"Tell me about yourself" is one of the hardest questions to answer in a
0:05
job interview.
0:06
It's one of the hardest questions
0:07
because it's the first question you will have to answer
0:12
when you will probably be the most nervous.
0:15
If you want to give the perfect answer to the question "Tell me about
0:18
yourself",
0:19
make sure you watch this video.
0:22
And just very quickly,
0:24
tell me the name of the job role you are being interviewed for in
0:28
the comment section below the video
0:30
so I can give you some extra tips.
0:32
Okay.
0:33
Let's get started.
0:35
Please take notes.
0:36
Why do interviewers ask the question "Tell me about yourself"?
0:40
They ask this question right at the very start of a job interview to
0:44
assess three things.
0:45
Number one, communication.
0:48
The hiring manager wants to assess the candidate's communication skills
0:52
because if the candidate can't talk about themselves with confidence
0:56
and clarity,
0:57
they won't be able to communicate with their co-workers, customers, or clients.
1:02
Number two, they want to assess positivity.
1:06
That is why I strongly recommend the candidate gives a positive and uplifting answer.
1:12
And finally, they want to assess the candidate's suitability for the job role.
1:18
That is why it is very important the candidate quickly reads the job description
1:25
before their interview and they align their skills with those featured on
1:30
that document when answering the question "Tell me about yourself."
1:35
And what's the difference between "Tell me about yourself" and "Introduce yourself"?
1:40
There is no difference between the question "Tell me about yourself" and "Introduce yourself."
1:45
And the good news is the candidate can give the same answer for either
1:49
question.
1:51
Okay.
1:51
So, what's the biggest mistake candidates make
1:54
when answering the question "Tell me about yourself"?
1:57
The biggest mistake candidates make is they don't prepare an answer and practice it.
2:03
This then tells the hiring manager they don't have the communication skills
2:07
or the ability to prepare.
2:09
Every candidate knows the first question they will have to answer is,
2:13
"Tell me about yourself."
2:14
That is why you must prepare your answer
2:17
and practice it several times before your interview.
2:22
So, what is the best structure to use for answering "Tell me about yourself?"
2:26
There are two structures a candidate can choose from
2:30
when answering "Tell me about yourself."
2:32
The first one is the PPP structure: past, present,
2:38
and your plans for the future.
2:40
Tell the interviewer what you have been doing in the past in terms of
2:45
job roles,
2:46
education, and responsibilities.
2:49
Then tell them what you are doing right now in the present
2:52
and finish your answer with your plans for the future.
2:56
The second is my preferred structure.
2:59
This is called the SEAT structure, S E A T.
3:03
Start your answer by telling the interviewer the skills you have
3:08
that match the job description,
3:09
then talk about the experience you can bring to the company,
3:14
then go into details of any achievements you have attained in your life
3:18
so far,
3:19
and then finish your answer with the type of person you are
3:23
and what you will do in the role to have a positive impact.
3:27
And all candidates can easily remember my brilliant SEAT structure for "Tell me about
3:34
yourself" because they will be sitting down on a seat at their interview.
3:39
Okay, we now have the structure, but how long should a candidate's answer be?
3:44
The perfect length for a "Tell me about yourself" interview answer is 60 seconds.
3:51
That is all it needs to be.
3:53
What should candidates avoid saying in their response?
3:56
I recommend they avoid talking about the following things: hobbies or interests, family details,
4:04
relationship status, or any personal problems they are currently going through.
4:09
Don't talk about those things
4:11
because they have no impact on your ability to do the job properly.
4:16
So, should candidates memorize their answer word for word?
4:19
While it's perfectly acceptable to memorize your answer,
4:23
perhaps the best strategy to use is to remember the structure.
4:27
For example, if a candidate chooses my seat structure,
4:31
when the hiring manager says to them,
4:33
"Tell me about yourself." all they have to remember is seat: skills, experience, achievements,
4:39
and the type of person they are.
4:41
They can begin their answer by telling the interviewer the skills they have.
4:46
They can then give brief details of all the experience they have,
4:50
the achievements they have attained,
4:52
and then finish their answer with the type of person they are.
4:56
How can someone answer this question confidently if they have no experience?
5:01
If a candidate has no previous work experience,
5:04
they can still use my seat structure, but instead of talking about their experience,
5:10
talk about their education background.
5:13
So, therefore, the structure they would use would include skills, education, achievements,
5:20
and the type of person they are.
5:23
Can you give an example of a weak answer versus a strong answer?
5:27
Yes, absolutely.
5:28
To begin with, here is an example of a weak answer.
5:32
Don't say this.
5:34
Tell me about yourself.
5:36
Um yeah, sure.
5:37
So, my name is Richard.
5:39
I'm 54 years old.
5:41
I am hard working, friendly, supportive,
5:44
and I think I'm a great fit for this position.
5:47
So, you could see that answer was too short, it was not professional,
5:52
and it didn't really tell the interviewer anything about the candidate.
5:56
Let me now show you how to give a top-scoring seat structure answer to
6:01
the question,
6:02
"Tell me about yourself."
6:04
Welcome to your interview.
6:05
Please, tell me about yourself.
6:08
Thank you very much for giving me this opportunity.
6:11
My skills are a strong match for the job description.
6:15
I am organized, disciplined, I can work under pressure,
6:19
and I always put the needs of my team first.
6:22
My experience in problem-solving, completing time-sensitive tasks,
6:28
and delivering great customer service means I am ready-made for this role.
6:33
I have a track record of achievement.
6:35
In my last job, I won employee of the month,
6:39
and I was praised by my manager for my strong work ethic.
6:43
If you hire me,
6:45
I will be the type of employee who acts
6:47
as a positive role model for your company
6:50
and takes ownership of my professional development to ensure I always give you a
6:56
strong return on my salary.
6:58
And I look forward to sharing additional details in the interview regarding my suitability
7:04
for this position.
7:06
That was a brilliant answer,
7:08
and I made it easy for myself
7:10
because I mentioned the SEAT structure in my response:
7:14
skills, experience, achievements, and the type of person I am.
7:20
Finally, what can candidates say at the end of their answer to stand out
7:23
from everyone else?
7:25
The best thing to say at the end of your answer is simply this:
7:29
I will work hard to give you a great return on my salary,
7:33
and I look forward to sharing additional details in the interview regarding my suitability
7:40
for this position.
