0:00 Welcome to my American home where you are invited to learn real daily life
0:06 English about your morning routine
0:09 while I show you my morning routine.
0:12 Come on.
0:12 First things first, we have to turn on the oven.
0:16 I have turned on the oven already so that my pan can preheat.
0:21 It has to get warm before I put the eggs on
0:24 or else the eggs are going to stick.
0:25 Nobody likes that.
0:27 So now that the pan is slightly warm, a little bit preheated,
0:31 I'm going to pour in some olive oil.
0:36 And we're going to make some scrambled eggs this morning.
0:39 This is something that I make quite often.
0:42 Usually I'm making it for five people, not just me,
0:46 so this is a treat.
0:47 I'm only going to crack two eggs today.
0:50 These are eggs from my chickens
0:52 and the fun thing is depending on the color of the egg,
0:55 sometimes I know which chicken laid the egg.
0:58 Now this egg, I'm not sure because it's just a brown color,
1:02 but this egg is a light green color and I know who laid it.
1:07 All right, let's crack the eggs into the pan.
1:10 I'm going to use my spatula a bit to get everything,
1:15 the oil kind of evenly on the bottom of the pan.
1:20 Sometimes one way that I test to see
1:22 if the pan is hot enough is just kind of move the oil.
1:26 If it slides smoothly, then we're ready.
1:30 All right, I'm going to crack my eggs.
1:35 And let's get one more.
1:41 I'm going to scramble these, so I don't really care if the yolks break,
1:45 but I did it perfectly.
1:47 They didn't break anyway.
1:48 Hooray!
1:50 All right, I'm going to scramble these and while I do a quick scramble,
1:55 I'm going to do part two of my morning routine,
1:58 which is my favorite part.
2:02 Just a moment.
2:03 All right, let's set these for just a minute.
2:07 It is tea.
2:10 I'm always excited to drink tea in the morning.
2:12 There's already some water in this electric tea kettle,
2:15 so I'm just going to push start, let that go,
2:19 and I am going to put some bread in our toaster
2:25 so that I can have bread with my eggs.
2:27 This is something that I really like to have together,
2:30 especially with a little jam.
2:32 The little bit of sweetness with the bread is great with eggs.
2:37 I love it.
2:38 So I'm going to put this in the toaster.
2:42 This bread is really big.
2:46 I don't think I need that whole thing this morning,
2:48 so I'm just going to break it in half.
2:51 Put it in the toaster and wait for it to toast.
2:58 Do you know what this is called?
3:00 This is a bread tie.
3:02 It's pretty cool because you can use
3:04 that word tie in a lot of different ways.
3:06 This is a bread tie,
3:09 but I often wear my hair in a hair tie.
3:14 Same idea, you are pulling it back.
3:17 Pulling it back.
3:19 While we're letting these eggs scramble, I'm going to put some seasoning in here,
3:25 some salt, just a pinch of salt.
3:30 My kids really like to do this for me.
3:33 They love to crack the eggs and put the seasoning in,
3:36 but sometimes with salt they put too much in,
3:39 so we have to be a little bit careful.
3:41 Some garlic powder.
3:44 This is kind of a cheat, right?
3:46 And now I'm going to grate some cheese.
3:50 This is a giant block of cheddar cheese.
3:55 And I don't always add this,
3:56 but I think it adds just another level of flavor
4:00 and I like to add it
4:01 while it's still in the pan.
4:04 So I'm grating the cheese.
4:06 Notice that when I say this word grating, there's a T in it,
4:11 but we're going to make it sound like a D, grading.
4:15 Grading the cheese because in American English,
4:18 we love for T's surrounded by vowels to sound like a D sound.
4:24 All right, I'm going to let this just sit here for a moment.
4:28 Some people like scrambled eggs to be very runny, but I don't.
4:33 I like them when they're a little more cooked.
4:38 All right, so we have the salt, we have the cheese,
4:41 the toast is going, I hear the water is boiling.
4:45 I'm going to get my plate ready.
4:48 My fork ready.
4:50 And I want to tell you that if you are new here, welcome.
4:54 I am Vanessa from speakenglishwithvanessa.com
4:58 and I have been teaching real life English here on my YouTube channel for
5:03 over the past 10 years
5:05 and now there are more than 7 million of you.
5:07 I can't believe it. 7 million of you watching me in real daily life
5:13 situations.
5:14 Every single week for my free YouTube lessons,
5:17 I create a free PDF worksheet for you.
5:21 This worksheet today, here you can see it.
5:24 It includes all of the vocabulary that has appeared on the screen here,
5:29 real daily life vocabulary, and also it includes two bonuses.
5:34 There is a vocabulary quiz, test yourself,
5:37 see if you can really use these yourself,
5:40 and there is a listening version of today's lesson.
5:44 This is like a uh a little podcast episode.
5:48 You can practice listening to real life English,
5:51 see if you can understand fast English, and you can download it.
5:55 So you can use these two bonuses in the free PDF worksheet.
5:59 All you have to do is click on the link in the description,
6:02 enter your name and email address.
6:05 I'm going to put this on my plate.
6:09 Enter your name and email address and voila, just like that,
6:13 the free PDF worksheet plus the two bonuses will land in your email inbox.
6:18 This is my gift to you.
6:21 All right, I just heard our toast pop.
6:23 That is the lovely word
6:24 that we use when the toast comes out of the toaster.
6:27 The toast pops.
6:29 Has it popped yet?
6:30 Yes, it has popped.
6:33 All right, I am going to now scrape all the little bits
6:38 and pieces off of the bottom of the pan
6:41 so that they don't burn.
6:43 Push this to the side.
6:46 And now it is time.
6:48 Our tea is done, too.
6:50 Hooray!
6:51 Now it is time to put some butter and jam on the bread.
6:56 I forgot a butter knife, so I'm going to grab that.
7:01 I'm back.
7:02 This is called a butter knife.
7:04 Can you guess why?
7:05 Because we use it to put butter on,
7:08 but you can use it for other things as well.
7:09 It just means a knife that's not sharp.
7:13 So this is the kind of knife
7:15 that I would put at the table
7:16 if we needed to cut something soft during dinner.
7:23 Um or I use it to spread things like this.
7:26 I'm spreading the butter.
7:29 You can see here.
7:30 I'm spreading the butter on and now I'm going to spread the jam on.
7:35 This has been one of my family's favorite jams recently, wild blueberry jam.
7:40 Oh, it's so good.
7:41 It's a little bit tart and sweet at the same time.
7:47 I usually like to get jams that aren't just pure sugar.
7:52 Fruit is already so sweet.
7:54 Um so I I like to have jam that actually tastes like fruit,
8:01 not just sugar, right?
8:03 All right, we have the jam on the toast,
8:05 we have the eggs that are ready,
8:07 and now it is time for my favorite part, tea.
8:14 So I'm going to put my tea bag in my mug.
8:19 This is my favorite mug.
8:20 I use it every day.
8:21 It says best mom ever and it has ginkgo leaves on it.
8:24 I love it.
8:25 My kids gave this to me for uh Mother's Day many years ago.
8:30 And it has not broken yet.
8:31 I'm so glad.
8:33 Someday when it breaks,
8:34 because I know it will someday due to the nature of using something every
8:39 day that's breakable with kids,
8:41 uh I will put something growing in it.
8:44 I'll put some soil
8:45 and some flowers will grow out of it
8:47 or some herbs,
8:48 something.
8:49 I will still use this even when it breaks someday.
8:52 All right, so we have our very hot boiling water.
8:54 I'm going to pour the water from the tea kettle into the mug.
9:02 I sometimes use loose leaf tea,
9:05 but usually I use loose leaf tea just for green tea in the afternoons.
9:12 For black tea, for everyday use, I just use tea bags.
9:18 They don't belong in this container,
9:20 but my friend from England gave me this container full of tea uh I
9:26 don't know,
9:27 15 years ago, and I have continued to use this container
9:31 because I think it's
9:32 so pretty.
9:33 So I just put my tea bags into this.
9:36 I feel like it's the simple things, right?
9:39 Enjoying opening the container, putting your tea bag into the mug that you love,
9:44 uh pouring the egg, cracking the eggs into the pan and not breaking them.
9:49 It's the small things in life, right?
9:51 All right, I'm going to let this steep for for few minutes
9:56 and while after I let it steep,
9:59 I'm going to pour some milk into the tea.
10:04 Maybe you make tea in a different way.
10:06 This is how I make tea.
10:07 Not saying it's the correct way, but while we're waiting,
10:11 normally I would sit at the table, but while we're waiting,
10:13 I'm going to try my eggs.
10:15 Take my hair off of it.
10:17 Ooh.
10:20 And see how they are.
10:25 Mhm.
10:25 Light, fluffy, slightly garlicky.
10:28 Now, you might be thinking, "Vanessa, why would you put garlic powder with jam?"
10:32 Don't ask.
10:33 Just try it.
10:35 So, sometimes what my family likes to do is we like to put the
10:38 eggs on the toast,
10:40 and then kind of like a sandwich, eat it like this.
10:51 Mhm.
10:51 Mhm.
10:51 So good.
10:53 Every time that I have jam with eggs,
10:57 I just feel like this is the perfect combo.
10:59 Sometimes Usually it's my husband who makes breakfast for our family,
11:02 and sometimes he puts just butter on the toast, and I think,
11:06 "Why wouldn't you put jam?"
11:08 So, usually I put jam on it, too,
11:09 because jam is the perfect touch for eggs, I think.
11:12 Don't put it on the eggs.
11:13 Put it on your toast.
11:15 All right.
11:16 We're going to see how this is doing.
11:19 Ooh, it's very hot.
11:22 Pretty good.
11:24 I like to leave it in there a little bit longer just to get
11:26 it slightly stronger.
11:28 We often use the word strong to talk about drinks.
11:30 Strong coffee, strong alcohol, strong tea.
11:34 Uh you wouldn't really use it for water or juice or milk,
11:39 but these types of things that can have a gradation of strength.
11:44 Weak tea, nobody wants to have weak tea.
11:46 Nobody wants to have weak coffee.
11:48 Everyone wants strong tea, right?
11:50 Strong coffee.
11:52 Um I do not put sugar in my tea on a regular basis.
11:57 I just like it pure with milk.
12:01 If I have chai, so a more seasoned spiced tea,
12:06 I do like to put a little bit of honey in it,
12:08 but on a regular basis, I just have it with milk.
12:12 And this is the morning routine.
12:16 All right.
12:16 I'm going to pause for a moment, let this steep,
12:19 and I'll get back to you and show you pouring in the milk.
12:22 Actually, while we're waiting for my tea to steep,
12:24 I want to tell you about a couple other morning routine breakfast drink type
12:29 of words.
12:30 Um I made scrambled eggs.
12:32 I just mixed them together,
12:34 but there are a couple other types of popular ways to make eggs.
12:38 You could make fried eggs.
12:40 Some people call this eggs over easy.
12:43 Some people call this eggs sunny side up.
12:46 And it's where you don't mix them.
12:48 Or you could make an omelet.
12:49 I liked making omelets when I was in high school.
12:51 I made a beautiful big omelet every single day where I uh mixed the
12:58 eggs before putting them in the pan,
13:00 and then I put a lot of toppings, and then I folded it over.
13:03 I put different types of uh maybe ham or turkey or spinach, sometimes broccoli,
13:10 cheese, and then folded it over and ate that.
13:13 Man, let me tell you what, that is the breakfast of champions,
13:17 as they say.
13:17 I had great energy, great uh nutrients ready for high school.
13:25 That was a long time ago.
13:26 Um also, I want to tell you about bread.
13:31 So, this is just bread.
13:32 It's baked, you know.
13:34 It's This is sourdough bread.
13:37 But when you put it in the toaster, what does it become?
13:40 It becomes toast.
13:42 So, this is not toast, but this is toast because it is crispy.
13:50 It has been in the toaster for a bit.
13:51 It's not burnt.
13:53 It's just toasted.
13:55 So, we can use the word toasted to talk about other things as well.
13:58 You might put some uh something in the oven like some almonds.
14:05 You could toast almonds.
14:07 You can toast bread.
14:08 You could toast other things, I guess.
14:10 Um and this pan, I wanted to talk about this pan for a moment.
14:14 It's pretty hot, so I'm not going to pick it up for you.
14:17 Actually, I will.
14:18 I will sacrifice.
14:20 I'll use this to This is a little hand towel
14:23 so that I can not burn myself.
14:26 Um this pan is called a skillet,
14:29 but you can also call it a frying pan.
14:32 Um you might call it a specific word like a cast iron skillet,
14:36 something like that.
14:37 Mine has eggs all stuck to the bottom,
14:39 but what I'm going to do is I'll pour some water in here
14:42 and soak it,
14:44 and the eggs will just come right off.
14:46 I'll do that later once it cools down a bit.
14:49 And this guy, I mentioned this word earlier.
14:52 This is a spatula.
14:54 Make sure that the middle of this word has a nice ch sound.
14:58 Spat-ch-ula.
15:00 Spatula.
15:01 This is a spatula.
15:03 Um you might call it something else.
15:06 If I can think of any other words, I'll put them up here,
15:09 but I call this a spatula.
15:10 Um I would only use this for flipping things.
15:13 When I make pancakes, I use this.
15:15 When I make eggs, I use this.
15:18 When I'm Yeah, usually just for eggs in the morning.
15:22 This is our egg spatula.
15:24 Um in the US, usually we keep our eggs in the fridge,
15:30 but because we have chickens, we don't have to refrigerate our eggs,
15:34 and that's the word that I would use, refrigerate our eggs.
15:38 They don't need to be refrigerated.
15:42 Notice at the end of this word, too, the T becomes a D.
15:45 Refrigerated.
15:47 These do not need to be refrigerated
15:49 because they came right from the chickens outside.
15:53 Um but when you buy eggs in the US,
15:56 you will find them in the refrigerated section,
15:59 and you have to keep them in your fridge.
16:03 Okay, I think my tea is probably ready.
16:06 I'm going to take out my tea bag, and pour in some milk.
16:16 It's a nice dark, rich brown color.
16:19 And I'm going to pour in a little bit of milk.
16:23 I love watching it plumes of milk coming up.
16:28 And I will stir it a bit.
16:31 I might put a little dash of milk in.
16:36 A little bit more.
16:38 All right, this is piping hot right now.
16:42 I cannot drink it.
16:42 I'm going to need for it to cool down a bit,
16:44 but I will take my tea, take my breakfast,
16:49 and go sit at the table, eat this in some peace and quiet.
16:54 I hope you have a wonderful morning routine.
16:57 I hope that these words are helpful to you,
17:00 and don't forget to download the free PDF worksheet for this morning routine daily
17:06 life vocabulary lesson.
17:08 In the PDF worksheet,
17:10 don't forget you will find the vocabulary quiz to test you to see
17:14 if you can really use these words yourself,
17:17 and you will find the listening version of this lesson.
17:21 That way you can see if you can understand fast natural conversations.
17:26 This is a great test.
17:27 So, all you have to do is click on the link in the description,
17:30 enter your name and email address, and voila, just like that,
17:34 you will get this free PDF worksheet and bonuses in your email inbox.
17:39 My gift to you.
