that have been known to
4:09
spoof your sim card essentially calling up your phone company convincing them that they
4:14
are you and convincing them to
4:16
set up a new device with the exact same sim
4:18
so they get the text messages that you're supposed to get including
4:21
to factor off messages
4:23
which is why whenever i have the choice i use app-based
4:26
authentication instead of text message authentication
4:30
but there's a problem
4:31
with app-based two-factor auth especially with google authenticator
4:34
at least last time i used it it didn't sync
4:37
between different devices which means if you accidentally
4:39
drop your phone down an elevator shaft you're out of luck and you have
4:43
to spend a ton of time doing password resets
4:45
or hopefully pulling you know backup codes that you had for your two-factor
4:49
it's a whole big mess so that's why i like authy because you can
4:53
log into your account and get your two-factor
4:55
auth codes back and as long as you're using a secure password for that
4:58
account i think it's still pretty secure now the next step that we're going
5:01
to talk about is the only one on my list that doesn't have an
5:04
android equivalent this is an app called command
5:06
which is actually a web browser and it has a killer feature that you
5:10
probably know about if you saw my ipad video earlier this year
5:13
that feature is that you can highlight
5:14
text within any web page
5:18
and then once you highlight
5:20
not only is it going to stay
5:22
highlighted or highlit i'm not sure how you're supposed to say that
5:25
when you refresh the page but you can also tap your highlights
5:28
and you can add journal entries which allow you to essentially take notes on
5:32
the highlights you make i have written
5:34
entire articles inside commands
5:37
journal feature because i'll take a highlight from something i'm reading on the web
5:40
get inspired and then i'll just you know think i'm going to take a
5:42
little bit of a note and then it balloons into a huge article
5:45
the other thing that i love about command is it actually can send the
5:49
highlights that you take to your read wise account
5:51
and i guess i should just talk about read wise now because it is
5:54
the next app on our list so read wise is basically a highlight manager
5:59
for the knowledge that you intake from various sources
6:03
books kindle books podcasts
6:05
using an app called air which i will talk about a little bit later
6:08
even tweets and content
6:10
from your web now there is a way to sync highlights from mobile safari
6:15
to read wise but it's kind of a friction
6:18
full process and command makes it much
6:20
much easier so i love doing research and doing highlighting using the command browser
6:24
when i'm reading blog posts and
6:26
but coming back to read wise read wise is essentially a highlight manager that
6:29
can resurface and help you recall
6:31
the knowledge that you gathered over time it's got this daily review area which
6:35
will actually give you a collection
6:36
of different highlights so you can remember them more usefully
6:39
i don't use that too much what i actually do is i kind of
6:42
use this as a database
6:43
for a lot of the highlights that i take in books and other pieces
6:46
of media but the thing that i really love about raid wise is that
6:49
not only does it store all of my highlights here like these highlights from
6:53
the book askiwata that i've been reading really recently
6:56
but there is a native integration
6:58
with both notion and with rome research
7:00
and also with rem note i believe
7:02
so whenever you take a highlight from kindle or from the command browser or
7:06
from even the safari extension or
7:08
read wise to roll up a tweet thread
7:10
it'll send it to read wise and then read wise will dutifully kick that
7:13
highlight to your integration
7:15
platform in my case it's notion so i have a beautiful raidwise database
7:19
on notion where i've got all of my highlights from books and articles and
7:23
all kinds of media sources
7:24
and then when i'm doing research for an article
7:26
i can pull in my highlights
7:29
into my research areas and actually now with notions synced blocks feature i don't
7:33
even have to copy and paste i can just create a synced block and
7:35
port content over from my highlights area into
7:38
whatever article that i'm writing which is pretty sweet next up on our list
7:42
is one called tide which is my favorite pomodoro
7:44
timer for the iphone
7:46
now it's got a ton of different features it can track your stats it's
7:48
got all these sounds so you can create these soundscapes
7:51
to help you focus
7:52
personally i just like the way that it looks i like the fact that
7:55
it's free and i like the fact that i can open up i can
7:57
hit the focus button i can choose 25 minutes and i can start a
8:00
pomodoro session and like i've said before the pomodoro
8:03
technique is one of the most powerful
8:05
short-term productivity techniques there
8:07
because it externalizes the self-discipline
8:10
that you need to keep
8:11
but it also reframes your task from output based to input based as in
8:16
i have to write a paper which is really daunting and scary too i
8:19
just need to work on this paper for 25 minutes and then i'm allowed
8:22
to take a the next step on my list is actually a built-in
8:25
app in the phone so if you have an iphone you already have this
8:27
and it's the fitness app or i don't know if it's called fitness or
8:30
activity but this is absolutely
8:33
a productivity app for me because when i'm active
8:36
when i'm moving when i am exercising
8:38
every day i also feel more energetic and i get more done and i
8:42
work with more focus
8:43
exercise is absolutely associated
8:45
with cognitive performance and if you want to learn more about that there's a
8:48
great book by dr john ratey called spark
8:51
highly recommend that especially if you like books full of scientific
8:54
studies but having this app and specifically
8:56
its integration with the apple watch
8:58
and the face here that shows me around my rings every time i look
9:01
at the apple encourages
9:03
me to get my exercise
9:04
done i've actually got the trends thing activated here so i can see that
9:08
pretty much all my trends are on the up i've been moving more i've
9:11
been exercising more i've been standing more
9:14
walking more all kinds of stuff
9:16
one of my favorite things about the fitness app is the sharing aspect of
9:19
it so if we go over to the sharing tab you're going to see
9:21
that i actually have shared my fitness data and vice versa
9:25
with some of my friends brian from real engineering
9:27
who probably forgot to put on his apple watch today
9:30
my friend chris who wrote the productivity
9:32
project in hyperfocus my agent dave and also renee ritchie from the channel renee
9:37
ritchie who talks a lot about apple
9:38
so using the sharing feature we all get notified when we work out we
9:42
send each fun emojis
9:44
to encourage each other we'll sometimes
9:46
check in and be like hey how come you haven't gotten your workout done
9:48
today it adds some nice accountability
9:51
into your daily exercise routine even if your friends are far flung across the
9:56
globe next up on the list is audible which is an app that i've
9:59
been using for a very very long time but i've actually been using a
10:02
lot more heavily recently
10:04
i am now riding an e-bike
10:05
to my downtown co-working office on any day where i don't have to sit
10:08
in this chair and film videos in my studio and i absolutely
10:12
love riding my bike getting out of the house going somewhere else to work
10:15
and that whole process of writing actually about 40 miles on the e-bike
10:19
gives me a ton of time to listen to things that i can use
10:21
to educate myself so audible
10:23
is probably my number one resource for that since i love listening to audiobooks
10:27
and one thing that i did want to point out on the iphone now
10:30
that home screen widgets feature is live
10:32
is that audible has a widget which allows you to scroll down and basically
10:36
resume the last book that you were listening to or pick one of the
10:39
four that you listened to most recently other than that one so it's a
10:41
nice way to just launch into a book that you were listening to recently
10:44
without having to open up the app and wait for it to load next
10:47
up on our list is an app called adobe scan which is probably the
10:50
best document scanner app on the iphone this is going to look really weird
10:54
because you're going to see a camera and i'm moving it around
10:56
hi other camera anyway this is a great app for scanning
10:59
paper documents and then exporting them as pdfs
11:02
or as picture files and porting them into your knowledge management system in my
11:06
case it's going to be notion it might be rom research or evernote for
11:09
you but it's really nice to have a document scanner app on the phone
11:12
next up we have spotify
11:14
for podcasts yep i have finally switched over to just using spotify
11:18
as my default podcast
11:20
player i resisted it for a very long time i was a pocket casts
11:23
fan but it's good enough now in spotify
11:25
they've got the speed controls they've got the sleep timer function
11:29
and uh it's fast that's really nice thing
11:32
now i really wanted
11:34
to recommend an app
11:35
air instead of spotify
11:37
in this slot in the video
11:39
air is a really cool podcast
11:41
player that has a killer feature my friend ali abdull actually turned me on
11:45
to this app so you may have heard him talking about it if you
11:47
watch his videos but air is not just a podcast
11:50
player it's also an app that integrates with
11:53
read wise and it has this really cool feature where if you're listening to
11:56
something in a podcast
11:57
episode and you want to make a highlight of it you want to save
12:00
it you want to add a note to it you can do that by
12:03
hitting this little quote button here and it's going to save either last 30
12:07
seconds or last minute you can change
12:09
the duration if you want
12:10
and you can add a little note and it's going to send that to
12:12
raidwise which again would send to notion or roam research or rem note if
12:16
you have that integration
12:17
created it is super cool but the performance of this app is just
12:21
it's just not great right now it's slow if i want to like rewind
12:25
15 seconds it takes
12:27
like five seconds just to do it and start playing again so i'm really
12:30
hoping that they're going to improve the performance
12:32
of this app and once they do that i'm going to be probably switching
12:36
over to using it because i really do want to use that read wise
12:38
feature i just need it to be faster now if you're watching a video
12:41
on my channel about iphone apps then i would say it's probable
12:44
that you also watch one of my favorite tech
12:46
marquez brownlee aka mkbhd
12:49
and if you do i want to let you know about a new course
12:52
he just launched over on skillshare
12:53
all about how to create great youtube videos
12:56
i cannot think of many other people who i would rather have teach me
12:59
how to make a great youtube video than marquez
13:01
especially because his quality
13:03
is well let's just use the term that he uses it's absolutely
13:06
crispy it's amazing i've taken a lot of inspiration
13:09
from his setup his gear the way he films things to improve the quality
13:13
of the footage on my own channel and if you want to learn how
13:16
to upgrade your own youtube game or even start a channel if you haven't
13:19
done it yet his course over on skillshare
13:21
is a great place to start
13:23
and the wonderful thing about skillshare
13:25
is that when you join you don't just get access to marquez's
13:28
class you get access to thousands of classes that can boost your skills and
13:31
your creative abilities in a ton of different areas
13:33
including productivity because i have three different classes on skillshare
13:37
of my own one on building a productivity
13:40
system that combines apps to make sure that nothing ever falls to the cracks
13:44
also on skillshare you're going to find classes in graphic design
13:47
in video in music production
13:50
in storytelling and public speaking there is a ton that you can learn on
13:53
skillshare and it's also a very affordable
13:55
platform in fact if you are one of the first 1 000 people to
13:58
sign up for skillshare today using the link down below you're going to get
14:01
a one month free trial which means
14:03
that you can go take my classes you can go take mkbhd's
14:06
class for free and test out the platform for a month before you have
14:09
to pay anything it's a great platform i really think you're going to get
14:12
a lot of value out of it and you're going to want to keep
14:14
paying for it after that trial
14:16
is over but you've got that trial to try it out so once again
14:18
go to that link down in the description below sign up be one of the
14:21
first thousand people to get that free
14:23
one month trial thank you for watching this video hopefully you found something helpful
14:27
here and i would also like to hear from you what are your favorite
14:30
apps that i did not mention in this video
14:32
leave them down in the comment section below and we can all try new
14:34
things out and uh you know probably end up spending too much time on
14:37
our phones and not actually being productive whoops anyway i'll see you in the next video
