China has their own version of everything.
0:02
No YouTube, they have Billy Billy. No iMessage.
0:04
Instead, they have WeChat.
0:05
So, what else does that apply to?
0:07
What about all the fast food joints that we know and love?
0:09
Is it the same story?
0:10
So, today I'm in China trying every Chinese fast food chain that I can.
0:14
And we're going to be comparing the ones back home to the ones that they have here.
0:17
And on top of that, going to Chineseonly
0:19
fast food chains that you can only find here to find out which one is the best.
0:24
But surprisingly, we're starting things off at KFC in Chongqing, China.
0:28
I didn't think they'd have it to be honest with you, but it turns
0:30
out it is the most popular fast food place in all of China.
0:33
Tasting with me today is Jackson,
0:35
a Chongqing native and tour guide who's taking me through China's most popular
0:39
fast food chains nationwide.
0:41
So, we're here to set a baseline to see how it differs from KFC in America.
0:44
And after this spot, we'll be hopping to McDonald's for the same thing.
0:47
This box contains wings,
0:49
nuggets, which look a lot like McDonald's nuggets, and then the classic fried chicken.
0:53
Maybe we start with the wings.
0:54
>> We call it the New Orleans style. >> It's cooked nicely. It's tender.
0:58
Flavor is not bad.
0:59
It's a little sweet.
1:00
I'm jumping onto the nugget.
1:02
Honestly, I kind of like this, but it's a little dry. >> It's like paper.
1:05
McDonald's had it >> That's true.
1:06
On to the KFC fried chicken.
1:08
I will say this looks concerning.
1:10
KFC to me is really not great in America, but is it better in
1:16
>> I don't know if it's just me, but it tastes totally different.
1:18
The seasoning is way more intense.
1:20
Way saltier, way more umami. Chicken's fattier.
1:23
Overall, the flavor is actually surprisingly
1:25
better, but it is dry and it's honestly missing a lot of the breading,
1:29
which is crucial for fried chicken to me. We're not done.
1:31
We have to try the Chinese exclusive items to make our final determination.
1:35
Now, we have a Beijing
1:36
style fried chicken wrap.
1:38
It looks boring from the outside, I'll be honest, but when I opened it up
1:40
and I saw what was going on in here with the pickles and everything
1:43
else, I knew it was going to be good.
1:44
I'm going to fold it and bite it from the middle cuz that's where all the sauce is.
1:46
Excuse the way I ate this, but uh cheers.
1:50
So, it's actually extremely
1:51
similar to how the peeking duck is actually wrapped.
1:53
They have the picking duck sauce, salty, and they have the cucumber, crispy and crunchy.
1:58
The flavor of this is actually phenomenal.
2:00
I would love if they served this in America.
2:02
That pecking duck sauce, a little bit sweet, a little bit spicy.
2:04
There's also a creamy sauce in there, too.
2:06
I don't know what that is.
2:07
And the crunch from those cucumbers, and it adds a little freshness.
2:10
It's so funny cuz it's literally just a tortilla and chicken tender, but like
2:12
because of the sauce and the cucumber, it becomes something different entirely.
2:16
That's kicking them up a notch.
2:17
We got one more thing. Portuguese egg tarts.
2:20
I have no notes on that. That's great.
2:22
It's not too sweet. Great flavor.
2:24
Super super silky egg tart texture.
2:26
And then the crust is like this nice crunchy almost puff pastry. It's nice.
2:30
Is it the best egg tart I've ever had? No.
2:32
Is it a quality one?
2:33
Actually, surprisingly pretty good.
2:34
We're rating things on a scale of 1 to 10.
2:36
10 being an absolute greatest thing I've ever eaten in my life, period.
2:39
And a one being I need psychiatric help afterwards.
2:41
And the way that we're going to be judging that is value, speed, and flavor.
2:44
Those are all the things that matter with fast food, right?
2:46
It took a very long time to get this.
2:48
15 minutes, so not very fast.
2:50
Price-wise, it was actually shockingly cheap.
2:52
Like $19 for all this food, and there's a few things we didn't even show. Values there.
2:55
Flavor-wise, there were some hits, there were some misses.
2:57
I think it's deserving of a 6.8.
3:00
6.8 is a fair judgment.
3:01
But this is just the beginning.
3:02
It only gets crazier from here.
3:04
Moving on, we have the world's largest fast food chain under Asia's largest LED screen. It's McDonald's.
3:10
And they have a lot more options here.
3:12
How does the world's largest
3:14
fast food chain in China compared to the McDonald's in America?
3:17
Judging by the looks of this sandwich, I'm going to say pretty
3:20
different cuz the fry on the chicken looks good.
3:21
The breading looks amazing. Let's taste it. Watch out. Watch out. Is that good?
3:29
>> Emotionally, this is my 10 out of 10.
3:31
When I travel to other remote regions in China, I'm not used to their
3:34
local food because every region is so distinctly different.
3:38
McDonald's, that's my safe paradise. >> It's surprisingly good. It really is.
3:41
First thing I noticed is there's some spiciness to it.
3:43
And it's actually spicy, but not like crazy.
3:45
I don't think that they would ever do that in America cuz they're afraid
3:47
of scaring away audience.
3:49
But I love that there's actual heat in this for once. It's crispy.
3:52
It's a little chewy and stringy, but the flavor in and of itself is nice.
3:56
The chicken's seasoned well.
3:57
It doesn't taste of dirty oil and it's decently spiced.
4:00
We have other things to taste though.
4:01
We got just the standard fries.
4:04
It's the classic McDonald's way.
4:05
They taste the same everywhere on Earth, but they don't have the same options
4:09
of fries everywhere on Earth.
4:10
We have the crispy fries, which are another version.
4:13
They actually are so crispy. >> Crunchy.
4:16
Yeah, I love it.
4:16
>> Texture is really important to me on French fries.
4:18
The seasoning is better.
4:19
The crunch is better.
4:20
McDonald's, if you're watching, you should be launching this in America.
4:22
It would do so well.
4:23
Why can't you guys have nice things?
4:24
Now, we have the Angus
4:26
Max burger served incredibly
4:28
preciously in this box.
4:30
Almost like a little gift wrap hamburger.
4:32
Also, the Mayard on this is absolutely bonkers.
4:34
It's seared properly, but the question is, is the beef any good?
4:39
It's kind of flavorless.
4:40
>> It's a little bit plain.
4:42
>> The bacon is so much of the primary flavor of this that it almost
4:45
kind of tastes like OG McDonald's breakfast when I was a kid.
4:47
From an American's palette, it doesn't taste like a hamburger to me.
4:50
It doesn't taste bad.
4:51
This one isn't my favorite item, but we have more.
4:52
The final item, you have the taro pie.
4:55
This was the one thing I always love from McDonald's was the fried pies.
4:58
>> Well, I'm glad that you were able to experience your childhood again.
5:00
>> It's a beautiful thing. Cheers. >> Oh, yeah.
5:03
The texture of this is absolutely perfect.
5:05
The crunch, it melts in your mouth.
5:07
It's so tender, but the flavor is kind of a little bit lacking for me.
5:10
You guys really like to keep your desserts not too sweet.
5:12
>> I think American standard of sugar is like a next level to us.
5:15
The texture is a 10 out of 10. Unbelievable crunch.
5:19
We had a lot of different things.
5:20
It's time to rate.
5:21
It took about 10 minutes to get all of our food, but we had a huge order.
5:24
I think it would have taken half the amount of time if it wasn't as big.
5:27
Overall though, it is a bit long for fast food.
5:29
That said, let's talk about value.
5:31
We spent this much.
5:32
A little bit expensive for China, especially fast food.
5:34
Yeah, >> I would say some of the items were mind-blowing
5:36
and some of them were kind of so so they also had a matcha
5:39
avocado that we had off camera that was insane.
5:42
For a McDonald's, I think I'm going to give it a seven.
5:44
I don't know that I've ever given McDonald's anything above like a two.
5:47
>> I think I'm going to give it a very solid seven as well.
5:49
That's just my go-to comfort food, especially the crispy chicken sandwich.
5:53
That's just my all-time favorite.
5:54
>> And so McDonald's joins the leaderboard,
5:56
but we have a long road ahead of us on our journey to find the
5:59
best fast food in China.
6:01
On to the next.
6:02
Next up, Jackson is taking us to a mom and pop noodle chain called
6:05
Juuen to show us what fast food was like before the big chains arrived
6:09
and honestly what it is still for many people across China to this day.
6:13
We're on to what arguably gave birth to modern
6:16
Chinese fast food outside of American brands.
6:18
Would you agree with that? >> Yeah, pretty much.
6:20
Because uh the Chongqing
6:21
small noodles, it went nationwide
6:23
since 10 years ago.
6:24
The small doesn't mean it's like small by its size, but its simplicity and efficiency.
6:30
One of their specialty is the tajang.
6:32
They add ground pork and chili oil and blend it with the noodle giving
6:36
that extra soft and meaty texture.
6:39
And I'm gonna get myself a
6:41
regular ones like vegetarian one.
6:43
So you could try out the difference.
6:44
What about spice level?
6:45
Just >> Tell her I know that I'm white, but I can handle it.
6:52
>> You give your order to the chef and they go to work.
6:55
She boiled every noodle to order.
6:56
And 4 minutes later, they were placed into a prepared bowl containing a wide assortment of ingredients.
7:00
Pickled vegetables, green onions, chili oil, and a fat scoop of lard.
7:04
Honestly, everything was already set up like an assembly line, very similar to fast food.
7:08
Another chef layered on pork, and a little broth, and we were ready to taste.
7:11
Total cost for two bowls.
7:13
You see the size of this in USD?
7:15
$3.51 for both combined.
7:18
>> Less than 5 minutes.
7:19
That is the very OG definition of fast food for the Chinese That ising delicious.
7:26
>> About 20 years ago, when I was in grade two, this was my staple
7:30
dish, hopping on a school bus.
7:31
When I was really, really late, the auntie can usually get it done really fast as well.
7:36
I would tell her, you know, my bus is right there.
7:37
And then she's like, "Oh, >> yeah."
7:39
She would sometimes like prioritize it, you know?
7:41
>> No, it's very nice of you.
7:42
>> And at the time, it was only 5.
7:44
That's like a little bit like.7.
7:46
I can't believe that you're getting high quality
7:48
restaurant level flavor for like a little under $2. It's absurd.
7:52
There's so much flavor in this for something that was made in 4 minutes.
7:55
The noodles are cooked perfectly.
7:56
They've got a nice springiness to it, a nice chew.
7:58
I love the Sichuan,
7:59
the little bit of numbing spice that's in there, and the flavor of pork
8:02
is just like boom.
8:03
It's so meaty and porky and delicious and flavorful. Wow. I can't stop.
8:07
>> Yeah, this is an addicting level of noodle and spice.
8:09
I can't believe it.
8:10
The value is beyond perfection.
8:11
It's It's god level. Flavor. Unbelievable. It's delicious. It's good. It's hearty.
8:16
Took less than 5 minutes, 4 minutes, and 30 seconds.
8:18
We've waited in drive-throughs for 15 minutes before.
8:20
Man, I I think I'm going to have to give it a nine.
8:22
I don't know if anything can beat this. >> Thank you.
8:24
You make me proud.
8:25
I think I'll give it a 9.1.
8:27
This was my >> Julian
8:28
takes a commanding lead.
8:30
This is going to be very hard to beat.
8:32
But a heavyhitting chinaborn
8:34
burger chain is next.
8:35
So, we're at the first franchise
8:37
nationwide Chinese fast food place, Taste Team or Tasing.
8:41
Apparently, they are the inventor of Chinese style burger.
8:45
What they do is they make Chinese
8:47
style handmade buns and they add black sesame to make a difference rather than
8:51
the usual white sesame burgers or sandwiches that we usually see in the West.
8:55
So, we went in and placed our order, got a couple items and ended
8:58
up waiting a little too long.
8:59
11 minutes for fast food.
9:00
A little bit long, but if it's good, it may be acceptable.
9:03
This is their new Shinjzhan
9:04
style chili pepper with chicken patty that's coated with
9:08
>> The bun itself is interesting.
9:10
I don't know how to describe it.
9:10
It almost feels like powo in a way.
9:12
It's like stretchy, chewy, airrated. It looks nice.
9:15
>> The bun is a handmade bun mixed with the key flavors of China.
9:19
Sour, sweet, salt, bitter, and spicy. Very unique.
9:23
Never seen this before. Flavor-wise, totally unique.
9:26
The sweetness actually makes sense here because it has more spice and more just
9:29
like richness from the chilies on top.
9:31
It doesn't taste like artificial flavoring.
9:33
I'm tasting the chilies.
9:34
I'm tasting the creamy mayo.
9:35
I do think it's missing a little bit of salt if I wanted to
9:37
be really anal about it, but like other than that, it's a good sandwich.
9:40
You could serve this at a restaurant.
9:41
People would probably be happy.
9:42
>> This is better than I expected.
9:44
The crunchiness with that crispy rice is killing it.
9:47
And the spicy level.
9:48
It looks kind of intimidating, but it's actually pretty okay >> just cuz we have it.
9:51
And I'm surprised that they sell it.
9:53
They sell chicken wings.
9:53
So, I'm going to try one.
9:55
Crispy fried properly chickeny. Missing salt though.
9:58
Let's break this down.
9:59
Speed is very, very low.
10:00
A noodle shop putting out traditional noodles was way faster than this.
10:03
So, for a combo meal, drink side and the sandwich, $2.50.
10:08
So, value in comparison to what we would pay for in America is actually quite good.
10:11
But in comparison to the noodles, the value isn't as good.
10:13
I think I'll give it a very strong
10:15
seven, which for me is a high rating >> out of all the Chinese burgers.
10:18
I'd give it a 6.8
10:20
because my personal favorite is still McDonald's
10:22
chicken burger, but that is only sold in China.
10:25
>> Still a good rating, but it's not our best one, and we have many more to try.
10:27
So, let's move on.
10:28
Next up, Domino's Pizza.
10:30
This is a big deal here.
10:31
They have China exclusive menu items that we've never seen before.
10:35
Domino's in America, I've never been a huge fan of it.
10:37
Actually, I'm not a huge fan of it.
10:39
But Domino's in China is extremely different.
10:41
In fact, they have a huge menu, like ridiculously big.
10:44
Durian >> We're from a different universe.
10:46
>> They have steak and lamb chops and salmon.
10:49
Look at all these sides.
10:50
Meatballs, golden shrimp, pork jowl, onion rings.
10:54
You can get a volcano
10:55
pizza with a yakator
10:56
skewer and a side of potatoes with two milkshakes.
10:58
But we only got two of them.
10:59
We got the beef Wellington. What the hell?
11:04
And then we got this, which is what we're starting with.
11:06
The shrimp and pineapple pizza.
11:08
If you thought pineapple didn't belong on pizza, how about fried shrimp, boiled shrimp, mayo? I'm scared. That is horrendous. >> It's very different.
11:16
>> I'm so confused right now.
11:17
You have a pizza crust that's the same as usual.
11:20
The sauce is a sweet, creamy
11:22
pineapple custard with cheese melted on top.
11:25
I'll be honest, it doesn't taste as bad as I thought.
11:28
It is so far away from what I was expecting.
11:30
Like, my brain is
11:31
>> To put it in English, I don't know if it's actually pizza.
11:34
>> That made me speak Chinese.
11:36
I think we're going to have to jump to the Wellington cuz I don't know
11:38
how I feel about that.
11:38
This one looks a bit more savory. This looks different.
11:40
Maybe more in the direction of what we're looking for.
11:42
Let's give it a shot.
11:44
>> Wow, it's actually good.
11:46
>> Comparatively, it is better. I'm surprised.
11:48
There's real puff pastry on it, which is cool.
11:50
There's real bacon underneath it.
11:51
Like whole lardons of smoky, streaky bacon, which adds good flavor.
11:54
It's a bit unusual.
11:55
It has like a almost a French onion soup flavor, which I guess is
11:58
supposed to be the mushroom ductel like in a classic Wellington.
12:01
Surprisingly, this was the most expensive item we've gotten by far.
12:05
It was close to the same price as it is in America.
12:07
It doesn't taste that much better, but it is more different and more exciting.
12:11
It also took 20 minutes.
12:12
And I'll give it a six.
12:13
>> I'll give it a seven.
12:14
I don't think I'll try it again, but I just appreciate the creativity
12:17
of Asian culinary culture.
12:18
>> Now, I don't even know what to expect anymore.
12:20
Let's go on to the next.
12:21
Next up, another China exclusive chain trying to battle it out with one of the global giants.
12:25
We are at Do, a KFC
12:27
competitor from the early 2000s.
12:29
They exist mostly in transportation
12:31
hubs, specifically railway stations.
12:33
They have fried chicken, burgers, and French fries.
12:35
I'm going for the fries
12:37
>> The fries are not bad, although they should be crispier,
12:40
but they taste good, though.
12:41
So, normally they have a western style
12:43
fried chicken sandwich, but this particular one is their new seasonal
12:48
signature, which the bun is entirely made of rice.
12:51
The crispy rice on the surface and the second half is a slightly more soft, chewy rice.
12:57
>> It's not crispy at all.
12:59
>> It tastes really good though.
13:00
>> The beef is insanely good.
13:02
The rice isn't cooked perfectly, but it's cooked kind of nicely for a fast food place.
13:06
I would have expected it to be total mush.
13:07
It has some chew to it.
13:08
The American cheese in there goes well with it.
13:10
What I'm surprised about is the flavor of the beef.
13:12
Almost has like a Burger King beefy flavor, but like better.
13:15
There's got to be MSG in it.
13:16
It almost tastes like fast food patties used to taste like 10 or 15 years ago.
13:19
In a good way.
13:20
Okay, now for the leg quarter.
13:22
I call this a leg quarter, but what do you call it?
13:24
>> They call it the pistol chicken quarter.
13:26
The good old pistol shape.
13:27
This has got to be American's favorite.
13:31
If I compare this to KFC in America, crispiness
13:34
way better, but I don't think it's seasoned as well.
13:36
This is like kind of sweet.
13:37
I kind of want more saltiness.
13:39
I would say it's still better than KFC in America.
13:41
>> Yeah, it's at least juicy enough.
13:43
>> I prefer this over the burger slightly.
13:45
It took 13 minutes at the end of the day, so convenience is like at the floor.
13:48
For all this, we spent almost $9,
13:50
so it's one of the most expensive.
13:52
It took the longest, and I definitely would not say it's the best.
13:55
I think I'm going to give it like a 6.5 for me.
13:57
>> I'll get a 6.5 as well.
13:58
Still a higher rating than I've given KFC in the US. Moving on.
14:02
I know we're only doing fast food, but we had to make a quick
14:04
stop here for an iconic place in China.
14:07
It's a direct competitor with a major one in America. Lucken Coffee.
14:11
We have Luck and Coffee on this side, but then directly
14:14
across is a Starbucks.
14:15
The funny thing is, I've seen this happen maybe two or three times since arriving in Chongqing.
14:19
It's almost like every time Starbucks
14:21
lays down a new shop, Lucken steps in to go, "You know what?
14:23
We're going to battle it out.
14:24
>> We're going to snipe you right in your >> Maybe. Yes.
14:27
From a business sense, they have all the same things that Starbucks has, but
14:30
they also have unique items that Starbucks does not have, like this.
14:33
This is one of their iconic orange Americano.
14:36
So, it's got orange juice and an Americano resting on top.
14:38
You have two options.
14:39
You can either mix it and drink it, or you can drink the orange
14:41
on the bottom and then the espresso on the top.
14:43
>> One is regular, one is carbonated.
14:45
>> I'll take the nitro.
14:46
You want to take this one?
14:47
So, I'm going to mix mine cuz I like espresso.
14:49
This was meant to be
14:51
>> It's actually prettying good.
14:54
This is a little bit light, you know, compared to the usual four shots
14:57
that you're >> The orange juice overpowers
14:59
the espresso in a way that you kind of can't really taste it.
15:01
And the coffee becomes more of a rounding out chocolatey aftertaste.
15:04
That's 25% of the flavor.
15:05
I want to taste the coffee.
15:06
Whatever orange juice they're using tastes great.
15:08
I think Lucken is a little bit better.
15:10
I give it a 7.5. It's good.
15:12
I would get it >> I think I'll give it a 7.5
15:14
as well, especially for a hot summer day.
15:16
That a little bit carbonated water would be so
15:19
>> This is a delicious little coffee cocktail. Good job, Lucken.
15:21
On to the next.
15:22
Lucken really outclassed Starbucks with a unique concept earning one of the top places on our leaderboard.
15:27
But can another spot take its place?
15:29
And who will be our first place leader?
15:30
>> This is called Yang Guaufu Malatang.
15:33
>> So this is the biggest hot pot chain.
15:35
It is the closest thing to a fast food hot pot.
15:37
Normally when you do hot pot, you have a big boiling cauldron in front of you.
15:40
It takes quite a long time to eat cuz you're cooking everything one by one by one.
15:43
This you pick out all the ingredients you want ahead of time.
15:46
They take it and they cook it for you.
15:47
This took 5 minutes and we're done.
15:49
We're ready to eat.
15:50
hot pot essentially, but the fast food version.
15:53
Let's just jump straight into it.
15:54
This whole bowl was around $8,
15:57
which I think in comparison to everything that we've gotten here in China, it's
16:00
one of the most expensive,
16:01
but it is quite a bit of food, though.
16:02
This is enough to feed, I would say, two to three people. Would you agree?
16:06
>> Twice as much as what we got at the noodle shop per person.
16:08
And I would argue it's actually slightly less food.
16:11
So, value is not quite there in terms of like quantity, speed, >> 5 minutes.
16:15
>> So, it's more expensive. It's not slow.
16:18
Flavor-wise though, I actually think this is really good.
16:20
>> It's a right amount of numbing spice.
16:22
>> I cannot tell the difference between the flavor of this and the flavor of
16:25
most hot pot places.
16:26
Now, I can tell that the inquality of the meat is less, but the
16:29
flavor of the overall dish, I cannot tell the difference.
16:32
This just made hot pot more convenient.
16:34
Get it done within 5 minutes.
16:36
I think that's a good enough trade-off to get slightly lesser quality of the
16:40
meat, but you get the convenience and efficiency
16:42
of having the almost
16:44
identical taste and flavor. It tastes great.
16:46
It's seasoned perfectly with salt.
16:47
It's got the umami.
16:48
It's got the numbing spice that I want.
16:50
I mean, I'm gonna give it like an 8.8.
16:52
>> That is a fair judgment.
16:53
Yeah, I would probably give it 8.5
16:55
just because it has lower meat quality.
16:57
>> Another solid and innovative entry in our fast food journey.
17:01
But we move on.
17:02
We are at Wallace,
17:04
which is another KFC
17:05
competitor, but this one's unique.
17:06
It's a little bit more budget friendly, and there's a unique story to it.
17:09
>> Public food safety incident
17:11
that resulted explosive diarrheas
17:13
right after you eat it in a few hours.
17:15
Chinese people on the internet actually call it the platoon.
17:18
The Nintendo game's objective
17:20
is to occupy other people's like surface areas
17:23
by splashing your paint.
17:26
And the Wallace is you splashing
17:28
some other stuff with your butt.
17:31
>> Do we want to eat here?
17:32
Did they resolve this issue?
17:33
It's all about franchise controls.
17:35
It was a yes or no question.
17:37
I guess we'll have to try.
17:40
So, we entered, we ordered, and to our surprise, we had the fastest
17:44
spot of the day at 30 seconds.
17:46
That's like McDonald's level speed.
17:47
>> I hope we don't have explosive diarrhea in 30 seconds. >> Why?
17:51
So, here we go.
17:52
Price point a little more expensive, actually, surprisingly.
17:55
Yeah, this was 125 each.
17:56
But compared to American standards, that's still ridiculously cheap.
17:59
I think you couldn't get a fried chicken sandwich in America for less than
18:02
5 to eight bucks.
18:03
So, we have our sandwich.
18:04
They gave us this sort of like spicy seasoning.
18:06
We're going to try it without that first, and then we'll try it with it. So, cheers. It's juicy.
18:11
Not as much crunch as some of the other ones.
18:13
This bun kind of tastes like a McDonald's bun.
18:15
It's a little spicy.
18:16
It's kind of lacking flavor for me a little bit.
18:18
There's not a lot going on.
18:19
>> I think it's a little vanilla.
18:20
>> Maybe we should try this secret spice. Tell me when.
18:23
>> Oh, bring it on, baby.
18:26
>> 100% better with this.
18:27
This just proves my point.
18:28
Seasoning is so important.
18:30
Imagine if they just seasoned it properly with this.
18:32
>> I guess they just want to make it more accommodating
18:34
to people who are not into spice.
18:36
So you can control like how much amount of spice you add in. >> That's fair.
18:40
I like to force people into it to be honest.
18:41
I'm like this is what's good.
18:42
You're going to enjoy it.
18:44
Sometimes accommodating is not always the best idea.
18:46
I'm going to give it a >> I'm just going to give it a five because
18:48
this is really just the average vanilla
18:50
type of burger in China.
18:52
>> Despite being cheap and fast, Wallace
18:53
takes the bottom spot on our leaderboard is deserving. We move on.
18:57
We're in the longest standing foreign pizza chain in all of China.
19:01
It is Pizza Hut and quite literally the nicest Pizza Hut I think I
19:05
have ever seen in my life. It's ridiculous.
19:06
I mean, they have like a reservationist
19:08
and nice chairs and tables and it's a legit restaurant.
19:12
It also happens to have the worst steak I've ever seen.
19:14
We ordered two things.
19:15
The Grand Slam with a hot dog crust.
19:18
And I saw Wagu steak and I thought, "What?"
19:20
And so I ordered it.
19:21
We were wondering, "How is this steak $12?" I see why.
19:24
We're going to move to the pizza.
19:26
I don't need to say anything about this. That's enough.
19:28
If you've ever had a frozen baked pizza, that's kind of what you're getting here.
19:31
It's really not as bad as I thought it would be.
19:33
I would say it's on par with American Pizza Hut.
19:35
There's so many types of wiener on this, it's crazy.
19:37
And this wiener tastes like pineapple.
19:39
Whereas this wiener, it's just a hot
19:41
>> Yeah, I'm just going to give it a six.
19:43
At the time when I was remembering it, it was one of the few western fancy restaurant.
19:48
Easily 8.5, but maybe nothing has changed.
19:51
Maybe we changed, so now it's a six.
19:54
Let me cut to the chase here.
19:55
All things considered, I'm going to give this a solid 5.9.
19:58
I know there's better out here, and we're going to find it.
20:00
For some reason, I was expecting more from this fine diningesque
20:03
Pizza Hut, but I was wrong.
20:05
There's so much good food in China for a low price.
20:07
I'm confused why anyone would find themselves here.
20:09
But can our next spot, which is the biggest chain in the world, give us something better. >> We're at Mishu.
20:13
They have more than 45,000 stores globally.
20:16
>> This is a fast food ice cream place.
20:18
>> One ice cream is like 2.
20:20
>> It's a good deal and fast.
20:21
You order it, they give it to you, you get the out.
20:24
>> They are super upfront about the material they use. Just powdered milk.
20:27
>> I'm not going to lie, it's not very good.
20:29
They're not over complicating it.
20:30
>> Yeah, considering it's less than 30 cents US,
20:33
there's really nothing else I can ask for.
20:36
>> You know, my first taste of it was, man, for ice cream, there's not
20:39
a lot going on in this.
20:40
But the more I taste it, it actually kind of is growing on me
20:43
cuz most ice cream that I'm used to should be intensely flavored.
20:45
If it's vanilla, it should taste intensely of vanilla, and it should be sweetened
20:48
properly with a bit of saltiness.
20:50
This is so light tasting and almost like more of like a frozen milk
20:53
with a light vanilla and a light sweetness.
20:55
And the more I taste it, the more I realize, you know, I actually
20:57
kind of like this variation
20:58
because it's just a gentle, light ice cream eating experience.
21:01
It reminds me a lot of the ice cream in Japan where it's just
21:04
kind of like milk and a little bit of sugar and that's it.
21:06
I'm not going to feel heavy after I eat this, which I appreciate.
21:08
Honestly, all things considered, I'm going to give it like a seven.
21:10
It's not the best ice cream I've ever had, but this would deliver over
21:13
and over and I would get it again.
21:14
Solid seven to me.
21:15
So, we're at Mr.
21:16
Rice, which is considered to be a Panda Express competitor.
21:19
It combines the homestyle
21:20
cooking with fast food efficiency.
21:22
And all the dishes are laid out just like a buffet.
21:25
You grab a plate and a spoon.
21:26
You grab whatever you want and you weigh out and you pay based on
21:30
the weights that you're getting.
21:31
And the rice is free and unlimited.
21:33
And the soup is also for free. >> That's insane.
21:36
You could easily go light on the ingredients that you pick up at the
21:39
buffet and then just go crazy on the rice and pay close to nothing, I bet.
21:42
So, let's see how it is.
21:43
I'm just going to go for it.
21:44
>> Paying is calculated based on weight.
21:46
So, drop out the extra oil.
21:48
Oh, I'm very interested in whatever is going on over there.
21:50
My god, this is amazing. Look at this.
21:52
It smells so good.
21:53
How am I supposed to pick?
21:54
There's so much good stuff.
21:55
Oh, this looks great, too. >> No extra oil. >> No extra oil. Learn your lesson. Thank you.
22:00
This is fast food in China.
22:02
In comparison to Panda Express, I'm already very excited.
22:04
I don't even know where to begin.
22:05
I got so many different things. Is this duck? Some green beans. Good. A little overcooked.
22:13
Okay, we got sort of a chicken and chili. That's the one. Salted perfectly.
22:17
The chili flavor is so fragrant, tender.
22:19
Then we have like this sort of glazed chicken. Oh, it's great.
22:23
>> Back in the days, like ancient China,
22:25
smoked meat was the only way that you can preserve meat.
22:27
Now it's a national dish that you usually eat during Chinese New Year. >> That's incredible. It's so smoky.
22:33
It's making me feel a little bit back home in Texas.
22:35
Rice test is important.
22:36
They're mass manufacturing rice here.
22:38
So, a little overcooked,
22:40
but not too bad.
22:40
>> This is the perfect healthy food for a lot of white collar office workers.
22:44
There are not many places you're going to go to that are considered fast
22:47
food where you have fresh vegetables,
22:49
different cuts of meat.
22:50
The fact that this fits the category.
22:51
We got all this fresh for $5 for this massive plate of food, it's pretty amazing.
22:56
Like I would come back here if I was in a rush.
22:57
>> I think I'd get an 8.8.
22:59
It does have more of an emotional
23:00
value to me because this has brought Situan
23:03
style homemade stir-fried dishes
23:05
way more nationwide and going more mainstream
23:08
on the global >> The value is quite good, although relatively expensive.
23:12
when you look at Chinese food across China.
23:15
But the speed is instant.
23:16
As soon as you're ready to plate it and eat it, you're ready to go.
23:18
And then flavor is good.
23:20
Some of the things are kind of like a 6.5,
23:23
a seven, but some of them are like like the chicken is like an 8.5.
23:26
I would give this place an 8.3.
23:28
You pull up Mr.
23:29
Rice has got you covered. Mr.
23:30
Rice, I love you. Mr.
23:32
Rice proves to be a solid
23:34
final entry in our search for the greatest fast food experience in China.
23:37
With that score of 8.55,
23:39
our official winner is Juwen Noodle Shop.
23:43
I've tried hundreds of fast food items all over the United States, and it's
23:46
always about which one's better, this one or that one.
23:48
And I came here thinking I was going to do that, and I was wrong.
23:50
Ultimately, we had a simple bowl of noodles made in a mom and pop
23:53
shop, made correctly, and it was fast.
23:55
It was also not expensive.
23:56
In fact, it was one of the cheapest, and it was one of the best.
23:58
If that's not fast food, I don't know what is. So, love you. Subscribe. See you.
