1:41 All right, let's get started
1:43 and get some wonderful advice for how to be a more confident,
1:47 fluent English speaker.
1:49 Let's go.
1:50 >> Hi, Gareth.
1:52 >> Hello.
1:52 >> Would you like to introduce yourself?
1:54 >> Hi, everybody.
1:54 Yes, I'm Gareth Aka Dr.
1:56 Popkins and I teach German on YouTube.
1:59 >> Wonderful.
1:59 Well, what kind of tip would you give to students who want to speak
2:02 better?
2:03 I think it's the same as I say to my students of German really,
2:06 Vanessa, to be honest,
2:07 which is actually paradoxically lots of listening practice >>
2:11 because you need to be confident you can understand the other person
2:14 if you're going to be relaxed in a conversation
2:17 or in an exchange in a shop
2:18 or store,
2:19 for example, yourself.
2:20 So, listen a lot
2:22 and it will feed into your confidence uh
2:24 when you're in conversations.
2:26 >> I love it.
2:26 I love it because conversations are two-way.
2:28 You have to be able to understand, not just speak.
2:30 I love it.
2:31 And of course, everybody likes a good listener.
2:33 So, worry less about what you're saying
2:35 and listen more to what the other person is saying.
2:38 >> That's good life advice.
2:39 Thank you.
2:40 >> Hi, Mike.
2:41 >> Hey.
2:41 >> So, could you introduce yourself?
2:43 >> Uh, my name is teacher Mike aka Mike
2:45 or Mikeer as my YouTube channel is teacher Mike Lower.
2:49 I teach English to Chinese speakers mostly.
2:52 >> Awesome.
2:52 So, what kind of advice do you have for people who want to become
2:55 better speakers,
2:56 better English speakers or just speakers?
2:58 So, the best advice I would say for me learning Chinese was a little
3:03 bit of flash cards,
3:04 but mostly reading books out loud.
3:08 >> Oh, >> so I would get the grammar naturally.
3:10 I'd recognize more characters and yeah, just practice my speaking.
3:15 >> I like that.
3:16 Thanks.
3:16 >> No problem.
3:17 >> Hi, Elisa.
3:19 >> Hi.
3:19 >> Would you like to introduce yourself?
3:20 >> Yeah.
3:21 Hi, I'm Elisa and I teach French on my YouTube channel,
3:25 French Mornings with Elisa.
3:27 >> Nice. and I am one of your students.
3:28 So, thank you for all that you do.
3:30 >> Thank you for your trust.
3:32 >> So, what kind of advice would you give for students who want to
3:35 speak better,
3:35 speak better in English or French?
3:37 >> Uh, one thing I used to do
3:38 and I and I think
3:40 that really helped me
3:40 when I was learning English was learning through music.
3:44 >> Oh.
3:44 >> And I would like listen to songs
3:46 and I would print out the lyrics of my favorite songs
3:49 and just try to memorize everything.
3:52 So there are so many different genres
3:54 that there's >> there's something
3:56 that you're going to like.
3:57 So just find like the kind of music you you like.
4:01 >> Some people don't like to sing.
4:02 I can understand that.
4:03 But it's just fun.
4:04 Like you don't have to do it in public.
4:06 I feel like everyone likes music and likes listening to music.
4:12 >> Bathroom.
4:12 It's good practice.
4:12 You don't really have to think about like the errors and things.
4:15 Just focus on pronunciation and u Oh, I like that.
4:18 And maybe you can even pick up
4:19 and remember things too
4:20 because there's a tune.
4:22 It's easier to remember like lots of slang, you know,
4:25 um some very useful sentences that >> Oh, that's great.
4:28 >> Cool.
4:29 Great tip.
4:29 Thank you.
4:30 >> Thank you.
4:31 >> Hi, Virginia.
4:32 >> Hi, Vanessa.
4:33 >> Would you like to introduce yourself?
4:35 >> Sure.
4:35 Hi, I'm Virginia Langghammer from Speaking Brazilian.
4:38 >> Great.
4:38 Well, thank you so much.
4:39 I'm curious, what kind of advice do you have for students who want to
4:42 become better speakers of English
4:44 or Portuguese?
4:45 What would you say?
4:46 >> Of course.
4:47 I think I would say relax.
4:50 Don't worry too much about making mistakes or having an accent.
4:53 As you can hear, I don't know if you can hear,
4:55 but I have this Brazilian accent and I'm totally okay with that.
4:59 But at the beginning, I was not.
5:00 I was like, "Oh, I sound too much Brazilian.
5:02 How can what can I do to sound like an American?"
5:05 And then when I accepted myself, I accepted my accent.
5:08 Then I was like, "Oh, actually, I can communicate really well.
5:11 I can, you know,
5:12 be happy in English
5:13 and have friends and don't stress about all like the those small little mistakes
5:17 that I make all the time.
5:18 And that's okay.
5:19 Everyone understands me.
5:20 I can communicate really well in English.
5:23 Yeah.
5:23 >> And also that applies to any language, I guess.
5:25 >> Yeah.
5:26 Yeah.
5:26 When you're relaxed, you're able to just enjoy yourself more and speak better.
5:31 I think when you're relaxed, you speak better.
5:33 >> Yeah.
5:33 I think it's stress too much about speaking, right?
5:35 Like you you get stuck because am I saying this right?
5:39 Just relax.
5:40 Take a deep breath.
5:42 >> You'll be okay even if you make mistakes.
5:44 >> Oh, I love it.
5:45 Thank you.
5:46 >> You're welcome.
5:48 >> Hi, Greg.
5:49 >> Hi.
5:49 >> Would you like to introduce yourself?
5:51 >> Yeah, I'm Greg from English with Greg and Yeah. here with Vanessa today.
5:55 >> Awesome.
5:56 Well, what kind of advice would you give to students who want to be
5:59 better speakers of English
6:00 as an English teacher?
6:02 >> Yeah.
6:02 Uh so one thing
6:03 that I always like to help my students with
6:05 which is something that they don't often work on is the word stress.
6:11 >> So one thing
6:12 that I notice and I correct a lot of people's pronunciation
6:15 and I hear a lot of people speaking English
6:18 as a foreign language
6:21 but a lot of the pronunciation mistakes is
6:23 because they put the syllable stress on the wrong syllable >>
6:26 and it can really really make it confusing
6:29 and difficult to understand.
6:30 >> Yeah.
6:31 Yeah.
6:31 So that like rhythm and the tune, the flow of English.
6:35 >> Exactly.
6:35 >> Oh, I like
6:35 that because every native language has some kind of rhythm >>
6:39 and each word >> has one stressed syllable.
6:42 So if you say I live near Manchester, maybe people say, "What?
6:46 What?
6:46 Manchester, where's that?"
6:47 But if you say, "Near Manchester," it's much clearer.
6:51 >> Yeah, I like that.
6:52 >> Yeah, I always help my students with that.
6:55 Focus on the stressed syllable when you're learning the pronunciation of a word.
6:58 >> Great.
6:59 Thank you so much.
7:00 I probably >> Hi, Davidid.
7:02 >> Hey, Vanessa.
7:03 >> Could you introduce yourself?
7:04 >> Yeah, my name is Davidida.
7:06 I'm from Italy and I teach Italian on YouTube and on my podcast.
7:11 >> Cool.
7:11 Cool.
7:11 So, what kind of advice would you give to learners who want to be
7:14 better speakers of English
7:16 or Italian?
7:18 >> Speakers specifically or learners in general cuz that I would give different answers.
7:23 >> Okay.
7:23 Whatever is your best advice.
7:26 What would you like to share?
7:27 The thing I always recommend is comprehensible input.
7:31 >> Okay.
7:31 Can you explain that?
7:32 >> Yeah, that means listen a lot
7:35 and read and also listen
7:37 and read at the same time
7:39 if you can with the subtitles
7:41 if you're watching a movie >>
7:43 and make sure you understand a good amount of what you're exposing yourself to.
7:50 >> So, not too hard, not 100%.
7:52 It has to be it has to be a little hard
7:54 because that way you're learning new phrases,
7:56 new words, >> but it shouldn't be too hard
7:59 because >> then it's discouraging
8:00 and >> you're just going to quit.
8:03 >> Yeah.
8:03 I like >> do that a lot.
8:04 >> Yeah.
8:05 And that comprehensible input makes it feel less daunting
8:09 because you can understand most it could be more enjoyable too.
8:13 >> Exactly.
8:13 >> I know a lot of learners are like should I use subtitles
8:15 and you're saying subtitles in the language you want to learn >> you're reading
8:19 and listening.
8:20 So you get two types of input.
8:22 >> Exactly.
8:22 Then you associate the spelling which is hard in English to the sound.
8:26 >> I like that.
8:27 >> And uh that's very useful as well.
8:29 >> Cool.
8:29 Thank you.
8:30 >> Thank you.
8:31 >> Hi Luke.
8:32 >> Hi.
8:32 >> Would you like to introduce yourself?
8:34 >> Hi.
8:34 I'm Luke.
8:35 I teach phonetics and British English pronunciation.
8:38 >> Great.
8:38 Well, do you have any tips for English learners who want to speak better
8:43 English,
8:43 feel more confident in what they're doing?
8:45 >> Absolutely. uh when we're speaking English, we often use the same words.
8:50 So maybe there are five words we usually use in our work
8:52 or our social lives.
8:54 So find those five words
8:56 and make sure that you can pronounce them
8:59 so that everyone understands.
9:00 And if you find
9:02 that perhaps there are some words in your work
9:04 that people in meetings kind of look a bit confused,
9:07 then look those words up.
9:09 You can easily do it on Google.
9:11 You just type in define plus the word
9:13 and then you can listen to how it's pronounced.
9:15 And um if you know those um phonetic symbols, of course,
9:18 you could use those too.
9:19 >> Oh, I like that because when you can be understood,
9:21 then you can kind of gain
9:22 that confidence that these things I say again
9:24 and again,
9:25 people are going to understand.
9:27 >> Absolutely.
9:27 >> Oh, I like that.
9:28 Cool.
9:28 Well, thank you so much.
9:29 >> Thank you.
9:30 >> Hi, Leo.
9:31 >> Hi, Vanessa.
9:32 >> Could you introduce yourself?
9:33 >> Yes.
9:33 So, uh my name is Leonardo.
9:35 I'm from Lisbon, Portugal,
9:36 and I teach European Portuguese on YouTube at Portuguese with Leo.
9:41 >> Awesome.
9:41 Well, I have a question, a burning question.
9:44 Um, what kind of advice would you give to students who want to be
9:47 better speakers of English,
9:48 of Portuguese, >> any ways that they're learning?
9:51 >> What would you say?
9:52 >> So, the way I learned English was I was very fortunate to be
9:55 exposed to a lot of English growing up,
9:57 a lot of American English through TV and movies.
10:00 And then as a teenager, I started reading in English.
10:02 So, just consuming the language, just being surrounded by it.
10:07 Just be it audio, so be it movies, TV shows, podcast, music,
10:11 >> be it visual, be it text, you know, reading in the language,
10:14 just live like a native speaker, and surround yourselves with it.
10:18 >> I like that cuz you're not just separating this is my English study time.
10:21 It's just in your life.
10:22 >> Exactly.
10:23 Don't see the language as a subject like that you study like history.
10:26 See it as your way of interacting with the world,
10:29 which is hard at first, >> but then it'll progressively become easier.
10:33 >> Yeah.
10:33 And I bet a lot of students who want to start thinking in English
10:37 can do that more easily
10:38 if their phone's in English,
10:39 if they're listening to English music, if their Google Maps is in English.
10:42 Just that kind of >> their entire if they live in an English bubble.
10:45 >> Yeah, I like that.
10:47 Hi, Brenda.
10:48 Hi, Vanessa.
10:49 Could you introduce yourself?
10:50 Hello, everyone.
10:51 My name is Brenda.
10:52 U Brenda Romano is my name.
10:54 I'm from Argentina.
10:56 Wonderful.
10:56 And what do you teach?
10:57 So, I'm a teacher of Spanish and my school is called Ola Spanish.
11:02 >> Awesome.
11:02 Well, what kind of advice do you have for students who are either learning
11:06 Spanish or English and just want to be better speakers?
11:09 >> Absolutely.
11:09 Well, the I have two.
11:10 I'm going to give you two.
11:11 I think the first one is to find a teacher like Vanessa
11:14 that you really resonate with.
11:16 >> I think it's really fantastic to to find someone
11:19 that you know that you can learn from
11:20 and that you connect with this person >>
11:23 because I think that motivates you really to continue progressing in your English.
11:27 >> Right.
11:28 Right.
11:28 And then you feel like you're enjoying yourself
11:30 because you're not just listening to a boring teacher
11:33 that you don't connect with,
11:34 someone you enjoy.
11:35 Oh, I like that.
11:36 >> You know, sometimes in school they if it's compulsory,
11:39 sometimes you don't connect with the teacher.
11:40 And I think it really impacts how much you will actually learn, >> right?
11:44 And I think all of us remember a really good teacher from the past.
11:47 Maybe there's one or two and they really make an impact.
11:50 So now we're adults.
11:51 We can choose those teachers who they are.
11:53 Or has it ever happened to you
11:54 that sometimes you say something
11:56 that was inspiring or
11:57 or lifech changing and
11:59 then someone that you live with
12:01 or your parents or someone they say like I've been telling you
12:03 that for years and I cuz I really think it's sometimes you need to
12:08 hear something from a particular person >> to really sink in.
12:12 It's something about connection with people.
12:13 I truly believe in connecting with people and it's true, you know.
12:17 >> That's great.
12:17 I love that.
12:18 Sometimes it's the right person at the right time telling you the right the
12:20 right thing.
12:22 Cool.
12:22 Well, what is your magic advice number two?
12:24 >> Oh, yes.
12:24 The number two I would say once you get into an intermediate level
12:28 and this is something I did with with my English is to try to
12:32 create an immersive experience even
12:34 if you are at home.
12:35 So, for example, you listen every morning to Vanessa
12:38 and you do like a a lesson.
12:40 Uh then you if you want to watch movies,
12:42 try to watch it always in English.
12:43 You can put the subtitles.
12:45 I would say I would I changed everything my phone my computer all the
12:49 settings for everything into English to >> create this immersive experience feel like you
12:54 are actually >> interacting in English all the time like all the settings like
12:59 you know sometimes I don't even know how what what is
13:01 that in Spanish where you're like go to aostes
13:03 and I'm like where is the settings um
13:06 so anything like that read books books in English listen to English songs anything
13:10 that is that creates this environment
13:12 that you're living even
13:14 if you're where you are right now is not an English uh speaking country.
13:17 >> I like that.
13:17 A lot of people aren't in an English-speaking country.
13:19 And even if they are, life is busy.
13:21 You don't often have time to set aside 2 hours a day.
13:24 But if everything you're doing is just in English, then easy peasy.
13:28 It's a lot easier.
13:28 And also, if you have a friend or a sister, for example,
13:31 I used to speak English with my sister just to practice.
13:33 >> Oh, that's cute.
13:34 And it got to a point that, you know,
13:35 my my parents didn't speak English.
13:37 So it was our little secret language where we could communi communicate
13:41 and like talk about something
13:43 that maybe we didn't want to share with the rest of the world.
13:45 So if you can actually find someone
13:47 as well to practice
13:48 and interact in that language.
13:51 Bonus points.
13:52 >> That's great.
13:52 I love it.
13:53 Thank you so much and welcome.
13:55 >> Hi Michelle.
13:56 Hi Vanessa.
13:57 >> Could you introduce yourself?
13:59 Hi.
14:00 My name is Michelle.
14:01 I teach Italian.
14:02 My channel is Interpretered Time with Michelle
14:04 and I help heritage learners
14:06 and those that are passionate about Italy uh learn Italian
14:09 as adults,
14:10 which can be a little bit daunting.
14:12 >> So, I learned Italian as an adult, so I like to be there.
14:15 >> I love that.
14:16 >> The cheerleader and support system.
14:17 That is doable.
14:18 >> Yeah, you're the role model.
14:20 >> Maybe that should be me someday.
14:21 I have Italian heritage.
14:23 Maybe someday I will be your student, too.
14:25 >> Oh, cool.
14:26 What do you think of that?
14:27 Ah, well, I'm curious.
14:28 Do you have any advice for students who want to speak English better,
14:32 want to speak Italian better?
14:34 Cuz it's a big it's a big thing to start speaking, feel confident.
14:38 What What's your advice?
14:40 >> Yeah.
14:40 Well, speaking specifically, so I think a lot of like for me like learning
14:46 Italian,
14:47 speaking Italian for the first time, you know, it's it's nerve-wracking, you know.
14:50 So, I feel like
14:52 if you can find one person
14:54 that you don't feel
14:54 so self-conscious around >> Yeah. >>
14:56 and start there and you build up the confidence
14:59 and those like every time you meet someone new,
15:02 you usually say the same things about yourself,
15:05 the conversation usually starts off the same way.
15:07 So, if you can practice like your autobiograph autobiography, so to speak, >> hi,
15:12 my name is Michelle.
15:13 I'm from Australia.
15:14 My dad's Italian.
15:15 Like all these things I I tend to say a lot.
15:19 Yeah, >> if you can learn that in whatever language you're learning,
15:21 English in this case, >> the more you say it,
15:24 the more easily it comes to you.
15:26 >> Yeah, I like >>
15:27 and that that builds confidence
15:28 and then from there you can start to progress.
15:31 >> Yeah, I like
15:32 that cuz sometimes we feel like in conversations there's no way to know what
15:36 to expect,
15:36 but we kind of do sometimes like what's your job?
15:39 Where are you from?
15:40 Why do you live here?
15:41 There's >> why you learning English?
15:42 Why are you learning English?
15:43 I know I ask my students those all the time.
15:45 Yeah.
15:45 >> So if you're a little bit prepared,
15:47 that can help just kind of boost you into the rest of the conversation
15:50 more comfortably,
15:51 like a little icebreaker.
15:53 >> Absolutely.
15:53 So yeah, finding someone
15:54 that you trust that you don't feel
15:55 so self-conscious around.
15:58 >> Yeah.
15:58 >> And also it helps
15:59 if you know that the other person maybe doesn't speak any English
16:02 or sorry any other language other than English
16:05 and you're forced to cuz
16:06 then you know,
16:07 well, they don't know my language.
16:09 I only know theirs and they I think that's a really nice boost.
16:13 I'm the sort of the one
16:14 that has this skill
16:15 that I'm able to speak in your language.
16:17 >> Yeah.
16:17 And then you're kind of forced to speak in that together and practice.
16:20 Cool.
16:21 Oh, I love it.
16:21 >> Cuz then you don't feel so self-conscious.
16:23 >> Like a friend of mine was like traveling through uh Russia on the
16:27 train like Trans Siberian.
16:29 And I just thought it was amazing
16:30 that they could just have broken conversations with the little Russian
16:33 that they knew.
16:34 >> And I just it was a beautiful story to hear.
16:37 So >> yeah, just the confidence to be able to go for it
16:40 and just try your best.
16:42 >> Yeah.
16:42 And also know that it's it's all in your head.
16:45 Like they're not judging you the same way you're judging yourself.
16:48 >> Yes.
16:48 Yeah.
16:48 >> Yeah.
16:49 It's all up here.
16:50 >> You're your own worst critic.
16:51 So anyone else is just going to give you more grace than you give
16:54 yourself.
16:54 >> Yeah.
16:55 It's definitely a mind game.
16:56 But you realize actually they're not judging me like I'm judging myself.
17:00 Like >> Yeah.
17:01 Yeah.
17:02 >> They're like, "Wow, you speak English."
17:04 Yeah.
17:04 >> Yeah.
17:04 I like that.
17:05 Supportive.
17:06 >> Well, thank you so much.
19:34 Vanessa Brazilian. forch.
19:34 Fore natural. foreign.
19:34 Hi, Stephan.
19:34 >> Hi, Vanessa.
19:34 >> Would you like to introduce yourself?
19:36 >> Hi, my name is Stephan and I teach Italian as a second language.
19:39 >> Awesome.
19:40 Well, do you have any tips for people who would like to become better
19:43 speakers of Italian or English?
19:45 >> Absolutely.
19:46 I think exposure is key.
19:48 So, watch movies, TV shows,
19:51 listen to podcasts so
19:53 that you can just uh get used to the English language,
19:57 Italian language or any language.
19:59 And um yeah, it's going to help you a lot.
20:02 Yeah, >> I think when you hear different speakers too,
20:04 you can kind of get used to different voices and tones, voice and intonation,
20:09 accents.
20:09 Yeah.
20:10 Yeah.
20:10 You can get more confident when you meet those people.
20:13 >> Absolutely.
20:13 >> In the real world.
20:14 Cool.
20:15 Well, thank you.
20:16 >> Thank you.
20:16 Thank you.
20:16 Bye.
20:17 >> Hi, Connor.
20:18 >> Hi, Vanessa.
20:19 >> Would you like to introduce yourself?
20:21 >> Sure.
20:22 Hi, my name is Connor.
20:23 I teach Spanish on a channel called Breakthrough Spanish on YouTube.
20:27 >> Awesome.
20:28 Tell me what kind of advice would you give for people who are wanting
20:31 to improve their Spanish speaking skills,
20:33 English speaking skills?
20:35 >> That's a good question.
20:36 I think one of my favorite things to do is to practice speaking by
20:40 myself or even writing by myself first
20:43 and then speaking about the same thing
20:46 because sometimes speaking with somebody else can be kind of intimidating.
20:49 And when you practice on your own,
20:50 it gives you a bit of a chance to practice things without having to
20:55 feel the pressure of someone else with you.
20:57 >> Yeah, I like that.
20:58 I've done that a lot.
20:59 Whenever I'm about to speak like in French,
21:02 I just practice with myself while I'm driving and, you know,
21:05 probably look a little crazy to other people,
21:07 but it's so helpful cuz then you feel really prepared.
21:10 It's not like the first time you've gone into a conversation.
21:13 >> Exactly.
21:14 I've definitely done that. speaking without having practiced before.
21:18 It's a little stressful and yeah,
21:20 it feels weird to speak on your own at first,
21:21 but you get used to it and it's really useful.
21:23 >> Oh, that's awesome.
21:24 Well, thank you so much.
21:25 >> Yeah, thank you.
21:27 >> And now for my tip.
21:28 In order to be a better English speaker,
21:30 I recommend that you speak in English at least 30 minutes per week with
21:36 someone else,
21:36 ideally.
21:37 That way, you've got this deadline
21:39 and you are more motivated to practice throughout the week.
21:42 Maybe you take some of these other wonderful teachers tips
21:45 and you do that throughout the week
21:47 and that will prepare you for really speaking with someone.
21:50 It could be someone online.
21:51 It could be a friend.
21:52 It could be a teacher.
21:54 It doesn't matter who it is.
21:55 But when you have
21:56 that date set and you know
21:58 that you're going to be speaking with someone else.
22:00 It can be a really big motivation to push yourself
22:04 and to really study throughout the week.
22:06 So, I recommend trying to find a time
22:08 when you can speak with someone else,
22:09 anyone else in English once a week.
22:11 You can do it.
