These guys just stole my entire
0:01
bowl of Halloween candy even though the sign
0:04
clearly says take one.
0:05
But what they don't realize
0:07
is I've spent a year preparing
0:08
for this exact situation.
0:11
Because this year candy thieves will have to deal with booby traps such as
0:14
silly string, collapsible tables,
0:16
full-size candy bars being swapped for toothbrushes,
0:19
actual human hands to stop the thievery that just materialize
0:23
out of nowhere, and even some high-tech
0:25
systems producing wanted posters of themselves
0:27
all over the neighborhood,
0:29
which means they get offered
0:30
the healthy candy bowl.
0:32
Every year in America
0:33
kids dress up in costumes
0:35
and knock on doors asking for candy.
0:37
But in many cases, if the homeowner is out trick-or-treating
0:40
with their own young kids, they'll just leave a bowl of candy out and
0:43
then rely on the honor system for everyone to take just one piece each.
0:47
And since last year was my final year of making glitter bombs to catch
0:50
our porch pirates, I felt it was time for me to graduate
0:55
to the true criminals,
0:56
the punk teenagers and even sometimes
0:59
terrible parents You monster,
1:01
give me back who take all the candy from the bowls
1:04
so there's none left
1:06
for any of the other little kids. What the heck?
1:08
So to come up with the perfect revenge,
1:10
I knew I needed to enlist the help of the foremost
1:12
expert when it comes to Halloween pranks.
1:14
We ate all your candy.
1:20
Just the kind of person
1:21
who would put out a challenge like this.
1:23
We ate all your Halloween candy.
1:27
You know who told me to do it? Mr. Jimmy Kimmel.
1:31
Jimmy, what's up, Jimmy, you are the I told my kids I eat their Halloween candy guy. I am.
1:38
I'm the glitter bomb guy.
1:39
I feel like if you combine
1:40
those, then you get we're going to prank kids who take more than one piece of candy.
1:44
Oh, I thought we were going to make kids eat a glitter bomb.
1:47
So we kicked off the brainstorm
1:48
and quickly stumbled on some good ideas.
1:50
Something like 10 times that average weight leaves the bowl.
1:53
Devices in the candy itself. Shine on them. That's good.
1:57
Or you just start rocking slowly.
1:59
As well as some really good Breed monkeys. Breed monkeys.
2:03
Get them real crazy. Real crazy.
2:06
Teach them to protect their candy.
2:08
But what if they're just going to take one though?
2:10
Well, then we have a problem.
2:11
I don't But in the end, like any pair of good engineers would, we
2:15
ran some tests in the interest of child safety. Lost the head.
2:34
Probably should make sure that doesn't happen in real life.
2:36
For At which point we had all the data we It's important.
2:44
It's this work that you're doing. Yeah, of course.
2:48
Which meant all we needed now
2:49
was a 15-second build montage.
3:06
And so in the end we landed at 10 different options
3:08
to honor my traditional
3:09
approach to engineering of bringing a cruise
3:12
missile to a knife Aw.
3:14
Starting first by punishing
3:16
greedy candy thieves with your standard
3:18
run-of-the-mill remote triggered spinning candy bowl.
3:21
This contraption also features
3:23
a car horn and an RF-enabled
3:24
trapdoor with dual sweeping silly string canisters
3:28
that will leave the thief reconsidering their life choices.
3:30
Next up, we have the standard-looking
3:32
table with a catch.
3:33
Because if the custom-built
3:34
weight sensor under the bowl powered by a load cell or microcontroller
3:38
detects that too much weight is removed in too short amount of time, well
3:41
then it triggers this quick release, which makes the hinged legs unstable,
3:46
meaning the candy thief will think their actions
3:49
caused the whole table to
3:51
And of course, with safety
3:52
always as our number one priority,
3:54
those glass jars are actually sugar
3:56
glass, which look and behave
3:58
like normal glass but are totally harmless.
4:01
And also, as it turns out, don't taste like sugar.
4:04
For this next one, the thief will come to the door, steal the candy,
4:06
and then have no idea I'm about to scare the crud out of them.
4:09
See if you can spot me Mulch man.
4:20
I'M THE MULCH MAN.
4:23
NOW, IF YOUR first thought was that I was hiding as the scarecrow,
4:26
that's by design, and the thief will think the same.
4:29
Because this rocker crank linkage slowly
4:31
rocks the chair back and forth.
4:32
But then we've intentionally
4:34
positioned the head to reveal that it's fake, luring them into a false sense
4:37
of security so they steal the candy
4:39
and meet the mulch man.
4:43
Now of course, before they take the candy, I can't see what's going on
4:45
under there, and a normal porch camera has way too much delay.
4:48
But it turns out a baby monitor
4:50
is the perfect solution
4:52
with almost zero latency.
4:53
Next up, we have an actual human hand that somehow materializes
4:57
out of a candy bowl to stop any would-be thieves.
5:00
And we do this by taking a page from the Zach King playbook
5:03
by putting a full-size
5:04
mirror diagonally down the middle
5:06
so it reflects a fake image allowing me to hide under the table in ready position.
5:10
Once again, the baby monitor comes in clutch here to help with the timing.
5:16
For this next one, we raise the stakes and drop them right in the
5:18
center of a candy theft sting operation
5:21
with a couple cleverly concealed lights and a loudspeaker.
5:24
Go back and replace your candy. Aw, your candy.
5:31
And now with mission accomplished,
5:32
the message loop switches to entertainment
5:35
all the Fortnite dances.
5:39
Now the remaining five ideas really level up the sophistication
5:42
because they rely on multiple houses.
5:44
Starting with this first one where once the weight sensor detects a steal, the
5:47
mailbox containing a Raspberry Pi takes a picture,
5:50
runs a facial detection algorithm, then automatically
5:52
crops the face and prints this template at a neighbor's house
5:55
all within 10 seconds.
5:58
Then once the door is answered,
6:00
they now know that you now know, and you switch from full-size candy bars to toothbrushes.
6:05
Because I honestly remember as a kid feeling so offended when a neighborhood dentist
6:08
would pass out toothbrushes
6:09
instead of giving us the candy
6:11
that was our god-given right.
6:13
Now this next one is pretty simple
6:15
yet effective because once you've confirmed a steal next door, they come to your
6:18
porch and you place a specific
6:20
set of candies in their back.
6:22
Because one of the candies contains
6:23
a simple remote-triggered vibrating motor while the other contains a small intercom.
6:28
So we lead off with the buzzing,
6:30
and then once we've got their attention,
6:31
we substitute for their misguided conscience.
6:34
Stop stealing all the candy from the little kids.
6:37
This next one's more in the realm of psychological
6:39
warfare because we hide this ultrasonic
6:41
speaker near these witches
6:42
and then play some whisper sounds while the candy thief waits at the door.
6:46
Now with the normal speaker, you would still hear noise on the other side
6:49
of a perfectly soundproof
6:50
barrier because the wavelengths
6:52
we can hear are on average 30 ft long, which means the sound can
6:55
diffract around the barrier.
6:57
But with an ultrasonic
6:58
speaker, the wavelengths are really, really short, which means they can't diffract around, which
7:03
makes them highly directional.
7:05
So the speaker's there.
7:07
I hardly hear anything right here,
7:09
but when I step to the left,
7:12
it's just like in my brain.
7:15
The camera here picks up on it a little bit,
7:19
but it's just something you have to experience
7:21
in real life to truly
7:25
This is so weird. Oh my god.
7:36
Now the penultimate contraption
7:37
is possibly my favorite cuz it sends the thief who steals all your neighbors'
7:41
candy on an emotional roller coaster.
7:43
Because if you attach two candy bowls to an axle, then link that via
7:46
chain drive to a 4-horsepower
7:48
fully integrated brushless motor, well then those two bowls will swap spots with each
7:51
other at 85 mph,
7:54
which means the thief gets real excited
7:56
as they approach a bowl of full-size Mr.
7:58
Beast candy bars only to find 80 milliseconds
8:01
later it's a bowl of full-size toothbrushes.
8:05
And our final contraption
8:06
is possibly the most intricate.
8:08
Because once a theft is detected,
8:10
the mailbox records a 10-second
8:12
clip, which gets sent a few doors down and merged into a pre-recorded video clip.
8:16
So when the thief comes to the door,
8:18
this is what they see.
8:20
Our newsroom has just obtained some exclusive
8:22
footage of more than one piece of candy being removed from a bowl that
8:26
is clearly labeled, please take one.
8:29
Take a look at this video.
8:30
Seems like a normal door approach.
8:32
Oh, there it is.
8:33
Wow, that is a clear violation
8:35
of the please take one sign.
8:38
And that's just a shame because every kid who now comes to the door
8:41
won't have any candy left for them.
8:43
If you're seeing this right now and you have any information
8:45
about who these culprits might be,
8:47
feel free to contact
8:48
our tip line here at the
8:50
And while they stare in shock,
8:51
you give them an opportunity
8:52
to wash down their newfound glory
8:54
with a handful of broccoli florets.
8:57
Now was all this overkill
8:58
just for some kids taking a little extra Halloween
9:04
Next, we put up a random assortment of those 10 different contraptions
9:07
on 35 porches all across America
9:10
and then set up a command center where we could monitor all the candy
9:13
bowls in real time,
9:14
which meant all we had to do now
9:16
was wait for it to get dark.
9:18
And while we do that, I should quickly mention if you love a good
9:21
harmless prank as much as Jimmy and I,
9:25
then this is a magic coin bank.
9:27
But when you try and figure it out by sliding the lid forward,
9:29
you'll find it has built-in
9:31
spider protection, which grandmas love.
9:35
And this is a tripwire
9:36
you can place anywhere around your house to protect your stuff.
9:40
Or heck, even in your stuff.
9:43
And those are just two examples
9:44
of the build-it-yourself toys that come in a monthly CrunchLabs Build Box subscription.
9:48
In fact, the number one rule is they just have to be really fun,
9:50
so you don't even realize all the incredible
9:52
engineering you're learning every month as you put it together
9:55
and I teach you all the juicy physics that make them work.
9:59
So, if you want to have a ton of fun while learning to think
10:01
and prank like an engineer,
10:03
visit crunchlabs.com to learn more.
10:05
And as the sunlight
10:06
continued to decrease, the eager trick-or-treaters
10:09
began to increase, which meant we now just had to wait for the punk
10:13
kids or terrible parents
10:15
to steal some candy,
10:16
and we didn't have to wait long. Please take one.
10:42
Guess who's not taking one.
10:47
Things started off strong
10:50
with the car horn spinning bowl combo.
11:05
And there was plenty more where that came from
11:07
for anyone else taking more than their fair share.
11:13
But don't go sleeping
11:14
on the silly MR. BEAST BAR.
11:46
IN FACT, SOMETIMES JUST THE MERE PRESENCE
11:47
OF THE silly string can
11:49
is enough of a gentle reminder to share.
11:55
Now, these kids raided the candy bowl next door,
11:59
which means 9 out of 10 dentists
12:03
we perform the toothbrush bowl swap Is that it?
12:36
I'm going to try to take one quickly. It's still toothbrushes. Oh my god. Oh my god.
13:06
This kid cleared the candy bowl at the previous house, so he earned
13:09
a BOXFUL OF STOP STEALING ALL THE CANDY FROM THE LITTLE KIDS.
13:29
THIS IS YOUR CONSCIENCE, BY THE WAY.
13:32
SHE WAS REAL stoked with our candy
13:36
but less stoked with our audio
13:43
And after taking more than their share next door,
13:47
these two minions didn't even make it to the porch.
14:13
The mirror hand illusion
14:14
also did not Mulch. Nope. Mulch man. There it is. Hi kids.
14:43
I'm the Mulch Man.
14:47
Notice the scarecrow kick
14:48
to confirm that he was in fact all alone.
15:07
What are you doing?
15:10
You didn't take more than you should, were you? You scared me.
15:13
How much candy did you take?
15:15
I'll put some back.
15:15
I I actually give you some OF MY OWN. YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT. Put it back. One more handful.
15:21
One hand Okay, that is very cool.
15:23
ALL RIGHT, NOW GET OUT OF HERE.
15:25
THE MULCH MAN'S ALWAYS WATCHING.
15:27
That scared the out of me.
15:38
HEY, ONLY TAKE ONE.
15:42
ONLY TAKE ONE CANDY. I SAW THAT.
15:45
BUT THE MULCH Man also knows it's not happiness
15:47
that brings us gratitude,
15:48
it's gratitude that brings us happiness.
15:51
THANK YOU FOR TAKING JUST ONE. Thank you.
15:59
This girl almost walked away accident
16:03
until she considered that the only thing better than one full-size
16:06
candy bar was two full-size candy bars.
16:32
Go back and replace your candy. All your candy.
16:39
Now, show us your best Fortnite dance.
16:42
And finally, if these kids weren't so focused on taking more than their fair
16:46
share, they might have noticed this oddly placed mailbox.
16:56
Take a look at this video.
16:57
Seems like a normal door approach.
16:59
Okay, they're checking out the selection.
17:03
Nope, there it is.
17:04
Wow, that is a clear violation
17:06
of the please take one sign.
17:18
In my ongoing quest to be the favorite
17:22
I've tried quite a few things OVER THE
17:30
BUT NOW I FINALLY DISCOVERED
17:31
A MUCH easier way so you too can be the favorite uncle or aunt
17:35
or even parent by simply gifting a young person in your life a crunchlabs.com
17:39
build box subscription FOR THE HOLIDAYS.
17:42
SO, IT GETS DELIVERED right to their doorstep,
17:44
and then we build a really fun toy together.
17:46
It's basically like unlocking your own personal Mark Rober video every month where you
17:50
learn a new engineering principle that will have you not just building like an
17:53
engineer, but more importantly,
17:55
thinking like an So, you're developing resilience
17:58
and problem-solving skills, which means someday
18:01
your build ideas could be protecting the neighborhood candy supply.
18:05
Not only that, but each month your box has a chance to contain the
18:07
platinum ticket, and if you get it,
18:12
well, then you're coming out to Crunch Labs to build with me and my
18:14
team for a day.
18:15
So, if you want to grow your brain in really
18:17
fun ways with me,
18:19
just head to crunchlabs.com
18:20
or use the link in the video description
18:22
where we're giving away 2 months free
18:24
as a holiday special. Thanks for watching.
