5 Common Shadowing Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)

Discover the 5 common shadowing mistakes that stall your progress — with simple fixes to practise speaking English more effectively.

Shadowing is one of the most effective ways to practise speaking English: you listen to a clip and repeat almost at the same time as the speaker. It sounds simple — yet many learners practise for months and still don't improve. The reason is usually a handful of small mistakes almost everyone makes. Here are the five most common shadowing mistakes and how to fix them.

1. Choosing videos that are too hard

The first and most common mistake is picking content above your level. Eager learners jump into long TED talks or fast-paced action films — then can't keep up, get discouraged, and quit.

The fix: Choose a video you understand about 80–90% of. A short 1–3 minute clip at a moderate speaking speed is ideal. On TryShadowing you can paste any YouTube link and practise one sentence at a time, so start with familiar content like daily vlogs or simple conversations.

2. Reading the subtitles instead of really listening

Many people "shadow" with their eyes glued to the captions, just reading the text aloud. That's reading, not shadowing — and you won't pick up the rhythm, intonation or natural linking of a native speaker.

The fix: The goal of shadowing is to imitate the sound, not the text. Listen a few times first to feel the melody of the sentence. Then try to repeat by focusing on what you hear. Use the captions only to check a word you're unsure of.

3. Ignoring intonation and rhythm

This mistake makes your voice sound "flat" and mechanical. You pronounce each word correctly, but the whole sentence lacks the emotion and natural rhythm of English. Listeners still hear a very "textbook" voice.

The fix: Pay attention to the music of the sentence — where it rises, where it falls, which word is stressed. Try humming the melody before adding the words, like singing along to a song. When you shadow, copy the speaker's emotion, not just the syllables.

4. Speaking along too fast, too soon

Plenty of learners try to speak at the same time as the video from the very first try — and end up mumbling and dropping half the sentence. It feels busy but does very little.

The fix: Practise in stages. First, listen and repeat after the speaker finishes the sentence (called echo shadowing). Once that's comfortable, move to speaking almost simultaneously. On TryShadowing you can repeat each sentence many times and adjust the speed, so slow down before you speed up.

5. Practising inconsistently

The last mistake isn't about technique but about habit. Many people shadow for an hour on the weekend, then don't touch it all week. Your mouth muscles and sound memory need frequent repetition to build a reflex.

The fix: Ten to fifteen minutes a day beats one long session. Attach shadowing to an existing habit — right after your morning coffee, for example. Consistency matters more than duration.

Start practising the right way today

Shadowing isn't hard, but it has to be done right. Choose a video at your level, focus on sound instead of text, copy the intonation, go from slow to fast, and practise every day. Avoid these five mistakes and you'll notice your speech becoming noticeably more natural and fluent.

Open a YouTube video you love, paste the link into TryShadowing, and shadow your first line. Every sentence you repeat the right way is a step closer to speaking English with confidence. You can also browse by level to find clips that fit you.
