Some of us will require the better part of a lifetime to learn a
0:07
very simple sounding lesson
0:09
that should have struck us
0:10
as obvious and urgent from the start:
0:13
that the only love worthy of the name,
0:15
the only love we should ever be interested in, is reciprocal love.
0:20
In other words, a love where another person is entirely
0:23
as convinced of us
0:25
as we are of them;
0:27
where another person is every bit as present in the relationship as we are;
0:31
a love where we never need to persuade or beg;
0:35
a love where we aren’t left anxious and agitated by evasions and ambiguities;
0:40
a love where we don’t have to wonder where they are
0:42
and when they will get back to us;
0:44
where we aren’t repeatedly up in the early hours writing them messages explaining what
0:49
we hope for from them;
0:50
where they never cease to be entirely there for us,
0:54
as we are there for them,
0:56
and they are profoundly grateful
0:58
that we are in their lives -
1:00
as we are grateful
1:01
that they are in ours.
1:04
This isn’t arrogance or entitlement, this isn’t ‘too much.’
1:08
This isn’t ‘neediness.’
1:10
It’s a basic law of emotional reciprocity
1:14
that will strike us
1:14
as peculiar or offputting for only one reason:
1:18
because we haven’t yet learned what we are owed,
1:21
because we have come from a very deprived place,
1:24
because we were somewhere early on trained to despise ourselves.
1:29
What nonsense we may accept in lieu of this essential and rightful fare.
1:35
How many years or decades of life we may have wasted mistaking pain for
1:41
love.
1:42
Times when we will have insisted on imagining that they did love us back,
1:46
they were just too shy to say so.
1:48
Times when we sat patiently
1:49
and politely with them
1:51
while they tried to decide whether they should be with us
1:54
or with a rival
1:55
and we felt their dilemma
1:56
so acutely.
1:58
Times when we paid for everything
1:59
and they returned the favour with half-heartedness
2:02
and forgotten birthday presents.
2:04
We might have had a marriage behind us in which almost every evening,
2:08
we had to fight our case,
2:10
we had to struggle to have basic things about our needs heard:
2:13
that we needed their touch, that we wanted them to be more present,
2:16
that they couldn’t stonewall us.
2:19
We might have got involved in all manner of so-called ‘complicated’ relationships,
2:24
where the person seemed a little loving at first
2:26
and then very much not
2:28
so in the long run.
2:30
But there is never any such thing as a legitimately complicated relationship.
2:37
They either honour us or they don’t.
2:39
They are either on the other end of the rope,
2:41
as firmly as we are,
2:42
or they don’t belong in our lives in any way.
2:46
Lett us keep in mind - always - some fundamental rules that might,
2:50
because so much went wrong in childhood,
2:53
be the fruit of decades of inner work:
2:56
- if they are still deciding
2:57
but haven’t yet (there are two other people they quite like
2:58
as well),
2:58
we must leave them. - if they are taking ages to reply to simple messages,
3:02
we must leave them. - if they are flirting elsewhere,
3:05
we must leave them. -
3:06
if we need to explain to them why they should want to be with
3:09
us,
3:10
we must leave them. -
3:11
if they are wrestling with psychological issues for
3:14
which we have boundless sympathy
3:16
but which mean they cannot be kind
3:18
or present,
3:19
we must leave them. - if they are not infinitely proud of us,
3:22
we must leave them. -
3:24
if we have given them several good chances
3:26
and they didn’t listen,
3:27
we must leave them.
3:29
And leave them means exactly that.
3:31
Ensure they are no longer in our lives,
3:33
that they don’t occupy the slightest space in our cupboards or our thoughts,
3:38
that there are no more reminders of them anywhere in our consciousness,
3:42
that we have expelled them like the emotional poisons they are.
3:46
It is a complicating factor -
3:47
but no more than
3:48
that - that we may be married to them,
3:51
that we have already invested five years with them,
3:53
that sex is great with them, that we find them beautiful or clever.
3:57
None of this means anything; none of this is love.
4:01
All this might escape our notice for a tragic reason:
4:05
because for some of us, our childhoods will have deeply muddled our emotional mechanisms.
4:10
They will have given us a sense that to love is to pine;
4:14
that to love is to hope to persuade a damaged person (who might initially
4:18
present as sweet and dependable)
4:20
that we are good enough,
4:22
that we are never in the right relationship until we feel ignored,
4:25
uncomfortable and harshly evaluated;
4:28
that the only person we really need love from is someone who isn’t wholly
4:33
persuaded by us.
4:35
We can’t afford such self-torture and self-abandonment any longer.
4:40
We need to come down firmly on our own side at last.
4:44
The self-hatred has gone on long enough.
4:47
Most people won’t think we’re fabulous; that’s entirely their right.
4:51
We simply need to make sure
4:52
that we don’t ever mistake such types for characters we might love.
4:57
We need to grow sane enough to allow ourselves to locate,
5:00
hold on to and tolerate a true ally.
5:05
It isn’t in any way entitled; it’s not brittle.
5:09
We deserve to be adored where we adore.
5:11
Anything less isn’t romantic; it’s self-abandonment.
5:15
It deserves to be seen for what it is:
5:17
a legacy of a letdown
5:19
that we didn’t deserve
5:20
then and don’t deserve now.
5:23
We will have understood love
5:24
when we know that the emotion is in no way about singular self-sacrifice;
5:27
it’s about two people who feel constantly blessed to have met who care infinitely
5:34
for one another.
5:35
When this finally seems obvious, we’ll be home.
