0:02
Many of us dimly sense that despite ourselves, unfortunately and mysteriously,
0:07
we keep ending up in some very similar dark places.
0:11
Perhaps another relationship with someone who doesn't seem to love us properly
0:15
or another breakdown of trust at work
0:18
or another panic about reputation
0:20
or sex or else the repeated patterns involve a return to a background mood.
0:25
Yet again, we feel highly anxious.
0:28
Yet again, we feel convinced
0:29
that everyone hates us
0:30
or that something terrible is about to happen.
0:33
Psychotherapists have given all this a name in
0:36
so far as we keep steering ourselves back to some familiar negative circumstances
0:41
or emotions.
0:43
We may be in the grip of what is known as a repetition compulsion.
0:48
We aren't here again by coincidence.
0:51
We are in an unconscious part of our minds steering ourselves to a place
0:55
of pain with hidden intent.
0:58
This is a hugely perplexing notion to have to take on board.
1:02
It's bad enough to keep winding up in particular trouble.
1:05
It's even worse to have to think
1:06
that we're being driven towards it by some kind of inelectable internal force.
1:12
We naturally want to repeat pleasure, but why seek to repeat frustration, sabotage,
1:18
and alarm?
1:19
Psychotherapists have a suggestion.
1:21
We can never let go of any negative experience, they tell us,
1:25
until it has been fully understood.
1:28
An issue will remain active for us, even if it's decades old,
1:32
so long as it's not been acknowledged
1:34
and its emotional resonance identified
1:37
and allowed to dissipate.
1:39
The experiences that we are driven to repeat are,
1:42
these therapists go on to say,
1:44
precisely those that we've not been able to square up to.
1:48
We repeat what we've sidestepped and left unagnowledged.
1:52
A part of our minds is committed to forcing us back to a zone
1:56
of original difficulty,
1:58
not in order that we suffer aimlessly,
2:00
but so that we may eventually find freedom through understanding.
2:05
Therefore, in this account, we aren't seeking simply to be unhappy.
2:10
An emotional conscience is pushing us towards the location of our buried truths in
2:15
the name of eventual release.
2:17
Our sad and anxious rehearsals are like ghosts
2:21
that keep manifesting themselves until a foundational injustice is uncovered
2:27
and worked through.
2:28
Psychotherapy points out that the patterns we are most likely to be repeating are
2:33
ones that date back to childhood
2:35
because this is the period
2:36
when we are both least able to understand what's going on in ourselves
2:40
and most at the mercy of adults around us.
2:44
We may in our search for release from our repetitions need to be very
2:48
brave in remembering what might have gone on many years before.
2:53
Matters were perhaps not as simple as we might have assumed.
2:56
If we keep nowadays finding ourselves in a panic
2:59
that someone will try to humiliate us
3:02
or if we seek love from distracted
3:04
and incapable people or spoil our professional chances.
3:07
We may need to wonder how might our negative patterns be following in the
3:13
tracks of earlier pains.
3:16
What our impulse to repeat is in essence inviting us to do is to
3:20
pause and mourn.
3:22
Just as we have to do when someone we love dies,
3:24
we need to stop evading our suffering
3:26
and give ourselves time to absorb it from a range of angles at multiple
3:30
points of day and night
3:32
and in relation to different moods.
3:34
We may have to mourn
3:35
that our father's sexuality was far too complicated
3:39
or that our mother couldn't deal with our vulnerability
3:41
or that a sibling was favored
3:43
or that we've made a mess of our adult love lives
3:46
because we've grown up without an ability to trust
3:49
or assert ourselves.
3:51
The reward for doing this painful work is
3:54
that eventually our minds can be expected to relent.
3:57
Once we've kept an appointment with our primal griefs,
4:01
we can gradually hope to drift away from them.
4:03
and the patterns to
4:04
which they've given rise.
4:06
The part of us
4:07
that isn't able to rest until the truth has been exumed will let us
4:11
plow new,
4:12
less frightened tracks once it's sufficiently convinced that we have finally mourned and understood.
