Summary

Shadow TED, TEDx and TED-Ed talks to build clear, confident English. These talks feature articulate speakers, structured arguments and vivid vocabulary — ideal material for imitating natural rhythm, stress and intonation.

Why TED Talks are great for shadowing

TED speakers are trained to speak clearly and persuasively, which makes their talks some of the best material for the shadowing technique. The pace is deliberate, the pronunciation is crisp, and each talk is built around a single idea — so you get rich, meaningful English without the fast, mumbled speech of casual conversation.

Lengths range from 3-minute TED-Ed lessons to 18-minute keynotes, so you can match the video to your level and attention span. TED-Ed animations are a gentle entry point; TEDx and main-stage TED talks push you toward advanced vocabulary and idiomatic phrasing.

How to shadow a TED Talk

  1. Listen once to the section to grasp the idea.
  2. Shadow sentence by sentence — play a line, then repeat it immediately, copying the speaker's rhythm and stress, not just the words.
  3. Record and compare. TryShadowing scores your pronunciation so you can see exactly where you drift.
  4. Repeat the hard lines until they feel automatic — focus on linking, weak forms and sentence stress.

Tips

  • Start with talks that have word-level (karaoke) subtitles so you can follow each word as it's spoken.
  • Aim for clear, connected speech and a matching rhythm rather than a "perfect" accent.
  • Shadow the same talk across several days; fluency comes from repetition, not from always finding new material.

Pick a talk above and start speaking — every line is a rep for your ears and your mouth.
