BROOKS: I'm a classic striver.
0:02
I work really hard.
0:04
I want to put points on the board every single day.
0:07
You know what I'm bad at?
0:09
Leisure.
0:10
Now, I know what you're thinking.
0:11
Leisure is chilling on the beach.
0:12
And you're probably not very good at leisure, either, if you're watching this video.
0:16
You're watching content from HBR because you want an edge, man.
0:20
I completely get it.
0:21
But here's where we're wrong, fellow strivers.
0:23
Leisure is a serious business.
0:28
A very famous book written in the middle of the 20th century called Leisure,
0:32
the Basis of Culture, by Josef Pieper, German philosopher-- he was a great philosopher.
0:37
And he said that we need to be great at leisure.
0:41
By that, he meant that we need to be strivers at leisure, too.
0:45
And that meant not being lazy.
0:47
He talked about leisure
0:48
as being a serious thing in
0:50
which we're not compensated by the world,
0:51
but which enriches us and makes us better.
0:54
You don't need work-life balance.
0:55
You need work-life integration.
0:57
And the way to do that, to be better at your job,
0:59
is also to be better at your "not job."
1:02
The three parts of leisure
1:03
that make you truly excellent are all about learning things you don't have to
1:07
learn,
1:08
deepening your relationships for which nobody pays you, which is to say,
1:12
not on the clock, and becoming spiritually or philosophically deeper than you once were.
1:18
Those are the three areas of leisure
1:20
that you can dedicate yourself to to get better at
1:23
and watch your happiness
1:24
and your effectiveness and your productivity
1:26
and your creativity truly grow.
1:28
And those are great goals for any striver.
1:31
I know you plan out your work.
1:33
Every striver does.
1:34
Every minute is accounted for, right?
1:37
And the trouble is
1:38
that they don't like the time
1:40
when they're not working precisely
1:41
because it's so unstructured,
1:44
feels like it's frittered away.
1:46
I talk to people all the time who say, boy, at work,
1:48
I'm unbelievably productive.
1:49
But then I come home, and I'm exhausted.
1:51
And I just waste all my time-- zoom, zoom, zoom-- scrolling through social media.
1:56
And I feel bad about myself.
1:57
The answer to that is to take seriously your leisure time like you take
2:02
your work.
2:03
That means real assignments and real goals,
2:06
like having objectives that you're trying to focus on to be better than you
2:10
once were so that you're looking forward to get home not to do more
2:13
work and not to fritter away your time on social media,
2:16
but to read that book that you've always wanted to read.
2:19
I promise you that
2:19
if you set aside The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky-- you probably always wanted
2:25
to read it.
2:25
Everybody did.
2:26
It's so great.
2:28
It's a complete page-turner.
2:30
And you say, as soon as I get home from work,
2:32
I'm going to dig into that book.
2:34
That's something that has the dignity of every striver's work calendar.
2:41
And you can dedicate it to your leisure.
2:43
And you can love both.
2:46
You can go too far
2:48
and suck all the joy out of this
2:51
if you say to yourself,
2:52
I'm not going to sleep until I've read 35 pages of The Brothers Karamazov
2:57
by Dostoyevsky,
2:58
then pretty soon, you won't look forward to it anymore.
3:02
It has to be something that doesn't become a chore,
3:04
it doesn't become something that's a task that sucks the meaning out of life,
3:08
per se.
3:09
One of the ways
3:09
that you can test this is to see whether
3:12
or not you're truly getting enjoyment from something.
3:15
And if you are,
3:16
then you're going to want to be more structured about it.
3:18
You're going to want to do it in a serious way.
3:20
You're going to want to get after it.
3:21
You're going to want to schedule it.
3:23
But if it actually becomes something that you're not enjoying anymore,
3:27
then you know that you've actually gone too far.
3:29
That's how you figure it out, not too hard.
3:33
Can leisure be unproductive?
3:36
The answer, according to Josef Pieper, who wrote Leisure, the Basis of Culture,
3:40
is no because if you're doing something that's inherently generative and good, that's productive.
3:46
That doesn't mean it's work itself.
3:48
You don't have to turn your leisure into a job.
3:51
But it has to be something where you have personal growth.
3:54
Maybe that's total and complete relaxation.
3:58
Maybe that's going on a retreat, where you're sitting in meditation or in prayer,
4:03
or you're getting serious about deepening your relationship outside of the confines of any
4:08
of your work responsibilities.
4:09
But that's productive.
4:11
It's just a new way of seeing what productivity actually is.
