One of the most exciting AI apps for developers in 2026 is Claude.
0:04
No, not that Claude, but Claudebot,
0:06
a free and open- source project that's not just another lame chatbot,
0:10
but a tool that takes action in the real world 24 hours a day,
0:14
7 days per week without smoke breaks.
0:16
And it does this
0:17
while remembering everything and will hit you up on Telegram
0:19
or WhatsApp as it automates your entire life.
0:22
Over the last few weeks, everybody's been going crazy over it.
0:24
It's racked up over 65,000 GitHub stars in record time
0:28
and caused Mac Mini sales to go through the roof,
0:30
selling out everywhere.
0:31
In today's video, we'll take a hands-on look at everything it can do.
0:34
But its popularity has already created some problems.
0:37
Earlier this week, Anthropic,
0:39
a company that believes open- source AI is too dangerous for the common man,
0:43
woke up and chose violence.
0:44
Claudebot sounded too similar to their beloved Claude,
0:47
so they threatened to break the developers knees with a lead pipe
0:50
if they don't change the name.
0:51
So now Claudebot is officially called Maltbot.
0:53
Actually, no.
0:54
Wait a minute.
0:55
Maltbot.
0:55
That name sucks.
0:56
Today, they changed the name once again to its final form, OpenClaw.
1:00
The same dangerous AI assistant with a new lobster identity.
1:03
It is January 30th, 2026.
1:06
And you're watching the code report.
1:08
OpenClaw was created by Peter Steinberger, the founder of the developer tools company PSDFKit,
1:13
aka Nutrient.
1:14
But just look at this dude's unhinged GitHub profile.
1:17
It's less of a resume
1:18
and more of a heat map of pure uninterrupted software obsession.
1:22
What's crazy is that this guy retired
1:24
and then came back for an encore by giving us Moltbot for free,
1:27
a tool written in Typescript
1:28
that wraps Claude and GPT5 to stay alive 24/7.
1:32
It can manage your calendar, clean up your email, run scripts,
1:35
find out how much money you're losing in the stock market
1:37
and deploy broken code with absolute confidence.
1:40
And best of all,
1:40
it can do all of this from your own tiny self-hosted VPS,
1:44
a Raspberry Pi, or even a Mac Mini
1:46
if you really want to overdo it.
1:47
There's no reason to pay another random startup $29 per month for the privilege.
1:51
But to understand its full power, let's put it to work right now.
1:55
The first step is to install it,
1:56
which can be done with a single command on any system,
1:58
although Linux would be the preferred route.
2:01
Once installed, you'll have access to the clawbot
2:03
or moltbot command or the open claw command
2:06
if you live in the present.
2:07
And the first thing you'll want to do is go through onboarding.
2:09
It is going to request
2:10
that you read the security doc about all the risks involved,
2:13
but I like to live dangerously.
2:15
So, let's move right on to the next step by hooking up an AI
2:17
model provider.
2:18
You can use anything you want here,
2:20
but I'm going to go ahead and drop in my Anthropic API key.
2:23
The Anthropic API does cost money,
2:25
but you could easily use a free open- source model here as well.
2:28
Now that that's done,
2:29
the second major component is hooking up some kind of messenger app like Telegram,
2:33
Slack, WhatsApp, Discord, etc.
2:35
I'm going to go with Telegram, which is really easy to set up.
2:38
Just open up your Telegram Messenger and start a chat with the bot father.
2:41
It'll have you select a name for your bot
2:43
and then eventually give you an access token,
2:45
which is like a password that you want to keep safe.
2:47
Go ahead and give the token to Moltbot.
2:49
Then the next thing it'll ask you for is to configure some skills.
2:52
It has a bunch of built-in skills or you can bring your own.
2:54
And there's even a thing called MoltHub with a bunch of other pre-built skills
2:58
depending on what you want this thing to do.
3:00
And then finally, it'll ask you about hooks.
3:02
Hooks allow you to tap into different life cycle events
3:04
that happen as this tool runs,
3:06
which is really useful
3:07
if you want it to keep memories about things
3:08
that happen in previous sessions
3:10
or trigger follow-up automations
3:12
when something important happens.
3:13
That takes care of the initial setup,
3:15
which then brings up this gateway dashboard where you can manage everything.
3:18
It has an interface for basic chat along with tons of config settings to
3:22
customize basically everything.
3:23
That's cool and all, but our goal is to use Mulbot through Telegram.
3:26
And to do that,
3:27
we need to go into Telegram
3:28
and send a message to the bot we created with the bot father earlier.
3:32
You'll notice initially it says access not configured.
3:35
And we'll respond with this pairing code.
3:37
What we have to do is take that pairing code, go into the terminal,
3:40
and run this command.
3:41
And now we're good to go.
3:42
Now we can start sending messages
3:43
and it will respond with Anthropics Claude
3:46
as the backend AI model.
3:47
And now we can start refining its personality by simply chatting with it.
3:51
I'll go ahead and name it assistant to Jeff
3:53
and tell it to behave like a casual gremlin with the fire emoji.
3:56
But what's really awesome is
3:57
that we can now start building automations directly in the chat.
4:00
Like maybe I want to check
4:01
and see how my investment in Microsoft is doing.
4:04
We can ask Moltbot through Telegram
4:05
and it turns out it's not doing
4:06
so well.
4:07
But it's not just going to pull this data once.
4:09
We now have an automation set up in the background to keep track of
4:12
this stock.
4:12
And when it moves significantly, we'll get a message on Telegram.
4:15
So now there's no need in my life to go check this stock manually.
4:19
But unfortunately, because I lost so much money in Microsoft,
4:21
I now need to get a real job.
4:23
So I might go ahead
4:24
and install this skill
4:25
that will automatically generate interview questions for software engineers.
4:28
But that's just the tip of the iceberg of what's possible here.
4:31
It's an amazing tool you'll definitely want to try out.
4:33
Kind of like Tracer, the sponsor of today's video.
4:36
The Tracer is an agent orchestration layer
4:38
that makes your coding agents a lot better at building real world software.
4:42
You start by telling it what you want to build
4:43
and Tracer's new epic mode will ask you follow-up questions to create a series
4:47
of specs and tickets.
4:49
It just like real engineering teams when they plan an epic.
4:51
Then it passes all of
4:52
that context to your favorite coding agent
4:54
and tracks the progress of each ticket in your sidebar.
4:57
The tracer uses a smart orchestration system called Bart Simpson
5:01
that tracks what's actually happening under the hood
5:03
and corrects agents the moment they drift. instead of just blindly spamming more loops.
5:07
If you want to get more out of your coding agents in 2026,
5:10
try out Tracer's new epic mode for free with the link below.

This has been the Code Report.
