2:12 Before you can actually have a conversation about technology in English,
2:16 you need to know some vocabulary, right?
2:19 So, we're going to start with some common positive phrases
2:23 that we use to talk about technology.
2:25 Can you guess what the next part's going to be?
2:27 Yeah, some negative expressions to talk about some of the negative impact of technology.
2:34 But, let's start with the positive.
2:36 To pick up the phone or to pick up your phone.
2:39 I love that I can just pick up the phone
2:42 and call my sister even
2:44 though she lives far away.
2:45 This is positive, right?
2:47 In moderation.
2:49 Using social media is fine in moderation, but too much can be distracting.
2:55 I love this phrase in moderation
2:57 because it works for
2:58 so many things in life.
3:00 You can treat yourself and eat some chocolate every day.
3:04 But, if you ate piles of chocolate every day, it's no good, right?
3:08 So, if you eat chocolate in moderation, it's no problem.
3:12 Same with social media.
3:14 Just use it in moderation, not too much.
3:17 I can't imagine life without.
3:20 I can't imagine life without a map app on my phone.
3:25 Before this existed, I got lost all the time.
3:28 I can't imagine life without using Google Maps or Apple Maps all the time.
3:34 You might also hear this referred to as GPS.
3:37 This is a global positioning system.
3:41 >> >> This is more the official term, but a lot of people use this.
3:44 I use GPS all the time.
3:47 I can't imagine my life without a GPS on my phone.
3:51 A game changer.
3:53 Video calling has been a game changer for my family,
3:57 especially when I lived abroad.
3:59 You know what this feels like.
4:01 You feel isolated and alone.
4:04 Often times it is really hard to move to another country or another city,
4:08 even far away from your family.
4:11 So, video calling can be a game changer.
4:14 This can change everything.
4:17 It's not that your life is a game.
4:19 >> >> But we use this to talk about something that makes a big impact.
4:23 Wow, video calling is a game changer for helping my time abroad be a
4:28 more positive experience.
4:30 At my fingertips.
4:32 With a smartphone, a lot of information is at my fingertips.
4:38 This means that it is readily accessible.
4:42 For a smartphone, it is literally at your fingertips,
4:45 but we can use this not exactly as literally as this.
4:49 You could use it about food and say, "In a modern world,
4:53 we have all the food that we need at our fingertips."
4:57 And the fact that there are people in the world who do not have
5:00 enough food is tragic.
5:03 There is plenty of food to go around,
5:05 so why don't some people have it at their fingertips and some people do?
5:10 This is really sad.
5:11 But for a lot of people, we have a lot available at our fingertips.
5:17 To stay on top of things.
5:19 We're not talking about a physical spot on top of things.
5:22 Instead, take a look at this.
5:24 I use my phone's calendars to help me stay on top of things at
5:29 work.
5:30 I have a lot going on
5:31 and looking at everything on a digital calendar really helps me to stay organized,
5:37 not be late for things, to know what's going on.
5:42 Or instead of using all those phrases, we can compile them into this one.
5:45 The calendars help me to stay on top of things at work.
5:50 Great.
5:51 It opened up a whole new world.
5:53 I love this phrase especially when we think about learning English.
5:56 Take a look at this.
5:58 Virtual learning opened up a whole new world for me.
6:03 Instead of going to physical classes in your city or an hour away,
6:08 instead you just open up YouTube
6:11 and here's Vanessa teaching you English right from the comfort of your own home.
6:16 So, we could say virtual learning opened up a whole new world for me.
6:21 To Google something.
6:22 This is interesting because we're using a brand name as a verb.
6:26 I say this all the time.
6:28 When I don't know something, I Google it.
6:31 If you don't know something, try Googling it.
6:35 >> >> We could say try looking it up,
6:37 but for some reason we have just swapped that to say Google.
6:42 You should Google it.
6:43 All right, now let's talk about some negative expressions
6:46 that we can use to talk about technology.
6:49 Back in the day.
6:51 Back in the day, there was no social media,
6:54 so people connected more in real life.
6:57 This is a positive thing, right?
6:58 We should connect more in real life, not in social media.
7:02 Back in the day refers to a general time
7:04 that feels far in the past before there was social media,
7:09 before there was the internet.
7:10 We just had to open the door
7:12 and go talk to our friends
7:13 and neighbors.
7:14 When I was your age When I was your age,
7:18 the only computers in the school were in the computer lab room.
7:23 This is true for me.
7:25 When I was in high school from 2000 to 2001 2 3 4 5
7:32 around then,
7:33 there were no computers in each of the classrooms.
7:35 Instead, the only computers were in a computer lab.
7:39 And I'm sure many of you went to school when there were no computers.
7:42 So, this is something
7:43 that we often use to talk about the difference in our childhoods.
7:47 When I was your age,
7:49 when you're talking to someone younger who knows nothing about what it was like
7:52 before technology.
7:54 When I was your age, there were no computers in my school.
7:58 Kids these days.
8:01 When I was your age, kids played outside all the time,
8:05 but kids these days just stay inside playing video games.
8:10 We always use this expression
8:12 when we are talking about something negative
8:15 that kids do nowadays.
8:17 Kids these days, there's a lot of judgement in that voice.
8:20 Kids these days just stay inside playing video games.
8:23 They have no idea what it's like to just go outside and play,
8:27 be bored, have fun in that way, create your own fun.
8:30 Kids these days.
8:32 >> >> Addicted or addicted to something.
8:37 I feel like I'm addicted to my phone.
8:41 Or, he realized he was addicted and needed a break from social media.
8:46 This is the same as a drug addiction, an alcohol addiction.
8:51 It is a very strong, very serious,
8:54 and it's something that hasn't been studied very much because it's relatively new.
8:58 It has been studied a bit.
9:00 We are starting to become wiser about our phones
9:03 and realize it's easy to become addicted to our phones.
9:07 Sooner or later, everyone will have to use AI sooner or later.
9:14 This phrase sooner or later has kind of a reluctance feeling about it.
9:18 Like, I don't want to have to use AI, but I have no choice,
9:22 and I think that's the way the world's going.
9:25 Sooner or later, we're going to have to use AI,
9:28 so maybe I should start learning about it.
9:31 Sooner or later, everyone will have to.
9:33 What do you think?
9:35 There's a time and place.
9:38 There's a time and place to use your phone,
9:40 and the dinner table with your family is not that time.
9:46 This might be a phrase
9:47 that a parent says to a child
9:49 if the child or the teenager,
9:51 whoever it is, is looking at their phone at the dinner table.
9:54 You can say, "Well, there's a time and place to use your phone,
9:58 but it's not here."
9:59 You're acknowledging this is a useful device, but not here.
10:03 There's a time and place.
10:05 Maybe it's while you're while you're contacting your friends, doing other things,
10:09 but not here at the dinner table.
10:11 I wouldn't be surprised
10:13 if I wouldn't be surprised
10:16 if the next generation is a lot different than previous generations due to their
10:22 tech use.
10:23 A lot of people who are in their 20s
10:26 and below grew up with a level of technology
10:30 that the rest of us never had
10:32 when we were kids.
10:33 So, I wouldn't be surprised
10:35 if they are remarkably different than the rest of us due to technology.
10:40 Information overload.
10:43 Social media can cause you to have information overload
10:48 because there is something new going on all the time.
10:52 This is a problem, right?
10:54 If you need to give yourself a break from information overload, close your phone,
10:59 close your computer, go step outside.
11:01 And our final negative expression about tech is I catch myself.
11:06 Ugh, I catch myself looking at my phone more than I should.
11:11 Sometimes I tell myself, "It's just to see what time it is.
11:15 It's just to see if my sister messaged me back."
11:18 But I catch myself, ugh, I shouldn't pick up my phone so much.
11:22 Ugh, but it's hard, right?
11:24 I catch myself looking at my phone more than I should.
11:27 All right, now that you have heard all of those positive
11:31 and negative expressions about technology,
11:34 we're going to take a look at a sample conversation between my husband
11:38 and I.
11:38 We're going to use a lot of these phrases.
11:41 Listen carefully because after this,
11:43 you're going to have a chance to speak with me about technology.
11:47 You can use these phrases yourself.
11:49 So, listen carefully to our sample conversation.

11:54 Thanks for texting me back right away about meeting up.
11:57 Don't you just love how easy communication is with technology?
12:01 Definitely.
12:02 Back in the day, we'd have to wait hours to hear back from someone.
12:05 I know.
12:06 Kids these days will never have that experience.
12:09 Yeah, everything's online now.
12:11 We have news, messages, and work right at our fingertips.
12:15 >> I know, but don't you find it hard sometimes to use your phone
12:19 in moderation?
12:21 Definitely.
12:22 I'm learning the importance of turning off my phone at certain times of the
12:25 day.
12:26 There's a time and place for everything.
12:28 I agree.
12:28 I'm trying to learn that, too.

12:39 that we are having a chit-chat at a cafe,
12:42 and we are talking about technology.

12:54 so you better participate.
12:56 Speak out loud.
12:57 Use your best English.
12:59 And I want you to speak out loud in the pause
13:01 as if we're having a conversation.
