They ask this question right at the very start of a job interview to

assess three things.

Number one, communication.

The hiring manager wants to assess the candidate's communication skills

because if the candidate can't talk about themselves with confidence

and clarity,

they won't be able to communicate with their co-workers, customers, or clients.

Number two, they want to assess positivity.

That is why I strongly recommend the candidate gives a positive and uplifting answer.

And finally, they want to assess the candidate's suitability for the job role.

That is why it is very important the candidate quickly reads the job description

before their interview and they align their skills with those featured on

that document when answering the question "Tell me about yourself."

And what's the difference between "Tell me about yourself" and "Introduce yourself"?

There is no difference between the question "Tell me about yourself" and "Introduce yourself."

And the good news is the candidate can give the same answer for either

question.

Okay.

So, what's the biggest mistake candidates make

when answering the question "Tell me about yourself"?

The biggest mistake candidates make is they don't prepare an answer and practice it.

This then tells the hiring manager they don't have the communication skills

or the ability to prepare.

Every candidate knows the first question they will have to answer is,

"Tell me about yourself."

That is why you must prepare your answer

and practice it several times before your interview.

So, what is the best structure to use for answering "Tell me about yourself?"

There are two structures a candidate can choose from

when answering "Tell me about yourself."

The first one is the PPP structure: past, present,

and your plans for the future.

Tell the interviewer what you have been doing in the past in terms of

job roles,

education, and responsibilities.

Then tell them what you are doing right now in the present

and finish your answer with your plans for the future.

The second is my preferred structure.

This is called the SEAT structure, S E A T.

Start your answer by telling the interviewer the skills you have

that match the job description,

then talk about the experience you can bring to the company,

then go into details of any achievements you have attained in your life

so far,

and then finish your answer with the type of person you are

and what you will do in the role to have a positive impact.

And all candidates can easily remember my brilliant SEAT structure for "Tell me about

yourself" because they will be sitting down on a seat at their interview.

Okay, we now have the structure, but how long should a candidate's answer be?

The perfect length for a "Tell me about yourself" interview answer is 60 seconds.

That is all it needs to be.

What should candidates avoid saying in their response?

I recommend they avoid talking about the following things: hobbies or interests, family details,

relationship status, or any personal problems they are currently going through.

Don't talk about those things

because they have no impact on your ability to do the job properly.

So, should candidates memorize their answer word for word?

While it's perfectly acceptable to memorize your answer,

perhaps the best strategy to use is to remember the structure.

For example, if a candidate chooses my seat structure,

when the hiring manager says to them,

"Tell me about yourself." all they have to remember is seat: skills, experience, achievements,

and the type of person they are.

They can begin their answer by telling the interviewer the skills they have.

They can then give brief details of all the experience they have,

the achievements they have attained,

and then finish their answer with the type of person they are.

How can someone answer this question confidently if they have no experience?

If a candidate has no previous work experience,

they can still use my seat structure, but instead of talking about their experience,

talk about their education background.

So, therefore, the structure they would use would include skills, education, achievements,

and the type of person they are.

Can you give an example of a weak answer versus a strong answer?

Yes, absolutely.

To begin with, here is an example of a weak answer.

Don't say this.

Tell me about yourself.

Um yeah, sure.

So, my name is Richard.

I'm 54 years old.

I am hard working, friendly, supportive,

and I think I'm a great fit for this position.

So, you could see that answer was too short, it was not professional,

and it didn't really tell the interviewer anything about the candidate.

Let me now show you how to give a top-scoring seat structure answer to

the question,

"Tell me about yourself."

Welcome to your interview.

Please, tell me about yourself.

Thank you very much for giving me this opportunity.

My skills are a strong match for the job description.

I am organized, disciplined, I can work under pressure,

and I always put the needs of my team first.

My experience in problem-solving, completing time-sensitive tasks,

and delivering great customer service means I am ready-made for this role.

I have a track record of achievement.

In my last job, I won employee of the month,
