What is A1 (Beginner)?

At A1 you can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases. You can introduce yourself, ask and answer simple questions about personal details (where you live, people you know, things you have), and interact simply when the other person speaks slowly and clearly.

A1 on IELTS, TOEFL & Cambridge

A1 sits below the main IELTS band scale (roughly under 3.0) and below TOEFL iBT reporting. There's no adult Cambridge exam at A1 (it's covered by Young Learners tests). See the full CEFR comparison table or the official Council of Europe descriptors.

How to shadow at A1

Pick very short, slowly-spoken clips with clear captions — greetings, numbers, simple introductions. Shadow one short line at a time and replay it until it feels comfortable; don't worry about understanding every word. Pick subjects you enjoy from shadowing topics or a channel; when it feels easy, move up to A2.
