Hey English learners, welcome to this A1 English listening practice video.
0:07
Today, let's talk about some different reasons why people learn English.
0:16
There are many reasons to learn English.
0:20
You probably have one or two or maybe more reasons why you're learning English.
0:30
I want to talk about different reasons to learn English today
0:37
because this is important.
0:40
It's important to have a good reason to learn
0:45
because when you have a good reason,
0:48
it helps keep you focused on your learning.
0:53
It helps you continue to learn and not give up.
0:59
And it motivates you.
1:02
It gives you the motivation you need to learn English.
1:09
So, that's what we're going to talk about today.
1:13
And before we do that,
1:15
I want to remind you
1:17
that if you need my help to understand native English speakers
1:23
when they speak fast,
1:25
then make sure to join my membership
1:28
so you can watch my listening practice seminars in
1:33
which I help you understand fast English.
1:37
So that link is down below.
1:41
All right, let's talk about some different reasons why people learn English.
1:48
The first one I want to talk about is entertainment.
1:55
Many people want to learn English because they like English language entertainment.
2:05
Maybe they like watching TV, TV shows or TV series in English.
2:14
Maybe they like watching American movies, for example.
2:20
Or perhaps they really like music
2:25
and they want to listen to music in English.
2:29
Or maybe they're interested in video games
2:34
and they want to talk to other people
2:40
while they're playing video games
2:43
and they need to talk in English.
2:47
So entertainment can be a really good motivator for people to learn English
2:56
and it can also be really effective
3:00
as well because when you enjoy something you do it more,
3:08
right?
3:09
When you like doing something, it's not that hard for you to do it.
3:17
You enjoy it.
3:19
So, you do it easily.
3:24
And when you enjoy doing something,
3:28
you focus more on it when you do it, right?
3:35
And also you learn more when you enjoy something, when it's entertaining to you.
3:45
You focus more and learn more.
3:50
You probably remember more from what you watch or hear.
3:57
So, uh I know people who have accidentally learned a language, maybe not fluently,
4:08
but they've learned uh some language to uh a good level maybe
4:19
because they're so interested in the entertainment from some country like for example uh
4:30
they might really like Korean dramas
4:35
and so they watch
4:38
so many Korean dramas
4:41
and eventually they start to understand Korean.
4:46
I've heard of this before.
4:49
Or maybe they're really interested in Japanese anime
4:56
and they watch so much anime
5:00
that eventually they start to understand Japanese.
5:07
Maybe they can't speak it, but they can already understand a lot.
5:15
This is pretty crazy
5:18
because these people might not even care about the language of
5:26
that drama or that anime,
5:30
but they're so interested in that entertainment that they learn the language.
5:39
That's pretty cool.
5:41
So many people can learn English
5:47
because they want to watch things in English
5:52
or listen to things in English
5:56
or maybe they get good at English
6:00
because they like playing video games.
6:04
This is common.
6:06
So, this can be a good reason to learn English.
6:12
I'm not saying that this is the best reason uh to play video games,
6:19
but I'm saying that many people learn English because of this reason.
6:27
So, that's one thing.
6:30
Another reason why many people want to learn English is because they like traveling.
6:40
Learning English makes traveling easier.
6:45
So when you travel to an Englishspeaking country and you can speak English,
6:55
this makes things a lot easier.
6:59
This makes things simpler.
7:03
And even if you're traveling to a country where the people don't speak English
7:12
as a native language,
7:14
many people probably speak English as a second language.
7:21
So, you can also use English a lot
7:26
when you travel to countries
7:29
that aren't the US
7:31
or the UK.
7:33
Um, if you travel to other European countries perhaps, uh,
7:40
you'll probably be able to speak English with many people there.
7:48
So that can really help you when you travel.
7:54
It can uh help you communicate with local people.
8:00
Uh maybe uh read signs
8:04
or websites or whatever you need
8:11
when you're traveling or you're planning a trip.
8:17
So, that can help.
8:20
And you can also uh make friends when you're traveling.
8:26
Uh, I've known people
8:29
that have made friends
8:32
when they travel to other countries
8:35
because maybe they take a tour
8:40
and in that tour group they speak English to the other tourists who are
8:49
taking that tour.
8:51
So that can help them make friends with other tourists
8:58
or they can make friends with locals
9:02
as well.
9:03
So learning English can make traveling easier and funner, right?
9:12
That's another good reason to learn English.
9:16
Another reason why people might learn English is because of their career.
9:24
This is a very common reason.
9:29
Maybe you're learning English to help you in your career.
9:34
So if you can speak English,
9:38
maybe you can work with international clients or customers.
9:47
Uh maybe you can work in an international company
9:53
and you need English
9:56
because your co-workers speak English.
10:01
Um, or maybe if you speak English, you'll have more opportunities in your work.
10:10
Or maybe you'll have the opportunity to work abroad, work in another country.
10:20
So there are many opportunities
10:24
that you uh can have
10:29
if you speak English
10:31
and uh also for academics for school,
10:38
right?
10:39
University.
10:40
Um, knowing English can be very helpful
10:46
because it can help you research things in English.
10:52
Uh, the internet is full of information in English.
10:59
So, if you can speak English,
11:03
you have a lot of information
11:07
that you can use. uh
11:10
when you are doing um different types of school work uh
11:18
when you're writing things for your university etc. right?
11:26
You have a lot of information uh
11:29
that you can use
11:31
when you speak English.
11:34
If this is your reason for learning English,
11:38
you want to have more career opportunities
11:43
or it helps you in your uh academics,
11:48
your school.
11:49
Um, this is great, but you should still have a reason that's more personal.
11:59
Uh, you don't want to only learn English because you have to because uh,
12:07
your boss makes you learn English or your school makes you learn English.
12:15
It's also good to have a personal reason uh why you want to learn
12:24
not because you have to learn
12:27
but because you want to learn.
12:31
If you have a more personal reason it will help you be more motivated.
12:39
So, one more reason why some people learn English is because of love.
12:47
Because they fall in love with someone who speaks English.
12:54
Uh if you meet someone who speaks English and they don't speak your language,
13:03
this is the greatest motivation to learn English
13:09
because uh you love this person
13:14
and you need to communicate with them
13:19
and you can only do this in English.
13:23
This is a great motivator.
13:27
This is probably the top reason uh the reason
13:35
that gives you the most motivation.
13:39
So, uh I know this from experience.
13:44
I learned Spanish because of love.
13:49
because I fell in love with someone who speaks
13:55
that language.
13:57
So, uh this was uh the best uh motivator.
14:04
This gave me the most motivation to learn.
14:09
So, most of you won't do this,
14:12
but it's a good lesson for you to know this.
14:20
Even if you don't do this,
14:22
it's good to know this
14:25
because it shows you how important it is to have a good personal reason
14:34
to learn a language.
14:36
When you have this, it makes learning English much easier.
14:42
You want to do it.
14:45
You spend more time doing it.
14:49
Uh it becomes easier to uh do the necessary things to learn English.
14:59
So, even if you don't fall in love with someone who speaks English,
15:06
you should still find a good personal reason to learn.
15:12
Okay, I hope this video was helpful for you and for your listening.
15:19
