hi I'm Michael this is lessons from the screenplay
0:04
this is going to be a weird episode
0:08
occasionally I make a video as a way of forcing myself to figure out
0:11
how I feel about a film or technique this
0:14
is exactly such a case I've
0:16
mentioned before that I am a huge Star Wars fan going
0:20
into the theater to see the last Jedi I was eager to find out
0:23
what the next chapter held for the heroes I had come to love and
0:26
the force awakens I walked
0:28
out of the theater partially
0:29
elated it had been a very long time since a big-budget tentpole
0:33
film had genuinely surprised
0:35
me but I also felt
0:36
unenthused the force awakens left me excited
0:40
for more Star Wars I had
0:41
to force myself to see the last Jedi a second time so
0:45
today I want to dissect two
0:46
of the character arcs and the film one
0:49
of which drags the film down with its design and the
0:52
other which builds to one of my favorite moments in any Star Wars film
0:55
and finally try to collect my thoughts about the merits of letting
0:59
the past die let's
1:01
take a look at the last gen
1:05
following the pattern established
1:07
in the force awakens
1:08
there are many parallels
1:09
between the last Jedi and the Empire Strikes Back the hero
1:13
travels alone to a remote location to
1:15
be trained in the ways of the force by
1:17
a Jedi Master who
1:18
was not exactly what they were expecting
1:20
because the protagonist is off and Jedi world the
1:23
other characters have to help keep the plot moving going on their own adventures
1:27
exploring unseen parts of the galaxy and
1:29
meeting new people but
1:31
while Han and Leia's journey is exciting and dramatic finn
1:35
and roses leave something to be desired part
1:38
of the reason is the lack of conflict
1:39
between them han and leia have personalities
1:42
that constantly clash yet
1:44
they are also developing
1:45
feelings for each other Finn
1:47
and Rose have differences when they meet but
1:49
afterward pretty much get along great but the
1:52
deeper reason the storyline
1:53
is flawed has to do with Finn's character
1:56
arc by the end of the last Jedi Finn
1:59
is willing to sacrifice his
2:01
life to save the resistance
2:05
but part of what makes the end of a character's arc of change compelling
2:09
is how it contrasts
2:11
with where they began
2:12
and it's not very clear where Finn begins I really
2:16
loved the notion that you know he's left the first order but
2:20
he hasn't really joined the resistance everything
2:22
he does in the force awakens even
2:24
like taking them to the Starkiller base it's
2:27
not to help their resistance it's to help pray he always acts out of
2:30
personal and not ideological
2:33
motivations I'm just here to get right while
2:36
true the fact that Finn hasn't already joined the resistance is
2:40
not clearly reestablished in the last Jedi
2:43
at least not in the final cut in a deleted scene however Finn
2:48
does explain that I believe
2:50
in what you guys are doing here but I didn't join this army I
2:52
don't want you to think I'm something I'm not and it's
2:55
fine you alright you here with us where
2:57
you belong without this scene the film is relying on the audience to remember
3:02
Finn's hesitancy to join the resistance from
3:04
the previous film and if
3:06
joining the resistance is the decision he's supposed to be struggling
3:09
with it's odd that early in the story he decides to risk his life
3:13
for the resistance to
3:15
return to one of my favorite quotes from Robert McKee's story true
3:19
character is revealed and
3:20
a choices a human being makes under pressure the
3:23
greater the pressure the deeper the revelation
3:25
the truer the choice to the characters
3:27
essential nature Finn does try to run at first but
3:31
in the next scene he's pitching a dangerous plan to save the resistance
3:34
to Poe besides this first escape attempt
3:37
Finn never makes another choice that demonstrates
3:40
his ambivalence towards staying with the resistance
3:42
instead his doubt is expressed by listening
3:45
to people share their thoughts he
3:47
gets a monologue from Rose there's
3:49
only one business in the galaxy that'll get you this rich war
3:53
selling weapons to the
3:55
first order and a monologue from DJ good
3:58
guys black guys made
4:01
of words his over a
4:04
live free don't join and
4:07
neither significantly affects the actions he takes throughout the majority of the story so
4:12
in DJ betrays them they
4:14
blow you up today you know
4:15
them up tomorrow it's
4:18
just business and fin
4:19
de Clare is that he's made up his mind on
4:21
good guys and bad guys you're
4:23
wrong it's not that powerful he
4:25
just spent the whole movie helping the resistance and
4:28
now he's choosing to
4:29
continue helping the resistance
4:31
the events of the plot have not compelled him in a believable way to
4:35
go from running away to save ray to
4:38
being willing to die for the resistance
4:40
all of this is unfortunate
4:42
because I like Finn and I think he could be a really interesting character
4:46
and part of what is so confusing about
4:48
the last Jedi is that this flawed arc happens alongside another arc
4:52
that has none of these problems
4:53
and builds to one of the best moments
4:56
in the film the
4:57
character who transforms the most in the last Jedi
5:00
is kylo Ren unlike
5:04
with Finn's arc we get to see kylo make decisions
5:06
that externalize his inner struggle
5:08
the starting point of kylo ren's arc is established very
5:12
clearly in his first scene
5:16
we witness Snoke emotionally
5:19
manipulate him feeding off kylos desire to become a new Darth Vader and the
5:23
emotional turmoil of having killed his father you
5:26
have too much of your father's
5:28
heart in you young
5:30
soul I killed muscles
5:32
and look at you the
5:34
spread of spirit to the bone kylo
5:37
is wrestling with the conflict
5:39
inside him lost somewhere between the light and the dark
5:43
and this is demonstrated because
5:47
the plot constantly puts him in situations
5:49
where he must choose between these two paths follow
5:52
my lead for example when he has a chance to kill Leia his mother
5:56
and leader of the resistance
5:57
but can't bring himself to do so we
6:00
also get to witness his emotional journey through the force connection
6:03
between him and mechanically
6:06
this is an excellent way to force the protagonist and
6:09
antagonist to interact in a way that can't simply resort to violence
6:13
at first kylo tries to show rey that he is the dark SIF that
6:17
he's trying to be
6:19
monster yes I know but then
6:23
he tries to make her understand
6:24
him sharing the story of Luke's betrayal
6:27
and finally their emotional bond growing stronger he's
6:32
faced with yet another choice
6:33
it isn't too late Rey
6:36
calls him to the light and he chooses to reach out and touch her
6:40
time after time kylo
6:42
Ren is given the opportunity
6:43
to embrace the darkness but
6:45
always hesitates all of this builds to my favorite moment of the film
6:51
after they touch hands Rey glimpses the conflict
6:54
within him just now when
6:55
we touch hands I saw
6:58
his future if I go to him Ben
7:01
solo will turn so
7:03
she goes to kylo
7:04
and he brings her before Snoke this
7:06
begins an exciting cascade of character
7:08
failures that is the result of clever story construction
7:11
first we learned that Rey wasn't the only one who saw the future casting
7:16
doubt on what will happen I saw
7:17
something too because of what I saw I know when the moment comes he
7:21
would be the one to turn then
7:23
Snoke reveals he was the one that connected them hoping
7:26
Rey would bring herself to him Rey
7:28
has fallen into a trap
7:33
surae becomes desperate but
7:36
she's clearly no match for snow and here
7:39
at the depths of our characters failure and the apex tension
7:42
kylo Ren must choose his path once
7:44
and for all complete
7:46
your training destiny and with
7:52
the flick of his fingers
7:54
we gain a deeper understanding of
7:56
his true nature and
7:58
two characters who began the story as enemies become
8:01
allies Kyle Ozark demonstrates
8:04
the emotional power choices
8:06
can have when the plot continually
8:08
pushes characters to confront their emotional struggle and having
8:11
witnessed his potential for good it is that much more heartbreaking when
8:15
he finally chooses to become the
8:17
villain of the story
8:22
the arcs of kylo Ren and Finn expressed
8:25
my conflicted feelings about
8:27
the last jetta let's
8:28
troll chrome-dome some of the things it does are amazing
8:32
frustratingly disappointing on one
8:35
hand I love how brave the film is as Mark
8:37
Hamill said last gen I was incredibly
8:40
daring if as I would say like you
8:42
know but we really have to think of what the audience
8:45
expects and what they want and
8:47
he says no no we
8:48
have to do the opposite we have to give
8:50
them something they don't expect that we want this
8:53
is a great approach for creating a genuinely
8:56
new experience for an audience it's
8:58
why the finale of the last Jedi was surprising
9:01
while the finale of the force awakens was familiar the
9:04
heroes faced the antagonist
9:05
with no meaningful consequence
9:07
as the good guys and bad guys had their usual race to see who
9:10
could blow up the other first Death
9:12
Star trench run and all the
9:14
finale of the last Jedi took risks and wasn't afraid to dish out repercussions
9:18
an entire films worth of plot leads to a dead end as Finn and
9:22
Poe as plan fails almost
9:24
bringing about the end of the resistance
9:26
this was frustrating but was also what made the third act surprising
9:30
the force awakens ended
9:32
as a tease leaving
9:33
every question unanswered and
9:35
building excitement more with the promise of substance
9:37
rather than substance itself
9:39
the last Jedi directly
9:41
answered all the questions
9:43
thought were worth answering and dismissed the rest all
9:46
while giving each character a complete
9:48
if not always compelling journey
9:51
honestly I'm left with as many questions as when I started this video let
9:55
the past die kill
9:57
it if you have to I see
10:00
only way to become what you were meant to be is
10:02
this what we need to do to
10:05
let go of the franchise's
10:06
history not let the new films be defined and restrained by what has come
10:10
before will we remember the last Jedi as the movie that freed Star Wars
10:14
to become something unique among tentpole
10:16
blockbusters or as an attempt at ripping off the band-aid that
10:20
was both painful and failed
10:22
to finish the job and can
10:24
episode nine redeem the franchise in the eyes that have forsaken it while
10:28
also living up to the standards set by the last Jedi's willingness to let
10:31
the past die for
10:33
now it seems we'll
10:35
just have to wait and see
10:36
build a rebellion from this
10:40
we have everything we need
10:49
have you ever wanted to learn a skill but found that the only person
10:52
that could teach you was being kind of grumpy about it or
10:55
have you ever thought it'd be cool to learn a new ability
10:58

about how his past failures
